Keane's 2nd game as assistant manager for the Irish national team coincided with a well-paid offer to fly to Paris and work as a studio pundit for ITV for the Champions league final.

No prizes for guessing what choice loyal Roy took.

Not going to make Europe? Look at the list of English clubs that have played in Europe. I don’t see why we can’t aim to get there and who knows we might even be able to win a major trophy one day!

Whilst beating Wednesday will always be great no matter how shit they are, this isn’t us. It isn’t really an achievement. We need to judge ourselves against the rest of English football and not just aim to be better than Wednesday.

We took a photo of our players in front of our fans after the biggest winning margin over our rivals in over 70 years.

Do you think we've been spoiled too much with silverware recently or something? Not sure if you've noticed but we haven't won a trophy or a one off match of any significant for 100 years.

Ok let's consider a hypothetical.

At the end of the season SWFC get kicked out of the EFL and are put down to the 10th tier of non-league like AFC Wimbledon.

We are drawn against them in the FA Cup away.

Their team are filled with youth players and non-league players on minimum wage.

We win 4-0, a historic margin. Is that a great achievement on our part?

Should we do a team photo as if we had won a trophy?
 
Ludicrous comparison, if our team wasn't on it we wouldn't have won 3-0. They'd only won 2 points less than us so far this season, it was by far the biggest game of their season and it was at their ground.

You're trying to make out like it was a non-event and somehow doesn't count as a derby win which is utter nonsense. Yes it isn't as significant as the 4-2 in 2017 because of the situation but its still a great day for our club to assert itself as number 1 in the city and its only a photo ffs.

3-0, on terrestrial television, in front of a packed house of fans (who ABSOLUTELY thought they could beat us) and against a team who had got results against better teams than us. They didn't play the youth team against us and you most certainly did not expect us to play as well as we did because none of us did. We'd not seen the likes of Riedewald, Campbell or Ben Mee put in a 90 minutes of that quality all season.

Going off like we've won a trophy what the hell are you talking about?

I think you’re clutching at straws now, making up a completely random scenario to try and make your OP sound a bit less daft?!

The thing that makes the Sheffield Derby more intense than other cities is that we’re always in the same league when it happens. In my lifetime it’s never been a game that can comfortably be won by either team based on form or league status and has often gone the opposite way to league position and form.

They’d earned a few less points than us so far this season and it was at their ground. the argument that we expected to win and therefore we shouldn’t celebrate is absolute nonsense on that basis.

If you think otherwise you probably need to find another sport/team/hobby.

I never said I had an issue with how the team celebrated, I have no problem at all with how they acted on Sunday. It’s great to beat your local rivals and that should be enjoyed.

I have issue with posts that put the club down, that are negative and suggest we’ll never be able to achieve anything of note.

If Palace can win the FA Cup and Forest can play in Europe, I see no reason why we can’t aim to achieve something that similar sized clubs as ours have achieved.

I’m just saying we shouldn’t measure success with beating Wednesday or finishing higher in the league than them. We need to aim higher.
 
So when Wednesday fans and players celebrated a nil nil draw at Bramall Lane a few years ago, as if they’d won the F A Cup,instead of laughing our heads off at em, we should have sulked and complained to anyone who would listen.

No not at all, I was taking other people's arguments to their logical conclusion. The match over the weekend was not a normal one played under normal circumstances and it would be churlish to suggest otherwise. The fact that we were only two points ahead of them is to our shame, and our poor season is why our previous manager was sacked after only 6 games.

We should have been comfortable favourites, and we won comfortably. Yes we can celebrate, but 'great achievement' it is not.

Bit of a silly hypothetical but the answer is yes of course we should take a picture. Someone already showed you Newcastle doing it at Sunderland after you specifically said they never would.

This is one of the worst takes ever and there's about 3 others on the entire forum who agree with you. I just dont think you get it when it comes to derbies.

10 likes on the OP, and 130 likes on a post below immediately disagreeing with me, I acknowledged in the OP that I knew it would a minority view and I stated that again later on (circa 3-5%). Its a forum, its fine to have different views.

The other point I raised earlier, when Man U would thrash Man City under Fergie no-one would bat an eyelid and they would clap their fans as usual and head down the tunnel without taking a group photo.

That's what I want, indeed what we all want, that we normalize beating them so heavily and have high standards that we should expect to win each time and act accordingly.

Yes I got owned for the Newcastle point but looking back people mocked that as well and I think they also shouldn't have done it, in the same way that it was OTT for the England 2005 Ashes squad to have been give MBEs.

Fair play for engaging with the hypothetical, but I would find taking a team photo like the above after beating a non-league side a little odd.

The man utd comparison is quite daft. You dont want us to celebrate beating Wednesday because man utd didn't used to celebrate beating man city when they were one of the best teams in the world.

You say beating a non league side but it would be Sheffield Wednesday we're beating still. So yes take a picture.

Like I say you obviously don't get it so good luck to you.

What's really quite daft is that you, and several others, do not get that I did not say 'we' shouldn't celebrate. I have clarified/stated that several times.

The phrase was 'ott' and in reference to the players and management.

We won again last night and hopefully turned a corner, I'm not going to back down but nor do I think its conducive continuing this commentary any further.

A couple of points about Manchester.

(1). A huge amount of the Man Utd fan base don't live in Manchester. They have not grown up with a two team rivalry. They don't understand the city where their team plays.
My passion for wanting to beat Wednesday started back in the school playground. The arrogance of taking the piss out of our 3 sided ground compared to their brand new World Cup venue. If you're not from a city how can you understand that and develop that rivalry? (Their arrogance still persists today).

It always makes me smile when I see these manufactured 'derbies' - Ipswich v Norwich, Palace v Brighton, Forest v Derby and the classic a couple of weeks ago Wrexham v Cardif. FFS

(2). For years Man Utd showed very little concern about Man City due to the fact they believed they were leagues ahead of them. Their concern was Liverpool. They were their arch rivals.

(Similarly Liverpool don't really care about Everton. They see their rivals as Man Utd).

We have a unique rivalry in Sheffield. Of course those that criticise have never lived in a similar situation and therefore don't understand.

On Sunday I was under the impression our fans were locked in at the final whistle until the streets were clear.
How much criticism would the club received if they'd just gone straight down the tunnel and left our fans in the ground waiting to be let out?
I think we're in this together.
 
to be honest if they beat us at the lane in february it wouldnt bother me if they celebrated the same good luck to em pig fans are just whingeing because they know their team were awful and showed little fight on the day but i think theres another aspect here united have been awful all season and to get a win in that manner on local rivals turf and in front of a hostile crowd has to have meant so much to the players and staff

On the flip side, sending it out there again as a counter argument, ignoring the result, the team and standard of opposition. When we have a Squad photo for the year last year presumably because of the sponsors debacle it wasn't officially released on the SUFC Facebook site until 04/12/2024. I can't seem to find one for this season, but say if that was taken in August, look at how many newcomers there have been. Quite good to have a new Squad photo with the fans in the background too
