When did managers and players start going over to the fans after the final whistle?

We were rubbish, I wasn't happy but I didn't want to shout at the players either and not sure that helps. I enjoy post match celebrations like at Wednesday, Leeds, etc with the manager and fans, but that doesn't mean they should be obliged to do it every time.

Managers cant apologise on the pitch after the match, its nonsence , are they going to be micked up to the PA system.

What I really don’t like is the German / euro style hand holding and rehearsed interactions with fans, rowing etc. Like the holding up coloured cardboard and calling it an atmosphere or edgy ultras… it’s shite. I liked the serenading of England at the World Cup, I also liked the baldock song. I like to cherry pick what I like

Come and applaud the fans as a team or don’t, but when we lose expect some fans not to be ‘appy’

The first time I remember applauding the fans really becoming a thing was during Billy McEwan's tenure, but I think that was just players, not the manager. I was interested to read in Keith Edwards autobiography that he was never keen on applauding the fans, he just wanted to give them a quick clap and then get off the pitch.

They did, but I can also remember him throwing all his clobber into the south stand. Don’t remember the game but he ended up in nothing but his under crackers on the pitch in front of us.

As for managers, Bassett would applaud all sides of the ground apart from the away end only at the end of the season. Warnock did after some matches especially after beating Wendy.

Yes, the demand that they come over is another symptom of the decline in general supporter culture. It used to be at the end of the season at the last home game if enough people stayed behind, that they'd give a quick clap. The irony at BL is that if you stay behind the players (sometimes manager) walk around the pitch and large proportions of the fans that demand this attention have already left. Even after a great performance .

Rarely get behind them, spew vile invective if anything goes wrong, demand change after a few bad results, constantly rage bait and hyperbolic nonsense to garner attention. The modern football fan.

I've seen some sights at Italian Serie C & Serie D games after defeats. I'm not entirely sure of the etiquette. But basically, the players and staff have to go over to The Ultras at the end. The Captain will have a deep discussion with the Ultras Capo about the game. Points of view will be exchanged. I've seen The Ultras ask the Captain to send one player immediately to the dressing room - presumably because he's been shit.

Sometimes one of the other players will interject into the conversation, robust defence if you like. That is listened to politely, firm and passionate views welcome I'd say.

As the discussion weaves towards a conclusion, the mood becomes more upbeat. Lots of mutual nodding and pointing. Ending in a sort of - fucking come on, let's do this, see you all next week. Both the players and The Ultras clapping their little hearts out.

The Ultras will often finish by loudly and performatively applauding the other teams Ultras.

It takes some believing and fathoming out when you see it all unfold.

Back in those times though it would have been more common for players to interact with fans around the local area in day to day life. Now there’s more segregation between working class fans and millionaire players they need other performative stuff to try and build some sort of ‘bond’ with the fans.

It’s all a bit of a pantomime, but managers and players should know that performances we’ve seen this year are unacceptable. United fans are pretty tolerant with a lack of quality but they won’t forgive a lack of competency or effort, and that’s what we’re seeing this season. The players & managers can either front up and take their lumps or they can run away and hide from the hurty words.
