And I feel generous putting him on a par with Norwood, theoretically we could adjust players around and Lundstram would be 6th choice for 3 starting places if everybody was well.

Long term this is probably how wilder sees him he’s definitely the standout candidate for me in the squad who’s of a good age ie we don’t need to look for a long term successor too but who’s quality can’t be upgraded on.

It might be how Wilder comes to see him but I think he’s currently viewed higher. The lineup in the Fulham game was a good test case for that. We know Wilder tends to prefer a lefty at LCM, but he stayed in the team when Osborn was available. Now that might also link to Wilder’s comment of players “playing themselves out the team” and Osborn not being selected was a response to the Arsenal game. But at the very least it still shows that for certain games Lundstram is still pretty high in Wilder’s thoughts. Hardly a surprise given he’s started all of our league games this season.

I just don't think he's good enough. Sure he had a purple patch early part of last season where he chipped in with some invaluable goals and assists - but post that hes been at best average and a worst dreadful. We are having less and less of possession, and we need players who are comfortable on the ball and can carry the ball well ti avoid turning it over and gain control of games - these are attributes simply Lundstram doesn't have.

Couple of questions to those hankering for us to chuck a bit more money at him.

Given we are financially limited, do you really think we can't make better use of a potential fee (however small) and his wages?

Would you be happy for Lundstram to start in oir midfield this season and into next?

If we are prepared to pay over the odds for a player and back down too contract 'rebels' (Wilders & teams view), clearly this would set a precedent - is John Lundstram really the player we want to do that for!? Is he really that essential?

If any player isn't committed to playing for us, would you keep them in amongst the first team?

I don't see the point of dropping Lunny out of spite unless there is a similar quality replacement available. At the minute Berge and Ampadu seem nailed on. That leaves Norwood, Lunny and Osborne. Of those I think I would choose Lunny, with Osborne at left back.

When Duffy went in for a pay rise he was told by Wilder no and if you don’t like it go and find yourself a new club. Now what’s the difference between Duffy asking for a rise and Lund.In my opinion Wilder should have banned Lund from the club like he did with Duffy. Agreed right now he’s not out of the picture and with fleck out he will get starts but when negotiating contacts you have to take a medium/long term view especially as he is young and will be looking for a long term contract so signing him now for comparatively large wages on a long deal wouldn’t make sense for us.

the missed tackle against wolves doesnt excuse Stevens jogging back into position which ultimately was the issue with the goal. The pen at Villa, whilst not the best pen, he shouldnt have even been taking. That was down to Wilder / Wilder's staff not telling the players the order. The order was McGoldrick, Berge, Burke, Lundstram....mcgoldrick had been taken off and the others didnt have a clue so he stepped up. Wilder went mental at this staff at half time over the mess up, so personally feel its a bit harsh on him to get blasted for that pen.

1. I’d say something in the middle of our earners. He should be on more than say the squad members unlikely to start 5 games (Foderingham, Rodwell, Jags etc). He should probably be on more than Bogle & Lowe. He probably should be on something similar to or marginally above what Osborn is on. He should not be on the wages that our likely first choice starters are on (people like Egan, Basham, Baldock etc), and certainly not in the 20k plus bracket that McBurnie, Berge and Brewster will I’m sure be on.

2. It’s fair to say given when he signed, even taking into account the % rise after promotion, that he will be one of the lowest paid in the squad – and certainly the lowest to have played 15+ games last season.

3. I reckon he’ll have been offered something that would put him about in the middle of the squad in terms of earnings. He probably thinks he can earn more than that as a backup elsewhere in the Prem, or first choice in a Championship team. And that might be true.

McGoldrick knew he was to take penalties. The rest of the order never got passed on. Lundstram stepped up and took responsibility. In terms of of shouting instructions from the bench i assume Wilder thought the players had been told, so in fairness to him it was as much of a surprise as anything, and by the time he's seen what's going on the ball will have been on the spot. Likewise with the captain. I understand a good chunk of the half time team talk was Wilder laying into his staff over it!

Not fussed about Lundstram going, I was a fan before he was good and was delighted when he started off last season so well....one swallow doesn't make a summer though and those 3 months apart he has been distinctly average. Lee Evans looked good for 3 months but he was bombed out as well...

Does make you think though that someone may be lined up for Jan with us saying we are letting him go in the window, unless it was just to try and stir up some interest in the hope of getting a few quid as there appears to have been very little in the summer...

Same with berge’s against Liverpool I think because it was such a big chance to get something of a game we all expected too it felt like more of a let down than it actually was

I don't think he will get in another first 11 in the prem but low ranked premier league clubs will take him on a free (or low transfer fee in january) for what he offers in terms of energy and ability to close out a game as a substitute. I think someone like a Newcastle wouldn't hesitate to have him for a free and much higher wages.

Doesn’t matter what he’s been offered though. The club clearly feel it’s a fair deal, and have tried to make amends to break the impasse, but he still won’t sign. Fine, that’s his choice. If the club concede now, then every contract negotiation herein becomes that much harder, due to setting a precedent. Each negotiating party has to have a walk away position that they won’t negotiate on, the club feels Lundstram is asking for more than the maximum they’re willing to pay, Lundstram feels the club aren’t offering the minimum he will accept. So we part ways.

Not saying rangers pay prem wages but Lundstram probably isn’t on prem wages with us he’s still on the contract he signed for us when he left oxford plus whatever the percentage bump was for promotion it will still be a pittance by prem standards. Plus when he moves for free he’ll get a signing bonus in leu of a transfer fee which can be spread across the length of the contract thus supplementing wages.
