I don’t understand this “unaccountable job” narrative when DoFs also get removed.
What I mean is DoF buys shit players, manager doesn’t get results.
He then has the opportunity to proffer that it was the manager who was at fault and the players were fine whilst the manager will insist the opposite. How do you differentiate or so you always sack both?
Look at Spurs in recent times. Can’t remember who it was that got the sack (manager) but when they sold Bale they bought a right load of shite. I think Eriksen at 11m was the pick of the bunch while they spaffed far more on Lamela and 29m on some Spanish flop.
I’m sure the manager got it in the neck but that was DoF driven.
So I suppose it all requires the two to be locked at the hip from day one. One slight misalignment and it gets complicated.
I do think however the recruitment should work far differently and maybe it does and on the surface it just looks this way. The Prince alluded to as much:
What about Hamza? He’s be alright. Did ok before. Ben might do a decent job, check if he’s interested.
Whereas it feels like it ought to be:
We need a left winger and a right back. Piss off Jamie, Mike and come back with a list of 5 or 6 of each affordable and interested from a few different countries and let’s compare them and work down that list.
I’m probably giving a bit of a disservice but just going by the end result I could have done our summer recruitment with about an hour on transfermarkt and limiting the filter to UK based. It’s a small pool.
BBD, Phillips, Choudhury, Riedewald - been here before - super easy.
Donovan - called my mate who used to work for me and asked what he could do for me - easy.
Kitching - local Yorkshire boy, called a manager I speak to a lot. Reasonable pick up but after spending ages on Souttar who had been here before - relatively easy.
Doherty - no idea if we had any prior links but a few Irish already in the team, well known player, no reported rivals for signature - easy to moderately easy.
Maybe I’m being facetious here but what skills do Allen and Hoyland bring to support this list? Little to no creativity at all. You just get the sense the fanbase is looking for excitement from somewhere and with plan vanilla recruitment like this, they aren’t getting it. It’s borderline lazy from those guys. What do they do all year?
