jjeeezz on the lads back coz we are not winning arrr stop blaming tom cannon for our results i back him the score for fun in the last 5 games why is he a scapegoat for poor defending.arrrrr blame defence its very poor give holding a full match has no5 or buy a no5 quick,,weve been crap since harry soutter sadly got injured arrr, get a grip, everyones fault not just tommy ,aarrrrrrrrrrr

It’s not his fault that we paid so much for him.

Let’s forget the price tag.

He just doesn’t look very good at all but then again what strikers do at the Lane? Campbell is an exception not the rule we just don’t play very good football in the attacking third

You're looking for a scapegoat, that's obvious.

Again, it was largely fuck all to do with Cannon that we failed to score in any of the matches he's played in.

We've got Moore on the bench twiddling his thumbs most games. We've got Brooks who has basically been excluded from action and still got 2 goals 2 assists. Then we've got Cannon on who has been ANONYMOUS throughout his time here getting the game time instead. I'd utter madness, like we don't actually want to go up.

Cannon has scored more goals this season than Moore and Brooks combined.

🤷🏻‍♂️

Factually true but none of those goals have been for us. Clearly we play a very different system to Stoke and if you have eyes (presume you do) you will have surely accepted he doesn't fit our system at all. Do you not give any credit to form? or how the player has actually looked in a united shirt? Bottom line is both Moore and Brooks have looked better in a united shirt than he has and are more deserving of game time.

I haven't seen anywhere near enough of Cannon yet to make any sort of solid judgement on him.

That's why I think starting a thread to slag him off after 11 games (most as a substitute) is pathetic.

How much do you need to see? Genuine question.

Half a dozen consecutive starts would be ideal but that's not going to happen this season.

If we go up it's highly likely Cannon will be loaned back to a Championship team next season.

The reason he isn't getting the starts is because he's not a patch on Campbell, who we got for free.
Doesn't the fact he cost £10 Million, in the Championship, affect your expectations at all? Have you considered opportunity cost? (what we could have done with the money instead).. that irritates me every time I see his name on the squad sheet.

Its an interesting conundrum about what happens if we don't go up. Loan him to another championship team is the only option really I think? I can't imagine he'd accept a loan to a League One team.

The £10m price tag is largely a reflection of his age and potential.

He's a long term investment type of signing, not an instant reward signing.

Whether or not that was a good use of money for a club pushing for automatic promotion from the Championship in January is another debate altogether.

Cannon doesnt get many chances created for him, though. He's a bit of a poacher and since when do we ever get good balls in the box. I am not saying he is a great signing, and I certainly dont think he is 'quick' as Wilder does (Cannon isnt quick) but Sharp would look sh1t in this team right now given the lack of service.

Agree with last two posts. The good things I've seen from Cannon at other clubs have been playing off another striker.

I'd be genuinely interested in the reasons why we wanted him and were willing to pay so much by our standards at this level. So far I've not seen us play him once in a role where he did ok elsewhere.

Consequently, he's not shown enough to start regularly and looks lost when he gets on. However, due to his fee, he's going to be brought on more often than he would if he'd cost little.
We seemed to get sucked into a bidding war with a few other clubs.
Once the bidding went over 5 million, we should have walked away. Instead we made it a statement signing.
Leicester played a blinder, as did Liverpool with Brewster

Cannon just needs to get used to the system and gel with the team. A pre season behind him he'll be our top scorer next season.

The RoysView warned us that Cannon is garbage as a lone striker but good with a partner. What does Wilder often do, play him up top alone. Surely if Stoke fans can see that then the scouts can see that, unless all they looked at was Cannon on paper and his goals to games stats.
Wilder don't listen t'fans, he knows best..end of. He also knows how to bring the best out of hidden gems. Shame Canon is hidden but not a gem.

Here's Sheff United's scorelines whilst Tom Cannon has been on the pitch (goals scored or conceded whilst he's off the pitch not included)

Cannon debut - Plays full game: Blades 0 Hull 3.
Cannon starts vs Derby: Derby 0 Blades 1 (Cannon gets an assist)
Cannon starts vs Portsmouth: Blades 2 Portsmouth 1
Cannon starts v Boro (subbed off at half time): Blades 1 Boro 1 (we win 3-1 after he goes off)
Cannon subbed on vs Leeds 59th minute - we're winning 1-0. Blades 0 Leeds 3
Cannon subbed on 73rd minute (we're winning 1-2) QPR 0 Blades 0
Cannon subbed on 64th minute (we're winning 1-0) Blades 0 Preston 0
Cannon subbed on 76th miniute (we're winning 0-1) Pigs 0 Blades 0
Cannon subbed on 70th minute (we're winning 3-0) Blades 0 Coventry 1
Cannon subbed on 76th minute (we're losing 1-0) Oxford 0 Blades 0
Cannon subbed on 65th minute (we're losing 0-1) Blades 0 Millwall 0

aIn 11 appearances our form whilst Cannon is on the pitch is W2 D6 L3 our actual form in those games is W7 D0 L4
the 443 minutes Cannon has been on the pitch we've collectively scored 4 goals. That's around 1 goal per 111 minutes.
In that same time period we have collectively conceded 9 goals. Tom Cannon himself has contributed 0 goals and 1 assist.

Basically if you see Cannon coming on, you can just walk out of the ground at that moment and you'll probably be glad you did.
"If Cannon's on - we've given up" might be an appropriate chant.
Please Chris there's got to be better on the bench than him, stop giving him game time every chuffing match!
Fully agree with every word you say, and a brilliant post, BUT, once I read that wilder will have to seriously think about the Plymouth game team selection, I have got a horrible feeling that Cannon is going to play a major part in his thinking with some serious game time between now and the end of the season, and helping wilder deal with his consciousness of getting a naïve NEW board to shell out 10k for him

Cannon is a fox in the box type of player (Much like Billy). But Chris bought this type of player in the knowledge he was going to play with two inverted wingers, not renowned for traditional crosses. I don’t blame Cannon one bit as we simply don’t play to his strengths. At least Billy had the service from two wing backs as well as a couple of marauding centre backs.

Because Campbell is better. However the last two games have shown that there are several other weaknesses.

Agree that Cannon isn't the sum total of our problems. Many inconsistent players from Choudhury to Hamer to Diaz to Robinson to Rak-Sakyi. But earlier this season we had partnerships that were clearly working. Eg Hamer & O'Hare, Souza & Peck.

We've chosen to turn our back on those partnerships now and we're paying the price for doing so.

Honestly, what percentage of our ropey “form” is directly affected by Tom Cannon being “on the pitch”?

He has been alarmingly—if predictably—ineffectual, but there are 1,945 more significant reasons for why our wheels have fallen off than “United’s form with Cannon on the pitch”.

What a ridiculous bloody thread.

Its gone under the radar but I've also noticed that Cooper has been on the pitch every time we've lost this season.

I think he should be dropped for the rest of the season.

Cooper's form is W7 D0 L4 for those same Cannon games. 21pts vs Cannon's 12 pts. Try harder with your comedy point making.

What on earth are you talking about?

I think you're trolling, pretending to be mentally slower than you realy are. But in case you're not...

Cooper played the full 90 in each game Cannon was involved with. In those full 90s we've won 7 drawn 0 lost 4. = 21 points. Whereas in the minutes Cannon has played we've W2 D6 L3= 12 pts.
