Evening all - long time no pod. Roygbiv and I finally got chance to record an episode after a lot of recent Blades-related activity, so we discuss the Ahmedhodzic signing, the Tommy Doyle loan, Oli Burke departing, Tom Lawrence potentially inbound, and other ins, outs and maybes.

Then, we break down "How To Win Promotion": a detailed look at everything that needs to go right / be different this season, and how likely we think each of those are to actually happen...

Thanks very much for listening, really appreciate it!

I enjoyed the pod and I think you’ve made me feel a bit more hopeful for the season. Getting promoted sounds a piece of piss!

Don't misunderstand me, I would LOVE to get Enda off the books. I think that would be arguably the best bit of business we could do this summer given the last two years and the contract he was (deservedly) given at his peak. Those two things are also why he's probably going to be here until his contract expires, though.

Lowe will be far easier to shift, as Forest's January interest showed. Not that I'm desperate to get rid of him, just that we don't need this many left wingbacks, especially when two are on Premier League wages.
It’s a ruthless and cut-throat business isn’t it? We all loved Enda and now, apparently, we all want him sacked. Fickle world. I wonder what the pros really think of us supporters? Clueless wankers that exist to pay their wages perhaps?

hello beans, hello roy.
been checking in for the latest iteration of bladespod.
no sign of you guys.
hoping you are both well, should we be concerned?
maximum best wishes, nezimão (aka kyiv blade).

Evening all,

Roygbiv and I just recorded our season preview episode, where we discuss the arrivals of Khadra and Clark, youngsters departing on loan, best case / worst case scenarios for United this season, predicting who's heading up / down, which teams will surprise, who will be our player of the season, Watford, seeing the Women's Euros at Bramall Lane, and a fair bit more.

Thanks as always for listening!

Cheers gents. Will download and listen on tomorrows long journey 👍🏻👊🏼

Good listen. I agree with your assessment of our chances and the prediction of 5th.

As you described, we'd need too many uncertainties to materialise positively for us to be in with a shot at the automatic places.

Too many of those uncertainties, to my mind, have an improbable likelihood of coming good; Brewster and / or McBurnie becoming prolific, Khadra replacing Gibbs-White, the wing backs being useful attacking outlets, a good run without injuries etc.
I don't think there's been enough signs to suggest these will all happen.

Having said that, we finished 5th last season and under Hecky we were probably more like 3rd/4th. I think our first XI is weaker than last season, but our squad is stronger - particularly at the back. If we do keep hold of Berge then I see no reason why we shouldn't be in that top 6 mix again.

Currently enjoying the pod whilst sat out in the Market Square here in Newbury, supping Triple Point. A most enjoyable Saturday afternoon.

I predicted 5th last season and nailed it. I'm cautiously optimistic about this season, I don't think we'll be quite good enough for the top two so I'm going for 4th. I'm a self confessed Berge fan boy but I think he is the key; if we keep him and he pushes on again in his newer more attacking role, then we have a weapon that few, if any other teams have at this level IMO.

This is fair.

My view on Khadra is that we don't need him to replicate what Gibbs-White gave us (although it would be better if he did), but rather we need the other loanees to contribute more.

Last season we had one excellent loanee, and the rest offered us very little over and above what was already at the club. We needed the bodies, but they were far too often not automatic choices for the first 11.

If, like Forest, we can get 4 very good loanees, rather than one excellent one, we stand a far better chance of improving on last season.

Excellent points, very well made. Couldn't agree more.

I'm an optimist by nature, but Doyle, Norwood, Berge (please let us keep him), Khadra, Ndiaye plus Brewster/Sharp should put the wind up any club in the Championship. Remember the lesson most of them gave Boro not too many weeks ago? Maybe too Osborn/Doyle/Coulibaly/Arblaster is the competition John Fleck needs to find some of his better form.

Bogle, Lowe/RND, Anel, Egan, Clark/JLT with Bash and Baldock for back up, should be as good a defence as the division has got.

We also have Wes in goal, properly backed up by Davies for a change.

I also think that we are better able to make use of five subs than all barring about three clubs in the league as well.

A run of better injury luck this season and I am thinking automatic...

Words I may regret in 9 months' time of course.

Evening all, new pod here looking at the Watford game and ahead to Millwall (plus some Euro 2022 chat at the end) - going over the weird Ahmedhodzic suspension news, Max Lowe's dreadful cameo, the impending arrival of James McAtee, and the inevitability of Jake Cooper at the weekend.

Thanks for listening!

Delighted to hear you pair wax lyrical about the Euros and to hear you will be going to support the women's team at the Lane. I've got my season ticket sorted and me and my partner joked about doing a Blaydies Pod but you two covering it will do for me. Proud of the club for stepping up to host games back in 2018 when not many others came forward, and for them now making the move for the women to play at the Lane

Blaydies Pod sounds a great idea. Go for it

Recording tonight. Get a confirmed tick on it
Sorry if this is a bit random, but I would be interested to hear both your thoughts on pushing N’Diaye forward again to get the likes of Khadra in the team.

Reckon it would be interesting to see if it could recreate the kind of link up and rotation we saw with Berge, MGW and N’Diaye in the Fulham 4-0 and the 2nd leg at forest. Especially seeing as N’Diaye looks stronger and a more complete player, would be interested to see him lead the line again

As another way to squeeze in another attacking midfielder, I think we seriously have the option of going four at the back now that we have Clark to play next to Egan. I'm not advocating starting the game with a back four because Bash/Anel look to be perfect for the RCB role. But, if we're chasing a game and need to add more attacking threat, I can see it happening (especially now we also have the option of using 5 subs).

I mentioned in the last pod that my front 3 would have been Berge, Khadra and Ndiaye on Saturday. I did think Brewster did well though. Probably the best I've seen him as the lone striker

Did you? I need to stop listening to the pod when I’m drinking.

I’m still underwhelmed with Brewster tbh, even acknowledging the good work he did do Saturday.

Once Sharps fit he’s still the main man imo, still very confident he’ll be another Kevin Phillips and keep scoring right until he’s 38/39 as he’s never had to rely on pace. Would be brilliant to get 30 games out of him and along with Pukki he’s gotta be the cleverest finisher in the league.

In the meantime, would be interested to just stick N’Diaye up top a la Messi because he’s just that damn good.

Biggest talent in the league, get him where he can do the most damage possible
