The most interesting first thing that I am going to look for in pre and early season is if and how Selles uses Cannon.

I have just watched the Jimmy Babble and his Three Mouldy Blades stream, and they talked for a long time about how poor we were last year in the last 15 minutes -18th best performing. Their discussion was all around lack of fitness - but every team that presses high has players that run out of steam around 70 minutes - that is what impact subs are for.

What happened was that our blinkered manager then kept bringing on Tom Cannon, who couldn’t press a shirt. The result was that the opposition were 20 yards further up the pitch before there was any pressure on the ball, and so we frequently sat back and conceded.

There is a player in Cannon - but not a high intensity, high pressing player. Like Bamford, he struts around with a stiff back - the chap who sits near me says he runs like a constipated ostrich!! He looked most comfortable starting in a 2, but whether he can fit in a high intensity Selles team will depend crucially on what happens behind him. If we are driving vertically from midfield then Cannon breaking into space off the shoulder might be exactly what we need.

I think Cannon will fly or sink without trace very quickly next season, but I think Selles is just the man to recognise and make best use of his strengths.

Think Selles want a mobile, powerful striker.m to stretch play. I don’t think Cannon is that guy. TC is comfortably our best striker, let’s hope they can somehow get him fit for 90 mins.

"Couldn't press a shirt"... Made me chuckle 😊

He either becomes the next Brewster, or scores 15+ goals and gets us promotion. No in between!

Selles’ favourite formation is 4-2-2-2, so rather than long balls to a striker it is driving and rapid vertical passing through the lines. Campbell and Cannon running into space with, hopefully, Gus & Callum feeding it through to them is how I could see it working.

But where do the wingers (which he's said he wants) fit in that scenario? (not having a go, BTW)

Read The Selles Formation thread - describes the various set-ups that he uses.

I have read it, but it doesn't answer the question: if the front four are Campbell, Cannon, Hamer and O'Hare, where do the wingers fit in?
He's said he wants to play with wingers, which presumably implies 4-3-3?

He’s played 4222 and 433/4231 throughout his managerial career.
Hes probably actually played more games in the latter formations which is where the wingers will come in

In the 4222 the two up top for arguments sake would be Campbell and Cannon, then the next two are the wingers out wide, the last two are the box to box central midfielders, Hamer and O'Hare for arguments sake.

In possession it's more like a 442, off the ball the two central midfielders drop back while the wingers stay further up the pitch, which I can only assume means the fullbacks are expected to push further up to bridge the gap between themselves and the wingers.

I'll be interested to see how this impacts on Burrows and Seriki bombing forward.

What formation for plan B when plan A get's found out?

Selles has already suggested that he will be fluid with formations and team selections to ensure that we have the best chance against every opponent instead of the same plan A against everyone home and away.

He has often switched between 4222, 433 and 4231 in games as the positions interchange nicely.

To go to 4231 from 4222 you simply drop a forward back into attacking midfield.

To go to 433, one of the forwards plays out wide and one of the wide midfielders drops into central midfield.

Or, if we are playing with Moore up top with a partner, to change to 433 the wingers stay out wide and Moore drops back as a link up man like Didsy used to do.

I personally hope we sign a new striker and Moores no where near it
Moore is good with the right partner. He links up better than McBurnie ever did. However, I can't see him being limited to away games as he's not as dynamic as Selles seems to favour.

His pressing style is supposed to create chances with loose balls around the area, hopefully cannon can get on the end of them. He’s got a good shot on him.

A forward dropping in to the 10 would be more of a 4231 but …

I think on the balance of last season he was a huge disappointment. Missed a lot of football, missed several big chances, rarely looked threatening. He could be running clear through on goal and he’ll dilly dally before shooting allowing an easy block / save. I would never bet on him scoring - ever. I can’t see him doing a good job as a number 10 at all. He’s too clunky and his passing is no where near good enough.

We low balled McBurnie on a new contract offer, which meant he walked for free. Spent a couple of million on Moore who won’t be on peanuts being signed from a PL club having just won promotion with Ipswich. Moore being 4 years older than McBurnie with absolutely no resale value.

I think McBurnie was a far better all round footballer than Moore. He linked up with Berge and Ndiaye far far better than anything we’ve seen from Moore. Mcburnie isn’t a target man he’s a decent link up player who just happens to be tall.

Just my opinion of course and I’m not suggesting re-signing Mcburnie. I’d rather see someone like Kone play upfront with Campbell. He’s 6’ but he’s also an athletic mobile forward. He could press and get in behind while still has the stature and physicality to be OK in the air and hold the ball up well. If it was him and Campbell they’d also have the versatility to drop into other positions in the Selles book.

As daft as it might sound from signing a forward, you are with McBurnie also signing another centre half at set pieces, he is so strong in the air and being naturally tall can cover zones too, when we had him he was often rated for as good at the back as going forwards.

i think the campbell/cannon pairing up top could be very interesting in selles formations cant see moore being anything but a plan b from the bench for last 20 if were struggling if and its a big if we can keep hamer i also think him and o'hare could benefit from being closer together centrally and also expect seriki and burrows to be very high up the pitch especially in home games

If McBurnie is only good at defending set pieces then play him at centre back!!! The only arguments I ever hear in favour of McBurnie is that he can defend set pieces (not so good at attacking them though), and that he was our top scorer in the Premier League with 6 goals, as if that makes the rest of the teams quake with fear.

Fast wingers putting it on a plate for Cannon/Campbell next season. I have a dream. A wet dream

Thanks — a useful explanation.
I was confused with the previous poster who seemed to be suggesting Hamer and O'Hare behind the two strikers.

What's vertical passing? Is that not an old fashioned up and under? It's an absolutely ridiculous phrase that actually means nothing and certainly doesn't make sense if u break down the 2 meanings of the words, but I suppose it's the new buzz word in football so to sound intelligent fans are now using it
