Are there really no players in L1 or L2 with the ability Hourihane had when Barnsley bought him, with scope to improve and develop into a better player,at a good age and price, that would better serve us than Hourhane now?

Each time I've seen Brewster shoot from outside the box its landed in the top tier/corner flag! I like Brewster, but I'll be happier when he shoots from sensible ranges only at present!
i will be happier booker when brewster looks the slightest bit interested in playing for us he has to up his game with slav in charge he wont stand for performances he put in last season

I think you have missed some of his shots.
We will both be happy when they start going in from whatever distance

Hourihane would be a triffic signing for us. People saying he's on a downward trajectory, eh?

He wasn’t the most popular amongst the Swansea fans and seems to be on a downward trajectory based on the last couple of seasons. Even though our midfield was shite last season I’d struggle to see who he replaces to be honest.
How do you work that one out?

Season before last was his first PL season he made 27 apps and scored 3 goals.
Then Villa strengthened, and in Jan he went to a team in and around the Championship play off places and he scored 5 goals in 19. He started tailing off when Swansea did and when Cooper tried to make them more defensively solid.

He's infinitely better than Ben Osborn, based on last season better than both Fleck and Norwood. Although we're more in need of a right footer in midfield, I'll take Hourihane all day long.

looks more or less 50/50 on here regarding hourihane and i can see both sides of the argument it would certainly give fleck a boot up the arse to have a genuine challenger for his spot and agree on osborn for me he can only be a bench player for midfield personally think his best position is lwb hes never let us down when hes been put in there

Our midfield performed absolute levels above him in 19/20. Last season it was shite, but Hourihane had to drop down a division because he’s on his way down himself. Not hard to deduct really.

Hourihane can still do it at the level. He showed that when he first joined Swans & was in a purple patch. The problem is managing his mind & body it seems. If Jokanovic wants him I'm sure he has a role in mind & I'd support the signing as a temporary fix to help us acclimatise to the division. Of course would've preferred someone like Mowatt, but we are where we are.

It’s a good job we’re playing at the level we’re looking to sign him for then isn’t it?

Have they really though?
That's open to interpretation
Obviously. We had a very formidable midfield for 2 of the last 3 seasons, it easily outperformed Villa’s. Hourihane was probably only their 3rd best midfielder at the time also. But you’re right it’s a game of opinions. Maybe Fleck and Norwood are totally done, time will tell.

Fleck and Norwood were nowhere near good enough in the PL last season. I’m not sure they’ve got the legs for another promotion push. Even if they do … the thought of them playing in the PL again, two seasons after we were relegated, fills me with horror.

Baby steps, let’s actually get promotion before worrying about them in the Prem again, which I agree if it was to happen we’d need better.

Regarding this season though, they aren’t ancient. Players have had bad seasons and bounced back, Fulham, Watford and Norwich are very recent examples of players playing poorly in the top league but finding their level at the very top of the championship.

Preferably we sign someone better than what we currently have, but I reckon Hourihane isn’t

I suppose it depends on the fee and the wages we will have to pay

Hes an improvement on set pieces and goals scored with our current mid field options
If this is a marquee signing I wouldnt be impressed but if its a sensible fee / wages signing he would be a decent addition to the squad not a definite starter every week unless his form dictates otherwise

I think CH has got more creativity in his big toe that what was served up by the likes of Fleck and Lunny last season. Plus he's a dead ball specialist and we have been absolutely abysmal at corners for years now. Definitely better than what we have got. Good signing for me.

As could be levelled at many other members of our squad at the moment, I'm wondering what isn't clicking for this lad?

Such a promising loan signing, he ought to easily dislodge someone and get into our side, he's such a proven performer at this level, should boss games and has such a quality deadball delivery. He delivered as recently as last season at this level too, for Swansea.

Wonder what's wrong?

See the Swansea fans views.

I stand by everything I ever said on this thread…🤪

Nothing wrong with his two corners for Egan’s goals

If the agreement says we can send him back in January then we should. We desperately need midfield reinforcements and his wages must be eating a fair chunk of our budget. Although less than 45 minutes his performance against Millwall was dreadful. Either he just can’t do it anymore or we just aren’t a good fit for each other

Sheffield United could opt to send Conor Hourihane back to Villa in January

The signing of Conor Hourihane was met with open arms by most Sheffield United fans. But could the Aston Villa man actually be sent back in January?

Well, judging on what Slavisa Jokanovic said recently, it doesn’t seem to be completely out of the question. The United boss admitted a few days back that he wants 2 wingers, and a holding midfielder in January.

If you ask me specifically what I need. I need two wingers, and one holding midfielder. And that’s it,” Jokanovic said.

Naturally, that calls into question the future of Hourihane, who has simply not got going in red and white yet.

CH was touted to every club and their dog during the summer by Villa for rather princely sums. They knew there'd be a Championship club that had a bad start and would be desperate enough to take him on.

Enter the Red and White Wizards...

Not everyone at the Lane was overly excited by his signing.
It felt like a last minute swoop just to get a body in.
He was going to be a slight upgrade on Norwood at best, and right now I'm not sure if he's even that.

Assuming he's on huge wages too, yeah I'd send him back.

He was needed to provide cover in case of injury/illness/suspension, as are several of the squad players. That is why there is a 23 man squad.
If he is replaced by someone better than we have at present, then the current player becomes part of the rarely used squad.
