Ethan Banks-Landell

I've liked what I've seen so far, but far too early to tell. Nearly all of us thought Edgar was decent when he first came in last season for example.

What's nice is that we have options there at last, which all seem to on first glance be a big improvement on the last two seasons.

Yeah but to be fair a bloke with no legs would have been better than the previous incumbents

I like how we have a number of players who should improve individually over the season, as well as gelling together as a team. Ebanks-Landell and O'Connell are at key ages for centre halves where one full season of regular football can make a big difference. Moore at 26 is still quite young for a keeper but on top of that hasn't played regularly for a while and hasn't played that many games in his career, so he's another who will surely improve, possibly quite significantly, with regular football. Then there are others who should only improve like Lavery and Chapman.

Another factor looking further into the future is the contract situations of EEL and Lafferty - both expire in the summer so if they work out we could sign them permanently without having to disrupt anything going into next season.
Seen somewhere, possibly on rumour thread or Facebook, wolves have got the option of another year on eel.
Unlike the way we work, where the player gets the option.

I think it's too early to judge. He's a big physical presence though and that's a good start - but mixed views from Wolves fans on him and they should know better than us given he's only played 1.5 games for us so far.

We've had some very good centre halves down the years though eh? Shaw, Colquhon, Stancliffe, Murphy, Vonk, Gayle, Wirmola, Morgan,Cahill, Killgallon, Lucketti, Collins, Maguire. Strange how we managed not to find any under the previous two managers really?

Personally I'd use Basham at the back and free up a midfield place for Lavery. Or put Basham on the bench as a utility player.

I was agreeing with everything until I saw 'Collins' in your list of very good centre halves and spat my coffee all down my shirt !

I know! There's a few in there intended to provoke a reaction. I was going to put Stewart Houston in that list and Darren Carr but then I didn't think you'd take me seriously!

I don't know! We don't have a ball winning midfielder at all (yet).

Maybe, but would you not agree that if anyone can fill that role it's Basham? It's certainly not Coutts and as much as I like Fleck I doubt he'd excel there either.

Only seen him 2nd half ont telly against Gillingham and he got his head on most things but the ball seemed to go anywhere, I don't want to upset anyone but I got this scary feeling that he reminded me of Nyron Nosworthy. Sorry.

I have doubts over his heading too. It's something I hope they're working on with him - heading, jumping and how to hold centre forwards (like Maguire did). With his frame he should be dominant in the air and able to head it cleanly.

Wolves would want to keep him if he has a good season for us as they will probably be swapping places with us.

He will be a free agent in the summer as he will be 24 in december so we would get him on a free, early doors yet though but he is looking the part.

If he has a good season, they'll be flogging to the highest bidder - think Halford all over again.

I can see Utd putting a sneaky little bid in for him in January to try and grease the wheels to get him permanent - provided of course he is proving himself to be an asset this season. First impressions are good, but lets see how he is faring in deepest December before we get that mouldy groat from under the floor board that the board have been trying to hide from Wildthing.

Very difficult situation, eel has a good season and is out poty, price gets silly.

If I were the wolves negotiator I wouldn't allow it to happen but it would be nice to think there has already been talk of a fee.

This is a bit gloomy but if he has a bad season we don't want him if he has a good season £1m please.

The positive thing is he is playing for a contract that he 'must' have at his age with us or someone who will pay their asking price if we don't.

Who's to say we not agreed a deal with player and club already subject to us wanting to sign him at end of season ? A carrot for both ??

At risk of making myself unpopular, is there such a thing as Bladey shortsightedness? A few bad results and we're doomed, L2 bound, utter tripe and the worst side in SUFC's history, a few good results later and EEL is a real find after one performance and all is rosy.

Not to be antagonistic in any way, we just seem to be yoyo-ing in our opinions a little. It is only one brief example, of course - and thankfully there's a bit of balance on here and a few saying let's see how this plays out.

UTB.

Lose - L2 and then non-league
Win - Champions elect, watch out Man City.

What did they use to recruit Hussey, Clarke, JOC and Lavery?

Still, it's a good line. It'll have the S2 faithful rolling in the aisles. Can someone follow up with the fax machine one?...

He looks the part I'll give I'm that, but wasn't it the wolves fans saying he wasn't too good? Opinions I guess, I really hope so because he does have something about him to become a culture, a la Morgan, fingers crossed

I think they generally said he would be a good signing for league 1 but not quite good enough in the championship (similar to Brentford fans views on O Connell). Hopefully, if they gain a year playing regularly in League 1, as both are still fairly young, they will become good enough for the championship.

I’ve not seen much at all of Landell so far (just his cameo against Gillingham) so can’t really say how good he is. My first impression was that he has a touch of the Nyrons about him (not all bad mind. Let’s not forget Nyron was quick, strong and did have some good games for us but they seem to have a similar awkwardness and eraticness in terms of playing the ball. Let’s just hope he doesn’t make a similar number of catastrophic mistakes) but the reviews are promising. I’ll wait til I’ve seen him play around 10 games before jumping to a conclusion either way.

I like Wilder's recruitment.

Some good team building from him down the spine:
- Goalkeeper at 26 who is already very vocal and can grow with the team. Could be a long term solution.
- EBL, quick, tall centre half who has been promoted before and who is out of contract in the summer. Nicely complements the left footed tall 22 year old defender we signed up. Early days, but could flourish into a long term solution. Wilson continues to play the role of back up and Wright imparts his experience.
- Fleck, 25 and over 200 games, another who with the right environment could grow and progress as the team progresses.
- Lavery, 23 with pace, another potential long term solution.

You can add to this Lafferty being out of contract and having played in the league above too.

Point I'm heading towards without going through the squad to a man is that there is potential for a number of players to grow as a group if they can bring success. Too much before now has seemed short term in nature. For the first time, there appear to be some genuine building blocks there.

I mostly agree. My only concern is that I would have liked someone with Wright’s good qualities who was also good enough physically and technically to be a top League 1 player. We’ve needed a leader/ organiser at the back which I think he certainly is but he’s not the biggest, he’s knocking on a bit, he’s slow and has played his entire career at a lower level. If we could have got someone like Beevers/ McFadzean/ Webster/ Morgan/ Pearce etc. I would be more comfortable. Similarly, I would have preferred to see COG or John Akinde (or maybe, with the benefit of hindsight, Omar Goble but I’d not seen him back then) instead of Clarke. Otherwise, I’m happy with our recruitment.

I still think Edgar was decent. Not fantastic but our best CB for the majority of last season. If he’d had better players around him I think he’d have been fondly remembered. Thought he looked good in the 352 system we switched to when Baptiste was in the side with him.

Baptiste didn't look all that at first, although the view from boro fans was different to wolves on eel. If he is good enough wilder will bring it out of him.
