Who Could Come Good?

…out of the current crop?

Up to his injury, Sam McCallum was the one who stepped up and surprised a few with his performances last season.

So who do we reckon/hope could do the same this season?

McCallum for sure. Was comfortably our best LB before he got injured. I agree on Chong too. He's one who would certainly do better in a more counter-attacking side, akin to how we played in the 2nd half at Derby. If we adjust to a playing style closer to that, rather than the more passive, ball-retention based approach we've tended to take in recent years, I think he could do alright.

Not really many in the squad that I think could really push on who aren't already doing so. CB - Tanganga is an average player, McGuinness is very poor at anything besides aerial battles, and he's questionable at that. Seriki is a very competent RB thanks to his pace, but needs another to provide legitimate competition to help him progress.

Matos and Rothwell, I am prepared to see little improvement from them. Neither showered themselves in glory last season, and Rothwell in particular has a track record with Leeds and Rangers.

Bamford is likely going to be carrying the goalscoring responsibility on his own unless we get another good forward in. Campbell seems uninterested now, and Cannon has had more than enough time to show his worth, and it just hasn't come.

Our season is going to live or die based on our efforts in the transfer market. If the incomings provide enough of an improvement, then we could do very well. If not, then I won't be looking too high up the table methinks.
 
I'm hoping that having played on the biggest stage and having the boost that'll provide, that Chong can step up and do a bit more, now that Brooks has gone and he probably moves up the pecking order.

Arblaster and Rothwell getting a preseason in them and getting fit might bring a bit of life back into the team when last season we were having to integrate them as the season went on, while hoping we could get the job done in the Jairo hour.

Last chance saloon for Cannon but if we can find out what he's good at (is there anything?) then a 10 goal season would be a success for him, albeit still not justifying the price we paid for him.

If all the unfit crocks can manage to stay injury free and we make 5 or 6 decent signings we have the makings of a competitive side but I won't hold my breath.
 
Im hoping Marsh has a break out season, but think hes not physically built for championship football, hope he strengthens up and proves me wrong as the bits ive seen of him he knows where the net is
 
One’ has the most potential but I still think we might cash in on him before the window shuts.
 



If we switch to 3 centre halves and wingbacks I’d hope to see the best version of Harrison Burrows and Femi.

Still think Wilder plans on 4231 but the players currently on our books definitely favour 3 at the back.

I honestly forgot we had Matos. I don't remember a single thing he did last season.
 
We really, really, really need it to be Hamer and Arblaster. At their best, they are genuine difference makers

Chong had about 3 good halves last season and was pretty disappointing otherwise. There's clearly some ability there though. Not overly confident we'll see more positive consistency from him but 🤞

According to claim in the Turkish media, Sheffield United midfielder Alex Matos is on the verge of signing for Göztepe.
 
Let's be realistic, the only players who could hold their heads high after last season were McCallum, Seriki, Brooks and Peck. One has been sold, one will probably be sold, one might be and the last is returning from a serious injury. The rest of the squad either need to be shaped up or shipped out.

There were mitigating circumstances for Arblaster, Cooper and possibly Campbell but that ended at full time against Derby.

I thought we'd shifted him.
Must have been one of my optimistic dreams
