These newer, more draconian financial rules are going to be a wake up call for a lot of players agents. Given the biggest spend by far at clubs is on players and fees they are the ones who are going to take the biggest hits.

My guess is that pressure on wages will be downwards at all but the PL teams and also that sides will run with smaller squads. This equates to lower wages and less jobs.

We might find that as we approach the start of the season wage demands fall and as we go past the end of the window free agents end up accepting a lot less money or dont find a club at all.
Draconian they may be, but there has to be some curtailment of the free spending some clubs are able to do. There are Blue and White neighbours that would gladly have had the hand break pulled a few years ago if it meant they could avoid the ignominy of the last 18 months.

They certainly wouldn’t have been happy with the handbrake pulled, they would have (and have) said it’s unfair that the efl won’t let him spend what he likes as it his money he should be able to do what he wants with it.

I just admit I don’t find the free transfer market all that compelling this summer.

I still think we will get a competitive squad together even if there are a few loans in there.

If we are reliant on Peck, Arblaster, Jairo and Rothwell, that’s competent in the middle without being spectacular. I’d say games are going to be won and lost by what we do further up and further back.

If we were aiming for: Alleyne (loan), Souttar (loan to buy) for centre backs, Sykes (free) as overall right hand side cover then I’m fine with that thought Souttar is a hard one.

Further forward, if we get Dobbin on loan and lose Brooks then that is workable.

Including Jairo that’s 5.

You’ve always got the option of playing 2 up front with Bamford, Cannon, Oné and Campbell which lessens the need for one more midfielder.

Then it’s a question of replacing anyone else who further sales. We’d definitely lose something if Burrows went and RND was his replacement though some seem to think RND is on his way. Peck would be a shame but depends on what cash is being spoken of. You can see a gamble on Phillips or Smallbone but then we are crossing fingers on injuries. Wouldn’t be against the Hearts player, Cammie Devlin, who is out of contract and coming off a good season. For Hamer, if he went I’d imagine an out and out winger comes in rather than like for like; BBD or Donovan for instance though I’d prefer we keep Gus for the entertainment value.

Either way, I think we have enough there to compete.

Warnock was the king of free transfers. Granted he signed 30 or so free transfers each season, a couple of them still came good.

Jack Lester

Steve Yates
errrrrrrrr Keith Curle?
Starting to struggle now. Ullathorne?

Up front, it would be great to get a fit and focussed Campbell of a couple of seasons back.

We know what he is capable of with the right mindset (and fitness level) - be like a new player.
