Planning permission for the south stand

If the kop is redeveloped by excavating the mound

..then each lump of earth may well have to be moved by one of the Army's robots. As you well know, there was a fair bit of ordinance dropped on BDTBL by the Luftwaffe and unexploded WWII bombs are still being unearthed. In 1985 we had a game called off when a 2,200lb UXB was found on Lancing Road.

That Kop redevelopment might just take a little bit longer than planned........

Agree, removing tons of soil from the Kop has loads of potential problems.

Hence why I thought the plan was to leave most of the mound as it is and just bolt on extra seats at the top, with additional enclosed catering, toilets and conference rooms underneath.

There would still be the issue of cramped leg room but at least the pillars would be removed meaning a much better view for many.

By all mean call me out for being H&S concious, but I think I'd rather we knew for certain whether there were unexploded bombs under the Kop, rather than be forever wondering...

I know this is sacrilege in many eyes, including my own, but couldn't we lend The Kop to W*******y (immediately prior to any planned demolition) to practice their bouncy thing for an hour or two just to test the theory ?

Only if we get to PL I bet, just like 'significant investment as soon as we got into championship'. Jam tomorra

Looks brilliant. Wished they’d refurbish the kop first though
Yes, I like the look of that. I expect that the revenue stream will make it more financially viable than making a proper job of redeveloping the Kop. However, I hope that there is a serious intent to build a new Kop from scratch should we make the Premier League, with all the money that brings.

Can someone confirm where this has been announced as actually going ahead?

So far all I've seen are a few graphics - all well done I should add - but definitely no firm commitment to begin this work.

Seems strange we don't put seats in the corner between the kop and south stand first or as part of this. I'd rather be in a decent corner seat than right at the back of that new south stand. Reminds me of manure where some in their big side stand are half way to liverpool. Video looks beautiful though.

All that's been announced is that planning permission is being sought, with a decision expected around March.

Looks great, and from a commercial standpoint makes sense to be able to increase the clubs offering. *If* the council approve - not a given with their track record - then it will also open the way to extend / rebuild the Kop at a later date with more available seats elsewhere in the ground.

Hope that's correct. I've watched that video (or similar) several times over the last couple of years, so understandably puzzled about the club's intentions.

I think most people would appreciate a decent makeover, but it's the Kop that seems to attract most attention, so the sooner we can replace the existing structure with something that is both good to look at as well as remembering those who actually pay for their seats. In other words, perhaps more leg room please?

Yes but as good as it looks has anybody considered my brick in the wall? No? Thought not, going to get Trump involved on it, I understand I have the power to stop the entire development, have you got a brick in the wall? Join me on my crusade it's called brixit. We shall not be moved.

They already have full planning permission for the kop. This is to get full PP for the South as they only have outline at the moment.

I hear that it will be done when the new retail quarter in the city centre is.....

I find myself saying this every time any of these plans come out, but why is nothing ever considered for John Street?? The ground will look lopsided as fuck when viewed from either end, with that humongous thing on one side and the tiddly little 25-row John Street on the other.

As with the Kop, this is for planning permission only, which I think can last for several years - 10? So, although the video looks great, I think we'll have to get promoted to see this. Eventually though I'm sure it'll happen which will be great. The one thing that hasn't been mentioned is that the capacity of the Lane will be above 40,000 if both the Kop and the South Stand get extended. On Radio Sheffield they mentioned the capacity will go up to 38,500 but it will in fact be more because of the Kop extension, which I think was to add 3,000.

The John Street, like the Bramall Lane end has little room for extension because of the proximity to the street. You've also got considerations to the properties behind the John Street regarding light etc, which probably explains why the John Street stand is chamfered at the John Street side facing the houses, allowing more light in. That's my guess. The South Stand will be higher than the rest of the ground but I don't see a problem with that; it is the main stand in the ground after all.

With the road being so close to the back of the John Street stand, what would you propose they do?

At the risk of being a negative ninny, I can't help but wonder if this will have a direct effect on ticket prices?

I'm talking about extending the seats, not rebuilding the John Street stand. No need for two levels of executive boxes on that side of the ground when the South Stand has all the parking and more room for corporate areas. It's a relatively easy and cheap way to extend the capacity and just makes perfect sense in my mind.

The John Street stand, in my view, was a bit of a rush job. We could have built it much closer to the pitch and there is also space adjacent to the south Stand too. We could have built a larger stand than we currently have, albeit with a shallower incline.

I'd love that but can't see it happening. The roof line of the South Stand, if extended, would still be much higher though than the rest of the ground. but I don't see an issue personally. I've been to St James Park and although its not uniform, its a magnificent stadium.

The roof line of the stands will have to get higher at some point if the capacity is to be extended, I've got no problem with that. But the kop and John Street can easily be extended without having to do that, so why not start there? It would look better and be much more cost effective.
