Planning permission for the south stand

Pros
Increased capacity
Looks smart as fcuk
Puts us even further ahead of Hillsborough
That rake of the new tier looks perfect
Gives the ground a focal point
Increased corporate revenue (a necessary evil I'm afraid)
Increased non-matchday revenue (catering/conferencing etc)
Improved catering
Possibility of non-matchday refreshments (possibly linked to increased beambacks)?

Cons
Will we fill it regularly?
Lopsided ground?
Increased prices to pay for it?
Does it put the much needed Kop improvements on the back burner?

On balance, I'm in.

The roof line of the stands will have to get higher at some point if the capacity is to be extended, I've got no problem with that. But the kop and John Street can easily be extended without having to do that, so why not start there? It would look better and be much more cost effective.

I might be missing something here but how can you increase the capacity without either making the stand taller or longer (back towards the road).

Probably no coincidence that we are dangling shiney shiney beads out there whilst the BRP is trying to get his mates to chip in.

I explained earlier in the thread, there's no need for the two levels of corporate areas on that side. Especially when the plans for the new South Stand include another two levels and all the parking is on the South Stand side.

So you would just take out the boxes and put normal seats in? I can’t see that increasing the capacity by much and would quite possibly result in a decrease in revenue. It’s not like the John Street stand regularly sells out, whereas the South Stand is always the first to sell out.

The Kop will be extended before the South Stand, you would have thought, because it already has planning permission, so presumably that is higher up the priority. The John Street stand won't be extended as you proposed, because there isn't a need to extend the capacity in the John Street, since the Kop and South Stand are already in the pipeline. I totally agree with you though mate, re the John Street, I'd love to see one deck less and more seating.

Would've thought the Kop needed some TLC before redeveloping the South Stand

Having said that I love the design and concept

Today's planning permission doesn't necessarily mean the Kop is now behind the South Stand in priority. Like you, I think the Kop is the priority.

Yes, I don't have the drawings to hand but judging by photos of the stand and executive suite, I reckon you'd get another 20 rows in there, so 2,000+ seats. Definitely an increase in capacity and also a more aesthetically pleasing stand/ground. More corporate areas are included in the plans for the South Stand so no revenue is lost, and I'd rather space was taken up by seats than corporate areas anyway. At the end of the day they were put on the wrong side of the ground in the first place, if the plan is to develop the more suitable south side, why not relocate them?

I agree there isn't while ever the entire stand is a family enclosure and we are in the Championship. Hopefully those two things would change with a bigger ground though.

Think it looks all out of proportion like Bellend Road what's vorpal blade 's view?

It not as lopsided as Elland Road to be fair! See photos.

Or St. James' Park. I still can't decide whether I love or hate that stadium!

I like both because they're both traditional stadiums, despite the extensions. As much as I don't like Leeds, Elland Road is so much better than the likes of Leicester City's lego stadium. The Lane is better than Elland Road though!

More aesthetically pleasing? You think shoe-horning 2000 seats into a space that wasn’t originally designed to hold them will make it look better than it does so already? Personally I think it looks ok now and the only reason for adding the extra seats would be increase revenue and I’m not sure it will, considering that half of the tickets would have to be sold to children and you would be unlikely to see them all anyway. I’d also be surprised if you can get 20 rows in there without raising the height of the stand as well.

I like the idea of an area of the ground with a high up panoramic view, as the South Stand upper would be.

But I don't like the imbalance that it would create.

Fuck knows why they didn't build John Street closer to the pitch. The space is there for a bigger stand on that side. We would've saved ourselves so much hassle if that stand and the Kop were done properly in the first place.

Eventually, if the club own them, there will be possibilities for demolition and redevelopement, with rental income in the meanwhile.

But you’d be planning for something that might never happen. Having said that I’d prefer your suggestion to taking out the corporate boxes.

Downtown or Down Town, its an issue if you are going to put it in, dare I say it, 'Massive' letters on the side of the stand. Its BDTBL to my knowledge or is that another Maggots or Magnet debate?

I'm never one to come on here and criticise the club but it doesn't seem that long ago that we were all discussing the removal of the badge lady on Cherry Street as the club shop was going to be relocated. Nothing's happened as far as I can see.

I'll believe all of this when I see the JCB's arriving.

It’s downtown, but I’m not going to object to the use of BDTBL...

I always thought it was down town as in its down town, because we don't really use downtown like they do in America, sort of "where are you going?" "daan town"

But either way, looks nice. Couple of typefaces I'd change, looks a bit too much like a Hallam uni building but I'd take it.

Interesting article n the Telegraph about the extra corporate hospitality recently done at Twickenham.

It has cost £65M and the ROI will take JUST 5 years.

That's what you get with posh seats and posh facilities - it gets paid off quicker an then there is more income for the club.

The other thing about the South Stand - it is FULL almost every game now.........someone care to tell me when the Kop was last full this season?

As posted before the SS facilities for the existing 8K punters belongs last century - I might just stop and buy a beer if it was (a) relatively quick and (b) you could drink it in peace without people shuffling/pushing past all the time.

We don't have enough quality seats - at last SOMEONE in charge at BDTBL has finally bloody realised !

Down town is a noun phrase, as in I’m going down town; downtown is an adjective, as in Beautiful Downtown Bramall Lane. (See my book For Who the Bell Tolls: the essential and entertaining grammar guide - now on sale for Christmas)

The South Stand always has seats available even when the OS says sold out. And not just at the Kop end as well.
