Based on what ?

Yeah I keep seeing how it's a big fuck up but I'm not seeing how. If we are waiting for a manager to finish a season with his current club for instance then surely that's better than just getting someone in now we don't really want just to play out this shit season.

If we appoint Heckinbottom or someone else just as underwhelming then that's the time to kick off . Not now when you are basing your reasons on journalists who evidently don't know much about what's actually going on.

In one of our recent games the sky sports commentators said "the Prince has confirmed that the next Sheffield United manager will be watching today".

Doesn't quite add up. Either SJ was always one of the potential managers and was watching that day, or the board have changed their mind about their own list and now deem every name on it unsuitable (hence now speaking to someone apparently not on the list).

Alternatively (and more likely in my opinion)... The media know next to nothing about who our next manager is going to be and so we're getting mixed messages about who is / isn't on the shortlist.
It doesn’t add up because you’ve misquoted what was said. They’ve clearly been working through due diligence of each candidate that remain in contention and the next logical stage would be to start to talk to the men themselves rather than representatives and see if they talk themselves up or down the preference list.
Even if true talking to SJ doesn’t mean he’s now favourite as we’ll be having the same discussions with all the others at which point we’ll know who our top target is and if anyone has ruled themselves out.

I understand the board needing to go through 'due diligence', but it's now been two months since CW left the club and time is ticking. We should have appointed weeks ago on the proviso that the new guy remains behind the scene studying the club on and off the field and players at all levels, leaving Hecky to take control of team selection and match day protocol.

As I've mentioned on another thread, my biggest fear is that as we've been delaying the interviews and selection process, I can just see a club like West Brom jumping in and snatching Jokanovic from under our noses. As soon as they are confirmed as relegated, (which could be as soon as today) meetings will take place with big Sam whom I'm sure will quit and if they don't go for Wilder, then I see Jokanovic fitting like a glove with West Brom and being outbid by them on wages and bonuses. We've just got rid of Villa taking all our targets, I don't want to see the same with another Midlands club doing the same.

Tabloid reporters often know more than they put into print.
The nature of their job means that if they betray a confidence then they don't get access to further information.
As a number of these journalists have all reported the same story simultaneously I think it's safe to assume they've been given the nod to report it by the media manager at the Lane.

I think it's done and the club are just having a laugh.

Maybe they have already chosen but have agreed not to announce in deference to his current club.
That would leave him to watch our matches and do his own due diligence on the players and transfer targets.

What was said then? From memory it can't have been too different from what I've put. They definitely inferred whoever the new manager was going to be.... Was watching the game.

Regardless of what was specifically said. You've completely missed the point of the post.

The media has said we narrowed our candidates down to a list of 5. The media also said SJ was NOT being considered. Now SJ is being spoken to

My point was there's all sorts of different narratives on what is / isn't happening coming from the media that all can't be true and should be taken with a pinch of salt. If it's true that we are now speaking to SJ, I think it's very much possible that the previous media line of he's not even under consideration, could have been incorrect.

Same people who get angry cause we pass the ball about instead of hoofing it upfield straight away

Finally FFS

When they say rescue ? Do they mean rescue us from the disaster that the media have created?
Sheffield media at its best once again no wonder the prince would rather do his own interviews so his word can’t be twisted

Everyone is watching all the time,”
“Whoever the manager is next season, they are going to be watching this game and the ones we’ve got left. What happens during those, they are going to be using that to help them make decisions. So that’s why, no matter what the situation is, it is always vital that you perform.”

Everyone, the young lads included, they have to remember that they’re being watched by whoever is going to be in charge of them going forward,”. “If you are a young lad, for example, you come in and do well and that is going to create a really good impression.
“The same goes for the more senior lads. It’s why, what happens now, is so important because it is going to have a huge bearing next season.”

Do you think that sounds like that’s someone in particular rather than a general comment?
We’re playing in the PL so I think it’s fair to say anyone interested in the job and wanting to be interviewed will be watching. It was totally taken out of context by media and fans who read what they want to see.

To be fair, I don’t blame Jokanovic wanting a decent salary. I would too to try and get a tune out of some of this lot.

It’s a big job for someone to take on. Billy, McGoldrick, Bash, Norwood, Stevens all seem to be in decline

Fleck, Baldock, McBurnie, Brewster severely out of form

Berge likely to go.

Really tough job for someone.

Fair enough, I hadn't seen that in full. From the media saying the list was 5 names and the sky sports commentary mentioning new manager watching, I assumed at the time that the 5 were watching. Reading it out like that in full and its clear it was much more of a generic statement than a clear signal of new manager.

Point of the post still stands though that the media said SJ not even being considered, followed by he's in talks and that it's possible they initially got it wrong and he actually was part of the shortlist all along.

(I've posted before...) Jokanovic needs to be careful he doesn't price himself out of the English Football market. To get a UK post Brexit Work Permit he'll need to have coached at a high level for 2 years consecutively, or for 3 years cumulatively out of the last 5 years. His time in Qatar WON'T count towards a Work Permit. He's OK to get a UK Work Permit up to November this year. (Based on his time at Fulham). But after that, he wouldn't have the required 2 years in the last 5.
Basically if he doesn't get an English League job by November, he won't be eligible for a Work Permit. If he chucks his weight around & demands loads of dosh before then - he's making his long term future difficult.
Pipe dream I know, but Utd need to bear this in mind if/when they negotiate with him.

But can’t he ring up the Home Office and ask nicely?

Poor......
Needs to have something about "The Prince is an extremely successful self made businessman" and/or "do you think for one minute they won't already know this" and/or "the FA wouldn't dare as they shouldn't be meddling in politics"
... I miss those days ...

And it wouldn't be a shock if they're monitoring fan forum's , a lot of getting fans onside is down to at least looking like you are following their criticisms

Madness lies down that route. You know what social media is like, is doesn’t matter what they do someone will criticise it.
I’m yet to be convinced they’re swayed by fan pressure when he’s got million riding on the right decision being made and most fans don’t have a clue about who would be the best appointment.

Not that Slav would definitely try and implement this formation. But if you look here...

Do we have the bones to play that way?

Interesting how the full backs are attacking but have different roles. Baldock and Bogle both have the pace to occupy the right flank as SJ uses it there, but I wouldn't be looking to Enda to cross from deep. Whether RND can do this I have no idea.

If we can get midfield/wide players in who can ball-carry, take players on and create chances then I'd fancy McBurnie in that Mitrovich role in the Championship. We need to get him back to playing how he was when he scored a bucketload for Swansea and not as a horses-for-courses target man type. If he's in space at the right place and time, he'll finish chances off. I haven't quite given up on him yet.

JOC and Egan/Bash should be okay in those CB roles, though it'd be a shame to lose too much of JOC's attacking prowess.

Thoughts?

One of the best posts over the last few days this one!

To answer your questions, I personally believe, that we would need probably at least 2-3 new players to play this way. Pace at the back and more mobility in midfield would be required for such a system.

Interesting but as you say McBurnie isn’t a target man and comes deep so I don’t see him in the Mitrovich role unless we play it differently.
If we use McBurnie and he comes deep it would open space for the two wider players to take up that position which would be hard to track but do we have those players? I’m not so sure but I’d guess you’re thinking Burke, Brewster and maybe Dids?
Brewster isn’t a running with the ball creative type and neither is Billy. Burke would be better as a winger but is he really good enough and does Dids have the energy, pace or ability to play there? I’m not so sure especially if the other role is given to Brewster.
I’d say to just upfront you’re looking at needing to buy/loan at least one starter, probably 2, ideally 3.
JoC is unlikely to be back so would need replacing and Bash couldn’t do either role. While Egan would be fine as the deeper centre half he doesn’t have the ability to bring the ball out so I think we’re looking at maybe 2 centre halves too.
Midfield - Can Norwood play the anchor? Maybe but we know he’s not good enough ultimately so you’d need to replace him. You’d also need to buy the other two roles so it’s still a total midfield refit, but we knew that whatever we do.
So that’s probably 7 first teamers and a few more for squad positions. It’s an expensive refit. We do have the fullbacks for it though 😆

Which 8-9 of our players do you think would fit into that formation?

Aye it isn't going to be cheap, but that was always going to be the case. I would hope SJ's reputation would put us in good stead for some quality loan signings.

Why won't JOC be back? His recovery is going alright, innit?
