The clock strikes thirteen
Post Packer, the Australian team have and will never go 18 years (we won in 86/87) not winning the Ashes. But when they win, they still celebrate massively, even more so the Australian media do, too. Read the Australian press before and after the Perth debacle, it's incendiary and adds to the difficult nature of the tour. When they regain the Ashes in a few weeks, they will celebrate on the field, with their fans, just as we did on Sunday. Quite right too.Ah no, respectfully you (and indeed many others) have misunderstood me- nowhere did I suggest they can't celebrate, I just think its there is a thing called moderation and it can get OTT.
For example the same thing was said when clubs would put out DVDs when they beat their rivals in a normal league game, if we did the same that would fall into that category.
Yes, cheer, applaud the fans etc. but taking photos like we won a trophy is a bit much.
Edit: With the Ashes there's a whole interesting discussion on that which probably shouldn't go here (though I appreciate I started it), let's just say I doubt the Aussies would have done the same thing had the roles been reversed.
2005 was the last year cricket was on terrestrial TV, and free to watch for all. It was also the best summer since 1981, and there was a bond between the players and public, that is unlikely to ever be repeated. The fact that the streets were full of celebrating supporters confirms there was a collective feeling of euphoria.
I don't think your analogy works, but it's an interesting point, nevertheless.
