In our previous three promotions, we didn’t have a player performing the Souza role.
It’s not needed at this level for us in my opinion. Appreciate others will disagree.
My rationale is this; we will dominate the ball against most teams. Having someone whose main purpose is purely to defend deep is a waste of a shirt and I’d rather have another player who can push us on.
In prior promotions we’ve had Norwood and Norwood/Doyle and before his injury we had Coutts. All of which were progressive passers who were happy to come deep rather than defensive foils.
I’m personally ok with three from Arblaster, Peck, Hamer and O’Hare and I’m happy Selles is already finding a system that pairs Hamer and O’Hare in a more Central Area. When Arblaster is fit it may be one of them drifts into a wider role of the front three but for now I’d go with Peck and those two when we kick off.
If we get promoted? Completely agree. It’s the one obvious change. But when we expect to be attacking we should embrace that. It also feels like if we were more like that last season we might have been more decisive in games.
Well, if he does I doubt we'll see him p*ssed up table dancingDoes he like a Peroni though?
And enjoy it by being disciplined!Absolutely Tony,
Selles is the future, Wilder is the past.
Ruben will do what wilder could not do, play fast exciting football (as per my previous post) fans will be off their seat.
Fans will leave Bramall Lane on a high, not feeling mundane.
Happy, exciting times ahead.
Buy into it, embrace it, and most importantly, ENJOY IT !
I don’t think we need a Souza type to sit deep. I think we need one to rescue us when we pile forward and the opposition break. It’s his speed, calmness on the ball and strength I think we’ll need in this system. Not necessarily a pure defensive midfielder to sit in front of the defence. In our previous three promotions, we didn’t have a player performing the Souza role.

Selles hinted that he likes box to box midfielders, which to me suggests that he doesn't want an out and out defensive midfielder as he expects the midfield to do both roles. Hamer, O'Hare, Davies, Arblaster and Peck are all more than capable of that, though Peck needs more work in the final third with creating chances and finishing. I could very well be wrong and perhaps he does want one, but that's how I interpreted his initial interview.I don’t think we need a Souza type to sit deep. I think on your last point is why we need a defensive midfielder coming in. If Peck leaves then this will probably be the time we go out and spend a transfer fee on such a player or a decent loan. The play seemed so very different to last season.
Lots of chances created
Lots of ball carries forward
Lots of progressive passes
But times where we were left quite exposed.
Definitely a promising start though
Not aimed just at you, but why are so many people obsessed/insistent it has to be a left footer at left centre back?? It doesn't. In fact many right footer centre backs prefer playing on the left.
When did this left foot, right foot thing become a thing? I don't remember it ever being an issue when Warnock was in charge. I don't think Warnock cared what foot Chris Morgan favoured.Clearly at a very different level but I was a right footed centre half and always preferred being on the left. Relatively unique though as I'm right footed and left handed so being on the right didn't feel natural. It's a misconception that you naturally want to run in the direction of your strongest foot for everyone.
Think John Terry preferred playing on the left. I seem to remember his reasoning being his body position when defending crosses.Clearly at a very different level but I was a right footed centre half and always preferred being on the left. Hull didn’t concede many goals last season under him to be fair but he played a 4231 system, at the end of the season.Selles hinted that he likes box to box midfielders, which to me suggests that he doesn't want an out and out defensive midfielder as he expects the midfield to do both roles. it's going to be interesting as the formation today might be totally different to York and he might try something else.
Thank god I’m not the only one who doesn’t like this.Willing to give this lad a go, but he really needs to stop tucking his ears into his baseball cap
I’d class both Peck and Arblaster as all-rounders.If we don’t have a defensive centre midfielder who can be athletic, physical dominate to break up play and recover the ball we will be in major bother. It isn’t FIFA where we put all our favourite attacking players in the first XI, if we’re in a high press with no DMC who can cover space we will be obliterated by any team on the break. Souza saved our skin in an organised and restrained system last season plenty of times, with such an aggressive press the DMC workload will be exponentially more.
It came with Wilder. He seemed to have a bit of OCD about it.When did this left foot, right foot thing become a thing? I don't remember it ever being an issue when Warnock was in charge. I don't think Warnock cared what foot Chris Morgan favoured.
I think Peck will flourish with more freedom to get forwardI’d class both Peck and Arblaster as all-rounders.
I think they can do the dirty work without removing entirely a players that contributes to the attack.
Again, it might just be Ruben and me that think this![]()
Did the Rotherham fans know there was a game on?This was kick off for the first half. You can see the formation clearly. Hamer tucking in in front of Peck and Burrows stepping up to cover the gap.

8. Players often kept the ball and ran with it if they found themselves receiving the ball in clear space. Some observations:
1. Much more possession based. I saw very little aimless hoof, even with the temptation of Moore up top.
2. We were clearly working on giving the keeper 2+ passing options, and looking to break the press either with quick passing combos or even dribbling out,
3. We were much better at both passing and receiving the ball under pressure. We didn’t panic and almost accepted that this style will mean playing within tight situations (oo er).
4. We were wider in attack and attacked in numbers.
5. When central we attempted more penetrative slide rule passes between the lines rather than over the top.
6. We played with a very high defensive line which I think supports the idea of trying to win back the ball higher
7. Intensity/pace notably higher,
Observation spot on, also, the fitness levels that were a major concern last season have improved significantly, as required with Ruben's tactics. Early days, but I am feeling excited and optimistic for The Blades this season. Some observations:

yes for me wilder played both hamer and o' hare in the wrong positions last season hamer was wasted on the left and o'hare isnt a player to be played off the main striker both looked uncomfortable in the roles to me as the 2 in a 4123 formation i think they will flourish just a question of whether we can hang on to gusEarly days but nice to see Hamer and O'Hare playing deeper with three players in front of them to pass to.
Many posters on here last season wanted Wilder to play Hamer deeper.
Movement looks better with and without the ball hunting the ball down in packs.
I am also feeling excited and optinistic but I don't think we will be able to comment on fitness until we see a team announced to see out 90 minutes rather than letting them all go all out for 45 minutes.Observation spot on, also, the fitness levels that were a major concern last season have improved significantly, as required with Ruben's tactics. I'm now even more confused to what formation that is.This was kick off for the first half. You can see the formation clearly. Hamer tucking in in front of Peck and Burrows stepping up to cover the gap.

Really tricky to pick the starting 11 for the Brizzle game. Our squad is coming together nicely if the reports are true on Soumaré and Barry.
---------------- Cooper
Seriki --- Anel ---- Bindon ---- Burrows
Peck --- Soumaré
------- Hamer
Brookes ----- Campbell ----- One
Think this is the strongest 11 that we could put out at this point. Strength at the back and in behind Hamer. Pace and trickery from the front 3 for Hamer to slip some in. As long as we transition in a tight unit, I can't see many getting much change out of Peck and Soumaré if they go past Hamer.
I'd be happy with this 11, but we could have even better players lined up before the window slams shut.
