Selles & Cannon

If McBurnie is only good at defending set pieces then play him at centre back!!! The only arguments I ever hear in favour of McBurnie is that he can defend set pieces (not so good at attacking them though), and that he was our top scorer in the Premier League with 6 goals, as if that makes the rest of the teams quake with fear.
McB’s link play was good. Not Harry Kane good but he has the ability to hold up the ball and lay it off to bring others into the attack. He has the same problem that Kane has - you can’t be playing the hold up link play AND be the main forward…in the same attack.

Far too interested in having a scrap with the CB rather than concentrating on holding the ball up. And the constant mouthing at officials became very tedious. Very undisciplined. He would need to cut both of those traits out before setting foot anywhere near here again.

Absoloute waffle

Cannon is probbaly the most suited to Selles ball high pressing intensity

In the 4222 the two up top for arguments sake would be Campbell and Cannon, then the next two are the wingers out wide, the last two are the box to box central midfielders, Hamer and O'Hare for arguments sake.

In possession it's more like a 442, off the ball the two central midfielders drop back while the wingers stay further up the pitch, which I can only assume means the fullbacks are expected to push further up to bridge the gap between themselves and the wingers.

I'll be interested to see how this impacts on Burrows and Seriki bombing forward.
Whilst Burrows had a very good season I do think we hampered ourselves considerably in the way we used him. He needs to be as far forward as possible as often as possible. Assist king and a credible amount of goals, if used correctly. I think Hamer being the wanderer in front of meant he didn’t get over the half way line as often as he could have done.

Thanks — a useful explanation.
I was confused with the previous poster who seemed to be suggesting Hamer and O'Hare behind the two strikers.
They would be in attack, then drop back when we lose the ball. A bit like what Brown and McCall used to do.

Based on what he's shown for us so far Cannon reminds me a bit of both Brewster and Ched Evans. They can all strike the ball pretty well, but seem to get few chances and their pace let them down. You could even include Billy Sharp (1st spell) in this comparison.

Evans got his break by us dropping down a level, and maybe that's what could have reignited the careers of Brewster and Cannon as well. Of course, Evans blew it all after a night out in Wales. Sharp really made the most of his career. Over a long career, he wasn't too proud to drop down a level, which he did a few times and came back stronger.

But Brewster has hung around with us for too long, to the extent we put him in different positions in the desperate hope he'd contribute in some other way, even if not scoring goals. As he matured he managed to improve from 'dreadful every time' to 'ok on the odd occasion'. Us offering him new terms suggests we're still not prepared to accept our expensive mistake.

Cannon should be able to score many goals at some level. Hard to say if he'll ever do it for us, or at Championship level in general. So far defenders catch up with him and comfortably get blocks in, in a similar manner to what Championship defenders did to Evans and Brewster. If the goals don't start coming pretty soon we should probably reconsider our faith in him.

Narcis Pelach tried to use him as a pressing forward at Stoke. He kept subbing him off at half time because he wasn't doing enough. I think we need to accept that Cannon is a poacher and not much else.

Mogadon Man tried to use Billy Sharp as a winger. Quelle fucking surprise that it didn't work for the best poacher we'd had since Edwards.

I agree completely with you that Cannon is a poacher. We set up to play to him, or get rid, but there is no other option.

Selles has already suggested that he will be fluid with formations and team selections to ensure that we have the best chance against every opponent instead of the same plan A against everyone home and away.
Do you have any idea of how he likes to play from the back.
It used to frustrate the hell out of me watching us knocking it across the back line to then eventually play the long ball forward.
I can accept the keeping possession bit if we then find a pass to one of our players, but last season we would often play 20 odd passes across our back line to then end up playing hoofball.
Quite often this would be the period when we lost control of the game.
Being fluid with formations only works if you have the players that can adapt.

He likes ball-playing center backs. He's mentioned "fast, vertical attacks" a few times... Think he's referring more to quick breaks and Norwood-style passes behind the defense, rather than lumping it to a big target man.

Out of our strikers he is the fittest and most mobile

You can teach pressing

He looked gormless most of the time. Whether that’s the role he was given or his inability to read what was happening around him time will tell. Too new to be totally written off yet.

He is the most half hearted preseer of the ball I've ever seen

Really?

Che Adams was beyond abysmal at anything other than in front of goal.

Currently, I'd say JRS is by far the worst presser in the club and a defensive liability. People wonder why Wilder didn't start him more, but he makes Brooks look like Bobby Moore.

He's Spanish, do you think he means 'diagonal, attacks ? 🤔

Pretty much yeah!

"Then as soon as you win the ball back, don’t try and keep it. He talks about going vertical, playing that forward pass, wherever. Diagonal runs, forward passes, it’s just a big chaos in the middle of the pitch.”

It all sounds very exciting. Might as well make the kop all standing because the excitement and atmosphere is coming back to Bramall Lane big time !

I think this style will suit Campbell and cannon alot more. Think we should see more from cannon. I know he didn't do much last season for us. But when you watch his game and don't follow ball he makes some great runs. Which last season we rarely or never played to it to him. I'm not saying he's going to the best striker in the championship. However we need to play to his strengths to get best of him

we need hamer right in behind campbell and cannon if he stays with us him and o'hare more central could give us some exciting attacking options

Danny Hall seems to think he's going to be taking over Hamer's role out of position on the left wing. Feels like a bit of a stretch to me tbh if this a couple of training exercises and a temporary squad number are all he's going on

Great post, especially the comparison to Evans, who, let's face it, had one decent season as a flat track bully in the 3rd tier. Sharp adjusted his game to maximise his threat successfully, and the drop-down a level really helped, because he was a clever footballer. Evans was not a clever one (or individual). The common denominator was their lack of pace. So how does Cannon compensate for lack of pace? Has he the foot balling brain of Billy or Ched? That said, the manager and coaching staff must play their part, too. It's a tough task, but that's one of their jobs.

Unfortunately, Wilder and his staff, were unable to improve Brewster as a striker, accepted defeat and played him elsewhere.

Christ if we're playing him on the wing we're more fucked than I thought.
I maybe wrong but i seem to recall him playing out-wide for some period with preston and not being too bad. Intruiged to see his skillset under selles.
