Im arguing with a pig about Wilders signings in all the different spells, although I’m not going to admit it to a pig, even the most red and white tinted wilder fan boy has to admit for every David Mcgoldrick there’s been a Kean Bryan. Anyway while going through transfers in and out I’ve noticed quite a few names and thought “oh ah, I remember him” quickly followed by “I wonder where he is now” and then the odd name I’ve thought “who the f*** is he, can’t remember him”
Admittedly a lot of these were very young when we signed them.

So, give me your memories on some of these or feel free to add your own names from any era.

So, what happened to

Reece brown - signed by Wilder from Bury on a free? I can’t remember him !

Jake Young - signed from Guiseley, again never heard of him

Harry Shepperd- signed from tadcaster, never heard of him

Reece York - signed from Fulham, never heard of him

Nicksoen Gomis - signed Evreux FC 27 a French team, I remember the name Gomis but have no recollection of him playing, I’ve never heard of the French team either !

Zak Brunt - signed from Matlock. I do remember this kid, my mates lad used to lay for the academy and I went to watch him a few times, Zak stood out and had a few loans but it never worked out for him at a top level, I’m always wary of people getting giddy about academy players, they can shine like a diamond against players their own age but put them up against a 33 year old experienced central midfielder and they look well out of their depth a lot of the time. He’s at Boreham wood now and is still only 24 so good luck to him and hopefully he’ll be in the EFL soon

Leo Gaxha - Irish kid, never played first team now back in Ireland for Dundalk.

Michael Verrips - didn’t he spill the ball into his own net or something daft like that in his only appearance for us? He’s now playing for a club called FC Dender in Belgium in their top flight after the club won back to back promotions. He’s not first choice but has played 44 times for them in the past 3 seasons. I’m assuming he played a part in one of the promotions and then got pushed out of being first choice. That’s just an assumption though.

Ashton Hall - signed from Matlock, now plays for Rushall Olympic. Again a young un, now 25.

Kacper Lopata - Never made the first team, we were in the premier league at the time, never got his chance. He went to Southend and I’m pretty sure Roy did a loan update “view from” and they raved about him. He’s at Barnsley but hasn’t played much for them in three years and has had numerous loans. i remember a lot of noise around this kid

Ismaila Coulibaly - we all remember the noise around this kid, signed from Norwegian side Sarpsborg who Brian Deane used to manage and we loaned him to Beerschot (wasn’t it something to do with Brexit and youth players? now playing for Austrian side LASK who have regularly been playing European football for 7/8 years now. Hopefully he will shine through.

All part of the flotsam and jetsam of football.

For those named there'll be thousands like them , at least they'll always be able to say
" I was once signed by ....." which is closer than most of us get .

Listening to the latest 4 Blades In the Pub podcast about Wilder's transfer dealings make you realise how many players wilder gets through to find these gems. In totality his history is really poor (with our without money to spend), the ones that worked have become legends though.

9 of those listed were signings for the development teams.

Verrips wasn't a terrible keeper, has an ok record in Dutch and Belgian footy. Has massive fingers.

Young/Sheppeard/Gomis/Hall/Gaxha/York/Lopata were all development signings who were 16-18 when they joined. Lopata is (I think) the only one who played for the first team.

Verrips joined under Wilder in 2020 but only played once: under Jokanović against West Brom where he was hung out to dry by an awful defensive performance (0-4).

Brown was (and is) Wes Brown's younger brother and joined on a short term deal to give us some depth at the start of the L1 promotion campaign. He only played twice for us in the league (came on in the 89th minute against both Bristol R (1-0) and Shrewsbury (3-0)) and started the three cup matches in his time here (FLT vs Walsall & Grimsby; FA cup vs Bolton)

Coulibaly was signed in 2020 from Sarpsborg (Brian Deane links) but immediately sent on a 3 year loan to Beerschot. There were links to AC Milan at one stage but obviously nothing came of that. He was brought over to United at the start of the 2022/23 season but only ever really played in the cups. He's best remembered for an awful miss against Spurs in the 5th round (1-0). Left us permanently for LASK Linz in Jan 2024 after a loan spell in Sweden with AIK.

Who was the 26 year old signed from non league? Came off the bench and scored 2 against Man United then we never saw him again?

Shocking recruitment.

Didnt Coulibaly have a really bad knee injury which ended Milan’s interest?

Never really got over the death of his brother apparently. Also very badly advised by his old man.

for every David Mcgoldrick there’s been a Kean Bryan........ ask your mate who last scored a goal at Old Trafford for them .. Even Kean Bryan did for us :-)

Also a certain Mr Burke… it bought a new meaning to the phrase “Man U haven’t been the same since fergie left”

From what I remember, Lopata was recalled from a loan at Southend when we were short of CB cover. He then did a bit of a flounce because he thought he was good enough to start, and was sold to Southend permanently. Left there after a dispute over unpaid wages, finishing up at Woking. Barnsley signed him from there.

That rings a bell now.
