Evening S2, apologies for the delay for everyone who was waiting for this. Anyway, finally, Roygbiv and I were both able to get on either end of a Skype call at the same time, and record our playoff second leg reaction podcast, aka not your typical Blades playoff failure.

In the second half of the podcast we pick out our favourite David McGoldrick moments from his Blades career, in tribute to one of our favourite-ever players. Thank you as always for listening!

With regard to your early discussion on it not being so bad being a Blades fan. I couldn’t agree more.

Imagine being an Everton fan. ‘Medium mensae obscuritatem*’ should be their motto.

Give me our rollercoaster any day.

Another great listen, ta.

* dodgy Latin translation of mid-table obscurity.

I was going to suggest Forest in 1990 for a memorable match review until you said nothing pre-95. In light of the last week or so, it had a pitch invasion, although I don’t remember any players being assaulted!

Thanks as always.

Because I'm cool and interesting, I was listening back to the pods around Slav's departure (snap reaction to the sacking and Bristol City home) and it really shows how far we came this season from the depths of despair to another glorious Blades failure. Seriously though, just to reach the play-offs really was a fantastic achievement, and when you factor in the Covid disruptions, fixture congestion and numerous injuries in the squad, you've got to hand it to PH, the players and the coaching staff. It's a credit to Heckingbottom how he's changed peoples' perception of him in such a short space of time. Nothing's changed my opinion on the Yusuf press conference though - batshit!
I recommend a re-listen before you review the season for some added context.

How about some Top 10 specials?

Top 10 SUFC goals
Top 10 free transfers
Top 10 loan signings (if you can think of any good ones other than Henderson and MGW)
Top 10 wins against the odds
Top 10 most disliked opponent players

(All post-1995, I guess...)

I like this, particularly the last one! Thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah I think I will. I did go back recently and listen to the one we did just before Jokanovic was sacked, where we ranked all the players in the squad and basically said we'd be ok saying goodbye to about 90% of them. I don't even know if I'd back down from many of those opinions from that time, as you say it's remarkable how much we improved once Heckingbottom took over. Our player ratings are going to be tricky because most players were probably 3-5 marks out of 10 better under Hecky than in the 19 games under Slav.

On a similar note, I listened to the mailbag episode as well - your laughter at the mere mention of Jack Robinson seems a little uncalled for now ;) Doubt we've ever had another season with so many contrasts

On the back of Top 10's suggestions how about....
Top 10 "WTF have we signed him for" Blades but turned out to be fans favourites

May I suggest Top 10 controversial moments and F**k-Ups (eg. Battle of Bramall Lane, Tevez Saga, Villa Hawkeye, Deane/Fjortoft sales, Interpol's Paul Woolhouse, Sam Hashimi, 93/94 relegation, Chedwyn Evans etc.)

Maybe you should give each player 3 marks, under Slav, under Hecky, and overall!

I like the Top 10 approach too. I was thinking about suggesting something similar to the MOTD top 10 format, but obviously for the Blades.

That's my book - that I started and will one day finish.

'It could only happen to the Blades!'

It could probably stretch to 2 books!

Ha, this reply was sat unsent from last night in case “the book” was a secret project… then I forgot to ask DB whether it was or not…

I’ll be Roygbiv -style “fuming” if you get to do this one, since I suggested a “top cock-ups” pod near the start of the first lockdown, only for Deadbat to claim we couldn’t do it because he was was writing a book on it.

Best part of two years later and WHERE’S THE BOOK, DB?

Man’s the podcast version of Pete Towshend.

Couple of suggestions of Classic Matches

The 2-0 win on the opening day of the 97-98 session against Sunderland

The 2-3 home defeat against Norwich from the year before (?)

The 4-4 against Birmingham.

We all know that book has no ending. Unless the Blades cease to exist (heaven forbid) they will continue to fuck up ad infinitum. As sure as day follows night, the Blades will find a way snatch defeat from the jaws of victory…and failing that, bizarre external forces will conspire against us. It’s the United way (at least it’s never boring though).

Goooood morning S2 - forgot to post this the other day, oops. Roygbiv and I put together our marks out of 10 for the whole squad (excluding anyone who played fewer minutes than Lys Mousset, who we just talked about briefly instead) in our mammoth player ratings pod, if you're looking for something chunky to listen to this morning.

We stuck to a max of 3 minutes per player, with a couple of optional timeouts for when we felt it necessary to expand a bit further. Find out if anyone was worth a perfect 10, and which player finished bottom of the class, right here:

Thanks for listening!

Started listening to it, only got through the defence so far. I disagree on Max Lowe, I'd rather get Enda off the books and keep Lowe as I'm sure they'll be on comparable wages, one is young and just had a good season in the Championship, the other one is on a downward trajectory. The problem with Lowe will be whether he wants to be at the Lane or not next season, I suspect not with some of the comments I've read from him in the press.

Don't misunderstand me, I would LOVE to get Enda off the books. I think that would be arguably the best bit of business we could do this summer given the last two years and the contract he was (deservedly) given at his peak. Those two things are also why he's probably going to be here until his contract expires, though.

Lowe will be far easier to shift, as Forest's January interest showed. Not that I'm desperate to get rid of him, just that we don't need this many left wingbacks, especially when two are on Premier League wages.

I think we'd all prefer to get Enda off the books instead of Lowe but there's no chance anyone is coming in for Ends and paying him what we are. Out of our 4 LWBs Lowe is likely the only one to attract any interest

Fair point on both. I suppose if we sent prospective buyers a youtube montage of his nutmeg season in the PL we might stand half a chance?!

I'm glad we didn't accept £2m for Lowe though, I think if Forest want him we need to get £5m+ now.

Now RND will be a World Cup star we might get megabucks for him as well!

Fantastic pod as ever lads, always so well balanced. Your contributions to this forum are top notch. Thanks for all your continued efforts, enjoy the summer and I look forward to hearing more pods & Roy's roundups soon. 10/10 to both of you. Cheers.

Enjoyed the first half of this as I was running, but it strikes me that we really need to look at players in combination to get a proper feel for how they've done.

Egan - looked flaky until he had Basham alongside, but as a pair they were mostly really good. Whether this was the confidence of a three and a familiar system I'm not sure, but his performances were night and day.

Davies made Stevens look terrible largely by cutting him out of the game. Would love to see if it is borne out in his pass maps, but my perception of Davies was that he routinely looked to move the ball inside (I'm one of Slav's latter games, think I noted the 83rd minute for his first pass to the left wing). When playing alongside JLT, Stevens was much more effective and involved in games.

Evening all - long time no pod. Roygbiv and I finally got chance to record an episode after a lot of recent Blades-related activity, so we discuss the Ahmedhodzic signing, the Tommy Doyle loan, Oli Burke departing, Tom Lawrence potentially inbound, and other ins, outs and maybes.

Then, we break down "How To Win Promotion": a detailed look at everything that needs to go right / be different this season, and how likely we think each of those are to actually happen...

Thanks very much for listening, really appreciate it!
