I don't have a bad word to say about him, but I also think it was the right decision to not re-sign him. Can't believe anyone would have a bad word to say about Egan. He was a fantastic servant to the club and a bloody good centre back. I think we'll struggle to ever better that CB partnership of Eg's, O'Connell and Bash tbh. He made mistakes in the 2nd Premier League season but, as a team, we were atrocious all over the park that year and Egan never downed tools (I'm looking at you Anel). He'll get a big clap from me on his return and definitely goes down as one of my favourite ever Blades centre backs.
In fact I agree with everything you've said here - I just feel that two promotion wage increases (which are bigger than the reductions for being relegated), the recent injury plus his age and the fact he was wobbly for at least 18 months before the injury mean he's not worth it. If he was cheap then fine, but he's not. Hence going to Burnley knowing he's hardly going to play.
This summer was simply the natural end of a cycle for some players (overdue for one or two) and I think a change benefits them and the club.
There's a tendency (not suggesting you) to treat the end of contracts as if we've cancelled them or released them on a free transfer.
