Osborn gone

Or Wilder has looked at his wage bill for next season, what money is available now and what money he needs to bring in more players.

He may well have pencilled in x number of potential players who he wants to bring in, which will eat up his budget until certain players are moved on.

Perhaps a left back as a free agent is interested and Wilder wants him. Does he want to offer a new deal to Osborn, or use Ozzy's wages to bring in that left back.

I don't believe for one instant that this is a decision made because we're skint. I believe this is a footballing decision being made to help the rebuild, as we can use the wages to bring in a player who

A) won't be injury prone throughout his United career

B) can hold down a place in the first team other than out of desperation because everyone else is injured

C) the fans might look back on and say more than just, he was a utility player who ran around a lot

I don't mean any disrespect to Ozzy, but someone please convince me that he was a key player over the last five seasons who we will miss now that he is going. Why are we obsessed with bang average players who run around a lot but have little positive influence in matches? Why are we so accepting of mediocrity?

Osborn was an average player who tried hard and gave his all, but lacked the ability and consistency to hold down a regular place. That's an honest assessment of him. I can't knock him for his attitude or effort but it's time for us to sign better players than this.
Comfortably Championship ability, a good example on the pitch (and probably off it), able to cover several positions, the kind of player every successful team usually needs.
Surprised you can't believe it's possibly down to dosh when we're already starting next season on minus 2.
Hopefully it's not, but definitely plausible.

Let's say Osborn was on £12k per week and had a 40% relegation clause in his contract. That would leave us paying him £7.2k per week this season. If the club identified a better player than Osborn on these wages, would you rather sign that player, who might play every game, or re-sign Ozzy who will always be a bit part player?

Most of our players have relegation pay deduction clauses in their contracts. I'm only summising 40% as that's allegedly what Tommy Doyle wouldn't agree to.

Yes, money comes into it but we've already freed up a large chunk in releasing Norwood, Baldock, Basham, Foderingham, Lowe and now Osborn. Add to that Larouci, Brereton-Diaz, McAtee and Holgate and that's more wages off the bill.

If the remainder all have 40% pay cuts in their contracts then that's more money already saved. We know Archer is going and one other player allegedly has to be sold to balance the books, odd as we paid less for Hamer and Souza then we received for Ndiaye and Berge. But I don't think the money situation wages wise is as drastic as we think. There needs to be clever movement to ensure that we maximise what can be made available to Wilder for new players, and I'd rather see fresh blood than Osborn.

Add to that if we can sell Anel and Souza then the fee and wages from at least one of them should go to the squad rebuild.

Average weekly wage in Championship - £7k
Sammie Szmodics wage for 27 goals - £14k
Ben Osborn wage as as injury prone/cover / run a lot - £20k

I guess the offer was on vastly reduced wages, £5k would be about right - Ozzy will get more somewhere else

McB, Brewster and Ozzy take £100k a week from the budget, yet we cant build a team around them as they are so injury prone, and not that good tbh

GLTTL - but one well paid cheerleader on the books is enough

There is no way he will spend 10 m on a rebuild. He didn’t spend it on promotion as Archer wasn’t a signing.

I'm not expecting to sell Anel or Souza for £10mil each. Not a chance. I genuinely think that selling Hamer will be our only chance of bringing in three quality players for good fees. Lose one good player, gain three. That puts us up two players for the rebuild. I could live with that.

Sounds like an average Championship wage to me and it's doubtful there's a ready-made replacement on the same money.
Given the way we've shown the world we're not a serious football club over the last year I admire your confidence that good players are going to want to play for us on average Championship money.

Despite BBD's solid half-season, I reckon Osborn still holds the title of the best Ben to ever play for Sheffield United FC - ahead of Ben Davies (x2), Ben Doane, Ben Heneghan, Ben Starosta, Benie Traore, Ben Whiteman and Ben Woodburn.

From one Ben to another, cheers Ozzy and GLTYL
I mean, it's quite the list! 🤩

Christ, look at the state of that second one. You know something's wrong with the quality of the content, when the host thinks they need to be the focal point of the preview slide. Suffice to say, I won't be asking YouTube to notify me about that tripe.

Almost certainly an injury decision.

So that’s about 8 Professionals we have on the books now… I’ll get my boots out.. might get a game next season at this rate.
Have you got some goalie gloves as well?

Yes. Transfermarket has always been WAY off in every possible way. It's also in euros and I'm sure Andy meant after the sales of Ndiaye and Berge

Sure, but in leu of anyone, outside the club, actually knowing anything of actual fact, it's the best we have 🤷‍♂️

Prospective owners are influencing who the manager can and can't sign?
Could be in for an even longer and chaotic summer than usual.

Might be that with this takeover, the budget will be increased which will allow more players to be moved on, if that's the case then Osborn won't be the only one being moved on after looking like he might stay.

Yeah, that's the way I'm seeing it. The last minute call suggests things are about to move and because we'd already made a statement about keeping Boz we had to get ahead of it before releasing the Retained List. A Retained List that, IMO, will be heavily influenced by how deep the new owners pockets are.

The thought of an American consortium watching him last 5 minutes on Sunday and thinking he's shite bin him off is great
Hilarious isn't it. Considering the last two potential owners couldn't find Sheffield on a map, yet these guys are already giving their verdicts on squad players suitability...

They going to advise on the price of beer next?
