Player Suggestion Scott Twine

Yeah that's a very solid point about the TV/Prem money, I'm still hoping we've got more than a handful of coppers to spend, because if the club really are planning to bring in that many players with less than £3m then it's going to be a case of a scattering of mediocrity across the whole team, rather than the targeted investment we need in the attacking midfield role.

If it weren't for the Jokanovic Experiment at the start of last season we'd have probably got automatics and would have coasted in to the playoffs...so I think we only need 3/4 players realistically.

First team quality replacement for MGW (which I'd suggest Twine could be)

Fringe player/Bencher to replace Hourihane (Coulibaly surely cannot be worse than someone we'd get on a free from L1/L2)

And then a couple of squad-fillers to help us through any potential injury crises, and we should be okay.

Not saying its going to happen, not saying its the only way to do things, just saying that I personally would prefer the club to spend £3m on someone like Twine, instead of spending it on 6 x £500k players, plus all their respective wages.

The squad/team is basically there imo. It's like a cake that's been baked and just needs the icing on the top replacing, now that MGW has taken his magic marzipan home with him

Based on what we have at the end of last season.

We need:

2 x GK
1-2 x CB
1-2 CM (Berge dependent)
1 x AM

At bare minimum. The two keepers might be Davies and Eastwood but they'll both likely involve a sign-on fee. How many others depend on how close some of the kids are.

I disagree about free transfers. There are lots of good free transfers out there. WBA have signed one of the best midfielders in the league for free. Bristol City have made 3 decent free (ish) signings.

We don't necessarily need to spend a lot of money on fees. Wages, more so. We do need to bring in more permanent signings though, but worth remembering we paid £0 for Fleck, Basham, Duffy, Jake Wright, McGoldrick and Stevens. Minimal fees for Lunny and Baldock

Personally there'd be no uproar from me, if the club decide he's not for us then he's not for us. I'd be disappointed if he went on to be incredible and we'd turned him down, but that's football.

I can't speak for anyone else but I mentioned above that I've only actually seen 3 full matches that he's played in, but that's still more full games than I'd watched featuring MGW, Ndiaye, Osborn, Robinson, Didzy, Coutts, Baldock, Stevens, JoC, Basham, Henderson, Wes, Egan, Fleck or Bogle before we signed any of them...and that lot turned out alright!

I haven't ever watched Erling Haaland play a full game but I'm still pretty confident he's shit hot.
I’ll see your
g MGW, Ndiaye, Osborn, Robinson, Didzy, Coutts, Baldock, Stevens, JoC, Basham, Henderson, Wes, Egan, Fleck or Bogle
& raise you [insert your own particular ‘favourite’ tosser]……….

Bit disingenuous to include Robinson (JLT variety I assume?), Didz, Coutts, Bash, Wes given the pelters they got (often afore wearing the jersey)

Then factor in the likes of Cranie, Stearman Wright, Leon, Ramsdale & indeed Billy ( not just from Fallowfield) who received a similar ‘welcome’

I’d also seen Mc B, Wallace, Caruthers, Davies, HourihaneHolmes, Rodwell,Morrison, Hussey, (?!?), Johnson, Robinson (C), Woodburn prior to us &! was, to a greater or lesser extent, happy with their signings
🤔

I agree we need cover at CB, although we could potentially be seeing Lopata as Egan's deputy. RND could be played at LCB to provide competition for Robinson, given that we have a surplus of left backs. But yeah, it starts to get a bit football manager there, so I'd probably actually agree with you about the 1-2 signings needed at CB.

Very strong points about free transfers though, I actually posted on another thread about how well Hudds and Luton have done this season with a squad based almost entirely on frees and loans.

I guess it's just the sheer size of the hole that Gibbs-White has left. That spark, that creativity, that movement...rare as rocking horse shit, especially to get on a free.

But like you say, we got Duffy on a free...and he certainly had that spark!

I'm just keen on Twine, I think he's got a big career ahead of him and will give someone a couple of thrilling seasons followed by a tidy profit, and it'd be nice if it was us ☺

I think we're actually arguing the same thing here, because you've just proved my point that it doesn't matter whether you've watched someone play 1 full game, 300 full games or 0 full games - some transfers are good and some are bad, every signing is a risk.

Personally I think Twine would be a great replacement for MGW, I'd love to see him sign for us and I think he's well worth £3m. Some will disagree, and that's football ☺

Bid involving a fee possibly means someone going the other way.
Burke ?

Aye
Unless……
We ( management team) don’t think he is ‘worth’ that
Or
He is not what we need
Or
We think there is someone better
Or
‘ull have just been taken over by someone with a pocket full o’ brass
Or
They’re flogging Wilks for a massive sum (&/or that bloke with 3 surnames ) & have (even more) brass to spunk
Or
it’s just tosh (whether ‘price’ / destination / alleged interest)
Or
Ronnie Pickering is the new club sponsor & is investing (some of) his YouTube royalties
🤔
I suspect that it's more likely that we don't have the money for players for significant sums. If on the other hand we sign others for similar fees then I totally take it back. I think the club prefers the short term loan approach which is not always cost effective in terms of high wages and loan fees but the prize is promotion thanks to said loan players in particular. MGW as particular example.

As for Hull and their money, good luck to them, it's just annoying to see a really good player, in my view, go to Hull but if he does indeed go there.

Tends to know a lot about our finances though.

He's an accountant and our accounts are publicly available..

Outside of that, I really don't recall him ever providing the inside track but he loves to present himself as within the Prince's circle.

Happy to be proven wrong but I've been waiting for a long time.

Didn't he publicly state he wasn't working for PA these days? Calling bullshit on this tbh, often speaks like he knows stuff but the reality is he talks a lot (quite sensibly admittedly) after the event.

If he does work for PA still then what the hell is he doing plastering our business all over Twitter?

I clocked onto his stats because a mate of mine who is a Dons fan was raving about him, admittedly only watched 3 games that he's been in but I've seen a few things that my mate's sent me that have got me going...

And then a bit more of his all round play...

https://youtu.be/4y2nN0PRk88

...personally I think we could do a hell of a lot worse with £3m.

Michael Higdon looked great on YouTube 🤔

TBF to Daz anyone with a true understanding of accounting can pick up our accounts, digest them and have a decent idea of what the crack is.

The accounts still don't give a true reflection of where we are from a cash flow perspective though.

I've no idea how close he is to PA but I know for a fact, at the very least, that he was a guest in PA's private box before the court case was settled as there's photographic evidence so it's likely he probably knows more than most on here or SM.

There’s only one way you become a “friend” to someone like the Prince and that’s by licking their ring piece. And even then he’d just be an acquaintance. I would imagine you’d have to be extremely close and trusted by the Prince for you to share info on which players we have bid for. Why would the Prince share that info? Especially knowing he’ll likely go on Twitter and share it.

He’s had a photo with the Prince and dined with him once or twice and he portrays it as though he’s on the inside with loads of info.

Weird bloke.

What I don’t understand is people being against this deal in favour of frees as this would ‘save the club money’.

Say it’s £3m for arguments sake. That won’t be up front, it will be more like 1, with 1.5 spread over three years and 500k if we get promoted. He will be on, at a rough guess, for a player coming from league one and having never played at this level, around 15k a week. Maybe 17.

Say we went in for Rothwell instead, he’s a championship player with higher reputation, with supposedly offers on the table from premier league clubs. If we sign him I suggest it’ll be on around 25-27k a week. Lowe signed for us on 30k in the premier league, so that’s what you’d imagine forest have offered Rothwell.

A 12k a week difference over a 5 year contract would work out at around £3.1m. That’s the Twine money right there.

When you add in the rest of these ‘cheaper’ free transfers, you soon start realising that it would be a lot more financially beneficial to shop lower down, pay a fee and save on wages. It’s actually the more frugal way in the long run. Especially when you factor in that a lot of these free transfers will have big fat signing on fees as they’ve deliberately let their contract run down.

It would be a punt on someone who has never played above L1. Rothwell has and proved to be an effective performer in the championship. Wouldn’t be against signing him, but £3m sounds a lot to me.

You have to take a punt. Look a Bowen for example, many wanted him here when he was doing the business for Hull. West Ham took the punt and look how well he’s done. Signing Twine for me would be something I’d wholeheartedly back. Gerrim in!

Darren is Prince's mate apperantly. I mean if we can't compete with Hull City, we are in deep shit. We should be all over this
