Deluded optimism

Wishful thinking when this is final season of parachute payments. Suspect its this year or we are in it for the long haul though hope Im wrong on second point.
Or maybe the owners aren't pumping out their own money like Wrexham and Birmingham this season, as they want to see how we do with the remaining parachute payments, then next season (no matter what division we're in), we might then start seeing them spend some of their own cash on the squad.

Anything possible I guess, just my opinion. You’re equally entitled to yours.

Wrexham and Birmingham owners have put money in but being successful American business men they have also greatly increased their commercial activities therefore increasing revenue and club value overall. This is a scenario that has been happening throughout football for sometime especially with FFP rules. Unfortunately with the way we have been run previously we haven't fully taken the new way of doing things on board. Hopefully the new owners will and take it forward.

Is this a coping mechanism? Expect the worst and you will never be disappointed. I get the need for caution, as we are in a period of change, but then again I haven’t seen many claims that HMS Pisstheleague is being prepped for launch. I think the “happy clappers” are just excited to see something new, I know I am. What I’m not doing is worrying about it before it happens.
Also, I suspect fears that we will face wilderness years are really fears of Wilderless years for many posters.

But that's not actually unreasonable, is it? It's an understandable fear. When Wilder came in the first time, that's precisely where we were and had been for many years - in the wilderness of League One, with a succession of managers trying - and failing - to get us out. Wilder comes in, and - bang - 100 points, win the league, thank you very much, out we go. He made what had started to look like an impossible task, look ridiculously easy. Yet it can't have been that easy, otherwise why had a succession of ostensibly competent managers made such a dog's dinner of it, and ultimately all failed?

There's a popular saying that fear is irrational. But when you delve deeper, most fears do actually have a rational basis or root. Fear of heights - well, yeah, if you fall from a great height with no parachute or soft landing spot, you die. Fear of flying - similar to the fear of heights - something goes wrong, you plummet to your death (or blow up mid-air, or crash on landing/take-off). That's the rational part - the basis of the fear. The irrational part is thinking that one of those catastrophic things is likely to happen to you when you fly, when the truth is, that flying is the safest form of transport, and everyone knows this. Yet loads of people have a fear of flying, and relatively few people have a fear of travelling in a car, even though most people know that you're many, many times more likely to be killed or injured travelling by car than flying.

Point is - to bring it back to the Wilderless=wilderness fear that you referenced in your post - there's a very sound reason why a lot of people have that fear: we were stuck in the wilderness before he came - that's the rational basis or root of the fear. The irrational part is thinking that every manager who comes along other than Wilder, is going to get us marooned in the wilderness of League One again. We all know thinking like that is irrational - there's loads of Championship managers every year, who successfully avoid dumping the clubs they're managing in League One; and only very few who end up getting their clubs relegated to League One.

But it's like the fear of flying - some people, for whatever reason, see the big, heavy lump of metal, full of aviation fuel, on the runway, looking for all the world like it can't defy gravity, and if it does it could very well blow up, and panic. And no amount of reasoning with them about how safe it is, and how unlikely they are to be a victim, helps: "Big plane, full of fuel - shit!"

Same with the Wilderless=wilderness thing: "Not Wilder, doesn't know how to keep us out of League One - shit!" And, again, you can reason with them all day about how irrational their fear is, but no amount of reasoning will erase the rational root of the fear, ie, that Wilder was the only manager who actually did manage to get us out of the wilderness of League One, when everyone else failed. So the fear remains, no matter how irrational it is.

TLDR version (with thanks to Frank the tank for inspiring me to use the word "fannies" to make the point):

• Some people are fannies about flying - they need to man up.

• Some people are fannies about who's managing United - they need to man up.

But in both cases, just getting on at them about manning up, probably won't help!

We av now taken out a further large loan from the dodgy Australian bank on the basis of projected income from promotion /parachute money if again relegated in 2027 .How I don't know -crazy.
The manager states we will spend SOME of the 20 plus million we have received in transfers.
We supposedly have a consortium of very wealthy owners who seem very reluctant to speculate any more of their own cash.
The squad is far weaker than the end of last season and we start again Saturday. Now need 2 centre halves not one plus others.
I will put my hand up and stand in the corner until the end of the transfer window has a bed wetter.

6th to 10th this season.

New owners, management, players, systems, fans uncertain, some waiting to kick off at the first opportunity.

Lots of uncertainty and moving parts that need to settle.

Impressed with Selles' style and communication ability already. An upgrade for me, so far.

Intrigued.

We all know what the play-offs does to us. Ipswich and Southampton have obviously stronger squads than us. Brum have a very decent squad and huge momentum (loads more points than we had when we kicked out of L1 and a much better squad). Coventry and Millwall look to have done good business so far. Norwich, Swansea, Derby, Portsmouth will be stronger. Leicester, despite a points deduction, have some very strong players at this level. Who knows with the focus and money Wrexham have behind them. Likely top half at least.

I do not think this league is weaker this season. I think it's much more competitive.

I felt the league became stronger even at the end of last season, as shown by us losing against Oxford, Millwall and Plymouth and only winning twice after March. I agree the relegated teams look strong on paper and there are many others who look to be improving and building something.

I really don't think you can say we're miles off it and we're deluded to be optimistic. The neural view seems to be more optimistic than our fab base. Having listened to NTT20 and Benjamin Blooms predictions (both of whom have phenomenal knowledge) they have us 3rd and 4th this season.

You have to take the division as a whole and I suspect it'll be more competitive this season, but a lower points total to get automatic. Ipswich I could see winning it quite comfortably as they have a great squad and stability. Southampton have depth but I completely untested young manager (in England), so could very much go either way. Whilst Leicester have a great squad they're a bit of a mess off the pitch and who knows who'll be sold and how bad the deductions could be.

After that we have one of (could argue the) best squad, have reasonable stability squad wise and a manager with EFL experience. The likes of: Birmingham and Norwich seem to have strengthened and will no doubt be challenging for top 6 , and Coventry are in a similar boat to ourselves.

Ultimately there's no reason to believe we aren't capable of being in and around it this season, our squad is stronger than this time last year and we picked up 92 points that season. Yes we still have business to do, but so does just about everyone else.
I listened to the Second Tier podcast, which had us third. But they seemed to regret their decision, maybe because the news of Moore and Ahmedhodzic going (with no known replacements) were announced after they made the prediction.

After this game tonight, we're 4th minimum🤣. Forgot how poor this division is🤣🤣⚔️⚔️

So bloody frustrating. Hopefully personnel improves, but this is not good
