Sure. Can’t argue with that. But consider for a moment what the big clubs do. They sniff the slightest inkling of talent and they go in there and buy it up. Take Jacob Mellis of Sheff Utd as an example. Most of us had never heard of him when Chelsea snapped him up at 16 years old. It didn’t work out for him there but it’s not really the point, they got in early that’s the point.
My point is it was blindingly obvious what a good player Freeman was at Stevenage. We should have gone for him then.
As for Bogle...he’s another that I’d have gone for whilst at Grimsby. We can always jettison these players if they don’t work out, but we can’t buy them when they’re out of our prce range.
Yes but spending £1m on a player unproven above L1 or even L2 is a far bigger risk to a club like Utd than it would be to any Prem club or any the wealthier Champ clubs.
Taking Bogle as a good example, a player who has (so far) proven to be not good enough for the Champ (or even L1) but if Utd had taken a punt on him in any recent season and therefore allocated a large proportion of their budget to signing him, it would simply have meant that others wouldn't have been signed e.g. Clarke, who admittedly has far exceeded most people's expectations but had a far more solid track record.
Of course there are a few gems in the lower leagues that can hack it but in line with CW's comments about recruiting from L1 and L2 there are far more duds that can't.
