In one of our recent games the sky sports commentators said "the Prince has confirmed that the next Sheffield United manager will be watching today".

Doesn't quite add up. Either SJ was always one of the potential managers and was watching that day, or the board have changed their mind about their own list and now deem every name on it unsuitable (hence now speaking to someone apparently not on the list).

Alternatively (and more likely in my opinion)... The media know next to nothing about who our next manager is going to be and so we're getting mixed messages about who is / isn't on the shortlist.

It doesn’t add up because you’ve misquoted what was said. They’ve clearly been working through due diligence of each candidate that remain in contention and the next logical stage would be to start to talk to the men themselves rather than representatives and see if they talk themselves up or down the preference list.
Even if true talking to SJ doesn’t mean he’s now favourite as we’ll be having the same discussions with all the others at which point we’ll know who our top target is and if anyone has ruled themselves out.

I understand the board needing to go through 'due diligence', but it's now been two months since CW left the club and time is ticking. We should have appointed weeks ago on the proviso that the new guy remains behind the scene studying the club on and off the field and players at all levels, leaving Hecky to take control of team selection and match day protocol.

If it's true that we are now speaking to SJ, I think it's very much possible that the previous media line of he's not even under consideration, could have been incorrect.

It’s a big job for someone to take on. Billy, McGoldrick, Bash, Norwood, Stevens all seem to be in decline

Fair enough, I hadn't seen that in full. From the media saying the list was 5 names and the sky sports commentary mentioning new manager watching, I assumed at the time that the 5 were watching. Reading it out like that in full and its clear it was much more of a generic statement than a clear signal of new manager.

Point of the post still stands though that the media said SJ not even being considered, followed by he's in talks and that it's possible they initially got it wrong and he actually was part of the shortlist all along.

I’m yet to be convinced they’re swayed by fan pressure when he’s got million riding on the right decision being made and most fans don’t have a clue about who would be the best appointment.

Interesting how the full backs are attacking but have different roles. Baldock and Bogle both have the pace to occupy the right flank as SJ uses it there, but I wouldn't be looking to Enda to cross from deep. Whether RND can do this I have no idea.

If we can get midfield/wide players in who can ball-carry, take players on and create chances then I'd fancy McBurnie in that Mitrovich role in the Championship. We need to get him back to playing how he was when he scored a bucketload for Swansea and not as a horses-for-courses target man type. If he's in space at the right place and time, he'll finish chances off. I haven't quite given up on him yet.

JOC and Egan/Bash should be okay in those CB roles, though it'd be a shame to lose too much of JOC's attacking prowess.

Interesting but as you say McBurnie isn’t a target man and comes deep so I don’t see him in the Mitrovich role unless we play it differently.
If we use McBurnie and he comes deep it would open space for the two wider players to take up that position which would be hard to track but do we have those players? I’m not so sure but I’d guess you’re thinking Burke, Brewster and maybe Dids?
Brewster isn’t a running with the ball creative type and neither is Billy. Burke would be better as a winger but is he really good enough and does Dids have the energy, pace or ability to play there? I’m not so sure especially if the other role is given to Brewster.
I’d say to just upfront you’re looking at needing to buy/loan at least one starter, probably 2, ideally 3.
JoC is unlikely to be back so would need replacing and Bash couldn’t do either role. While Egan would be fine as the deeper centre half he doesn’t have the ability to bring the ball out so I think we’re looking at maybe 2 centre halves too.
Midfield - Can Norwood play the anchor? Maybe but we know he’s not good enough ultimately so you’d need to replace him. You’d also need to buy the other two roles so it’s still a total midfield refit, but we knew that whatever we do.
So that’s probably 7 first teamers and a few more for squad positions. It’s an expensive refit. We do have the fullbacks for it though

Aye it isn't going to be cheap, but that was always going to be the case. I would hope SJ's reputation would put us in good stead for some quality loan signings.
