If he does come back, is it a case of managing him in a Ledley King type fashion where he plays once a week and spends the rest of the time in the gym, swimming and inputting on the coaching side of things?

If we have an important mid-week game for example, he doesn't play the Saturday and JLT comes in, something like that because at his best or even at 70%, he's still the best defender we've got.
 
Jack O'Connell must wonder every day where he'd be at if Covid hadn't hit. The timing of that whole thing was horrible for him.

Without lockdown the injury would never have happened in the first place, he'd have been on the beach at that time of year.

He'd then more than likely have started the following season playing in Europe, and as a result of that and the fact Villa would likely have been relegated, he'd have presumably got the LCB spot in the England squad that almost went all the way in the Euros. Those two things would have seen his value rocket and he'd have soon been off to a bigger club.

He could genuinely be an England regular now while playing for one of the bigger sides in the Premier League, on stupid money, made for life.

Instead he's barely played a game since and has dropped a division. I really feel for the bloke.
 
Just watched Jack doing boxing training in Portugal, in the day 3 in Portugal video, with McBurnie and Sharp. What message is this sending? Is he really like the other two - getting up to speed before returning to full training, or is this his farewell trip?

It could be a Ledley King situation but it would mean he wouldn't be regular in the first team. He would be more of a rotation player and hoping he doesn't get injured.
 

At the age of 19 (23rd November 1982) I snapped my posterior cruciate & lateral ligament. I never kicking a ball again, & always take a personal interest when a player suffers a similar injury. Until now the story ends badly. If I was religious, I would have prayed for Dane Whitehouse & Morgs. By the way, if anyone ever doubted how hard Morgan was, he walked off the pitch with his injury, whereas, I screamed like a baby & still have never experienced a pain like it. Following 10 operations, I had a prosthetic knee in my late 40's.
I'm convinced JOC is going to be the one that breaks the bad run. If he does, I hope he gets the biggest cheer Bramall Lane has ever given to an individual player.

Is there any chance of him coming back or is he just batting out his contract and then he'll retire?

If that's the prognosis then why not both sides acknowledge that and pay him up.

None of this is to his detriment and it allows him to bring forward whatever his future plans may be. Don't see the benefit of him having a glorified gym membership for 12 months that denies him moving on.

Or the fact they haven't gone down that route, does that mean there is still some hope?

Seems unlikely, given his state, that he'll find anywhere better to rehab, and I imagine the club are doing him the service of letting him rehab here until his contract is up

If he even makes it back to football, he'll never be the same again, I doubt he plays another minute for us, as sad as it is I wish people would let go of this pipe dream of him returning and being good

A young Billy Sharp dreaming of scoring goals in front of the kop, fans dreaming of seeing us get to the Premier League, finishing 9th, dreaming of us beating those red bastards at Old Trafford, dreaming that we'll sign a promising young International defender for actual money...they were all pipe dreams at one point.

Yes, JoC might be finished as a footballer. But I, for one, am not ready to stop believing in him yet 🎩

You can keep believing but that doesn’t change the fact he’ll never be what you want him to be again

Excellent, I never knew we had a member of the club's medical staff on the forum!

While you're here, any idea when Rhian, Bogle, Billy or Doyle will be back?
