The club are unlikely to give him a new deal with the current financial situation. If he's not close to any kind of training by the summer, even a week to week contract is unlikely. That may sound heartless but the reality is a player who has been out for two seasons with all the medical advances is unlikely to play at a good level again.

Sad, sad story but I'll be more surprised now if he plays League football again that not. Love him to prove me wrong but it might have to be down the leagues and elsewhere.

I think it's unlikely considering the wage bill and losses after covid we even retain faves like Didz and Bash (can see Billy getting a year even on a reduced wage) so O' Connell won't be retained I doubt considering his situation.

Usually in these situations clubs extend the contract to give the player more time to get fit.
Jack will obviously have a thorough check by a specialist! that will be the key to any extention to the time he is given.
He wouldn't be the 1st player to be written off and make it back within an extention period.
The prognosis from a specialist is key ! Hopefully that would be favourable .
 
When I had my knee op last year the surgeon told me that I'd had a similar injury to JoC, said that his partner worked at the club in the medical team. That was to try and put in perspective how hard my recovery would be. ACL was absolutely gone and meniscus was pretty badly torn too.

Nearly 12months on now and I still can't run for more than a couple of minutes, can't pivot on my left leg, can't land a jump etc.

But I'm not a professional athlete and I don't have millions of pounds worth of facilities and treatment available so who knows.

All I know is I'd absolutely love to see him back in a Blades shirt!

Echoes of the Whitehouse aftermath. He tried for so long to get back, we never heard much about how his recovery was going, until about 3 years later when he announced his retirement

Point being 18months to 2 years are not unheard for time scales for recovery

So sad, he’s arguably our best player and ironic how he didn’t get any injuries and was a mainstay in the team, love him to bits and he’ll always be a blades legend non matter what

paul Gascoigne was injured in may 91 and returned for Lazio in sept 82 roughly a year and 5 months
so it's only just reaching normal recovery area

Wasnt he was given a squad number in the millennium season? Then that season he retired

Probably because he’s in the rehabilitation stage and they easing him back slowly this time to give him every chance of a successful recovery, media coverage will put pressure on the player .
It’s probably in the player / clubs best interest to keep his recovery low key as he’s had a serious injury & cross our fingers all goes well ⚔️
