How many in here made it 46/46?

Off topic, but I've mentioned elsewhere, the growing guilt of brainwashing son into supporting Blades when he was born in Brighton and his first bedroom was in Hove. Feel like he could have quite a happy life supporting them....!

But back on topic, when he's old enough I plan to drive us up to matches for the joy of the match/bonding experience. So it's not all guilt.

Plus I can ensure he always has Blades match access at home. Whereas BHA I'm not as likely to go out of my way/mould plans around!
The 90 mins or so journey with the kids to the match has indeed been wonderful bonding time for me. Bristol City last month was the first time my daughter took on driving duties….across Winnat and Snake Passes - as much of a thrill ride as the game….!

Yeah, I know Cheesebord. I'll bet you were sat there all ready in your lippy, naked and shaved apart from a cowboy hat, feather boa, chaps and one of those nameless objects you blow into that unfurls and goes 'toot!' with a vodka martini and a family pack of Revels cheering on Croatia.

Y'know, you shouldn't comment on it unless you were actually at the semi finals similarly attired ...

Still hurting?

Only missed the Wrexham replay due to a night in Hossie watched a couple of games over in Lanzarote while on my hols. I no longer do away games but there is always a stream to be found to take care of those. Got my ST for next season but it might be more hassle the way they move KO times in the Prem and me moving out of Sheffield.

Are you getting Eurovision mixed up with your Navy rec room?

Was lucky enough to go to Australia over Christmas and New Year staying with relatives and watched 5 or 6 games in the middle of the night or v early morning, sometimes with a 6 yr old (Scottish/American) year old nephew who’d sneak out of bed. ‘Hey man I want to see that Jackie Long Throw’ and both of us going very silently apeshit when we inevitably scored the winner. As good as being at BDTBL? Certainly different. Difficult to measure enjoyment int’it?

Some football fans have obsessive & completist character traits. They have to have them all. Shirts. Programmes. Ticket stubs. Teamsheets. Games. You see the same traits in some music fans. I do not know how unusual that is. But, among the limited number of United fans I know, it is quite common. That is the circle I am in. I don't go to all the games. Never have. But, I travel to some away games on a privately organised supporters coach.

I'd estimate that at least half (say two dozen) fans on the coach would routinely, matter of factly, quietly, with no trumpets, go to every game in a season, all competitions, all venues. I know there are other privately organised away coaches. And my feeling is many of their customers also have the same simple organised completist approach to attending every game.

Yes, many of them will keep lists. Games attended. Beers drunk. Grounds ticked. That is part of their obsessive make up.

I'm trying to make the point that attending 46/46 (or similar) is not always a Bigger Blade Swinging Contest. For some people it's simply - what they do. They don't "look down" on people who can't attend games. And, they don't expect recognition from others. It's just - what they do.

I'll go even further. Because I know pommpey can and will defend himself vigorously if I say the wrong thing.

(remembering I don't go to every game myself)

I hope I don't look down on 1 out of 46ers. But, I do look incredulously at them. With bewilderment. Because - that's not my thing. Watching and analysing games on streams. I wouldn't enjoy that, at all. So, there is a little knee jerk - fuck me, how could anyone enjoy that.

Before a gathering of empathy...

Well if that's what they enjoy, then that's up to them, good luck....

But, I'm still incredulous & bewildered - but not judgemental.

We probably have around 1,200 to 1,500 in the top bracket of Loyalty points - over 70K.
I'd say to accumulate that, they'll be there >90% of the games.

To some people it's their life. Their family calendar will be planned AROUND games and not the other way; seeing what games drop into available slots.

The only home game I missed this season was against Reading due to Covid, I had bought tickets for the away game at Luton but missed the game due to the illness. The away games I went to were Boro, Cardiff (new ground for me), Millers, Norwich, Huddersfield and Birmingham so 28/46 for me.
What is hard to figure out is why (for me at least) when possible, it's so much better to go to the games, especially away games, rather watch in "comfort" and "convenience"?

Norwich away for instance; a nightmare to get to and from, but probably my best day out of the season.

Pilgrimage?

I agree. The Premier League fixture #BigNews for the Carrier Bag Firm is

"The schedule also provides for a return of the mid-season player break, which will take place between 13-20 January."

Thus, alongside the International Breaks, allowing a useful planning window for "the other life".

Although many are mithering that United may play warm weather friendlies, which they wouldn't want to miss.

This, exactly. Sad I know, but a lot easier when you go as a couple, otherwise it would just be too selfish, or you don't like each other very much. For many years holidays were always arranged when United weren't playing, weddings and parties turned down as we were playing. Even daughters weddings organised out of season. It became an obsession. I once went eight years not missing a home game. That takes some doing I can tell you. But funnily enough, once I'd missed a game, car broke down on the way there and even though I left the car and tried to get to the game by other means I didn't make it, it no longer mattered.
I'm now older and wiser and perhaps just don't care as much. Football has changed, supporting has changed. I still love it, but more like a comfy pair of old slippers I don't want to throw out. I just don't get the same butterflies on match day. Away days are very different, sadly. They used to be so much fun, so much fun. Or am j just a miserable old bugger now?

I know a few people (United fans and fans of other clubs) who passed ridiculous milestones. One Thousand consecutive home and away games attended or similar. Some "dealt with it" by just not turning up for a random subsequent match, no excuse. In order to break their streak so that it didn't become an insane quest for two thousand or similar.

The Birmingham City commentary yesterday was fucking annoying. He wasn't anywhere near the Hal/Nick levels of balanced, controlled narrative. He basically stUCTUred HIS sentences in BURSTS of high enerGY with SHOUTY bits and then quiet BITS with SYLLables at different VOLUMES. When Brum broke out in the first half with Khadra as well, I thought he was gonna shit a few conkers, lace them up and go best of three hits, he was so animated. It must have been some shit season at St Andrews.

But on the Firestick you either have the SUTV matchday commentator assisted by Mogadon Gage or the affable Sarbs with the colour balance making you think the floodlights have partially failed and the crowd sound like it's in Oyl in t'Roeerd or to have the opposing teams' iFollow which could be any daft cunt who fancies himself with a microphone accompanied by a 'fuck me, is he still alive?' ex-player mumbling missives about 'back when we were in the First Division' and the like. And they barely talk about United and say 'Endeeyai' and 'Achmedozich' and 'McBoozer'

pommpey
I will not miss the SUFC colouring, Gage or most of all the appalling sound quality! Christ I know I'm lucky to be able to stream all the matches but sometimes the standard was enough to make you wish for the days of just staring at ceefax "live scores" page.

Thanks for bringing some understanding and some loveliness to the thread!

No they aren't. When players play well, they get praise. Good marks. When have I criticised McAtee, Doyle, Anel or NDaiye? Go back and have a look. Or is it 'just what you want to read' over 'what is actually stated'. I think you have problems with reading. There are books and help online with that stuff.

'Bullying'? And 'innocent posts'? Is Silent paying you for this shite?

Feller, you are super tough and clearly one not to be messed with, no siree.

Just scroll past, eh? I'm not worth it, and neither are you.

Haha yes Silent has set up a standing order and I’m his Forum bodyguard.

I’m not saying I’m tough, I’ll just weigh in when someone is chucking their weight around for no reason. It’d be the same if someone did it to you. Happy to leave it at that, we’ve both made our point.

Disagree. I actually prefer watching away games at home on TV. No travelling to games. No aggro from entitled Blades. No queuing for beer or the bogs. Night matches mean I can put my son to bed and the elation when we win is no different. Went to a couple of away games this year doubt I’ll be rushing to go to another.
Does this make me less of a Blade?

I think we should join hands across the great divide and inclusively celebrate our difference and diversity.

FFS there has been some insecurities exposed and nerves touched in this thread. It's like the football world has been turned upside down and now you are a leper if you actually attend games and dare to talk about it!

Pre internet and endless TV / streams of matches the only way to see a game was to actually go. Quite rightly I reckon, back then I used to take the piss out of the folk in the pub slagging off the Blades cos their mate had told them they played shit, or they'd read in the paper so and so had a bad game.

But it's different now, of course people can have a perfectly valid opinion/analysis of the game if they've watched the whole match on TV. But what's wrong with people who actually attend talking about games they've been to?

FWIW I'm a full time home attender - season ticket holder since 1978 (with 10 of those years working and living away from Sheffield and often out of the country) I rarely miss a home game now. Away however, I'm very much a part-timer these days - get to about a third to half of them. 34/46 for me this season. The reason for this is not money or time ...... I just can't be arsed sometimes in my old age - especially with mid distance games. I'd much rather take a longer away game in and go on the piss over night.... or a short hop somewhere and get back in plenty of time for beers here. I have no problems at all with the folk who go to every away game. I take my hat off to them in fact, good on em!

Only missed the Boro home game as I was on holiday. Season ticket holder since 1991 fwiw. I do usually miss two or three home games a season in recent years due to holidays tbf.

Only managed 3 away games this term which is my lowest for quite some time. Maybe ever. I've found other ways, namely fishing and golf, to keep me entertained every other week. I have stopped enjoying them a bit but hope to get that number up a bit more next season. I've done about 70 of the 92 grounds so the element of ticking them off has been pretty irrelevant this year.

I only made two u18 and a solitary u23 game. If they stopped fucking about with the venues I'd have managed a few more.
