£3m is the figure been touted around. Tough one.... is £3m the magical number Clough was waiting for to let him go and allow us to replace and strengthen?

At £3m I think we should let him go, it would allow us to bring in a few quality players that might be out of our reach currently. From watching Mcgahey he reminded me of Maguire when he first came on to the scene, looked to me a great long term replacement for Maguire.

If they can justify £11m for McCormack, then Harry is worth at least £5-6m

McCormack doesn't play for Sheffield United. If he did we wouldn't have got a quarter of the £11 million fee.
The board would have w@nked itself stupid as soon as the fee got to £2 million, then they'd have chucked in a promising youngster for free for good measure to make sure the deal went through. Other clubs know this and that's why these sorts of figures are never bandied around when it comes to buying our players.

They know that £2 million is the maximum they will have to pay for our very very very best players
They know that £1 million will secure the services of a good or promising player
They know that f@ck all will secure the services of anybody else

It's the market that Sheffield United play in.........................1980's throwbacks.

although i would be sad to see him go, 3 million is very reasonable when he is out of contract next year and it'll be more than we will get at any tribunal/compensation

I don't think that's enough from a Prem club - you have to go up an order of magnitude on the potential fee from a Champ club.

they aren't a premier league club anymore and besides 3million + add ons should really be considered

Oops - they've still got parachute payments so the same applies!

I can't believe that both Hull and Wolves reportedly offered £1.5m + add ons and here comes along Fulham to double the bid!

More likely scenario for me would be that Fulham have hit the £2m mark and with add ons possibly taking the deal up to £3m

However which way you look at it, if there's any truth in Fulham bidding, it will be getting closer to the club and Clough's valuation

Not a chance we get 3m, however if we get an amount which will allow us to bring back Coady, Brayford and (insert striker) I am all in.

They all played the majority of their United career in divisions above this. Harry had about 10 games at most in the division above.

Walker played 5 games for us before he was sold.
Naughton had 1 season in the championship.
Matt Lowton played 44 League 1 games and 34 Championship games.

I'll give you Jagielka

I agree but we probably don't need Coady now. Brayford & [a striker] will do me

I think we do need Coady. We can ditch McGinn and Doyle. Could you imagine that we would have Basham, Wallace, Coady, Scougs and Baxter in that midfield 3 (2 +1 ahead).

.

Go on then...name at least 3 players in each category where we have sold our best players for under £2million and our best promising ones for under £1million. The only caveats being they have to worth over the amounts you have quoted. (

We've done this before but players who were sold for less than they were worth or would later be worth:-

Walker, Lowton, Quinn, McDonald, Sharp, Jagielka, Britton, Kenny, Kelly, Derry, Dellas, Mendonca, Beagrie, Marsden, Cockerill, Edwards

Those that fit into your categories:-

1) Sharp, Dellas, Lowton (if we sold for £750K as reported by Villa).

2) Quinn, McDonald, Britton, Kenny, Kelly

Bale, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Dyer... I wonder if Southampton fans have the same doom and gloom surrounding past sales that have gone on to be worth more than they were sold for.

That's not what jjblade was saying thou. He was being specific with transfer fees

As for the list above,I would argue that we got good prices for Walker, Lowton, Sharp,Kenny, Derry, Beagrie, Marsden, Cockerill. The argument is whether we should have sold them . It is also difficult to know at the time how much a player will be worth in furture especially after the premier league money kicked in and inflated transfer fees.

You could balance things and comment about the money we got for Lee Morris, Tonge, Slew, Mellis, Blackman, Mellis,Beattie,Bent,Tebilly,Paul Williams (remember him !),Agana, Naughton, Killgallon.,Calamity Claude (£3mill !!),Hulse and Bromby Again the debate is whether all of these should have been sold at the time

We didn't have much choice with Jags or KMac as we had to put a clause in or they wouldn't have signed new contracts. Quinn is a strange one as no one wanted to buy him due to his wages and we wanted him off the books for the same reason. Under the new regime we probably wouldn't have let him go.

There was an option in Dellas's contract so he could leave. Kelly and Kenny were not worth over £1mill,Sharp flattered to deceive with us and wasn't worth over £2mill. No one seems to be sure how much we got for Lowton and Britton and Kmac is certainly not worth over £1million despite the hype.

Again as I mentioned when this was discussed previously. All clubs will undersell players from time to time. 16 players in 35 years is probably no more or less than every other club.

The challenge was set to name players who we sold for less than £1-2M who are/were worth more than that.
United entering into stupid, detrimental clauses is not a valid reason for excluding them from the list (i.e. Dellas, Kenny).

Valuations for players will vary but we sold Sharp for less than £100K the first time (good price?) and bought him back for £2M.
Cockerill, Derry, Beagrie and Marsden all had long, successful careers in the top flight after we sold them for relative peanuts (good prices?).
No way would Wolves sell McDonald for less than £1M. Ergo, he's worth more than £1M.

Of course it is. They wouldn't have signed contracts for us otherwise

1) I'm struggling to see the caveat about contract clauses in the original challenge you set.

2) Kenny was a disgraced "drug cheat" banned from all football and Dellas was a total unknown from Greece given a chance to make his name. United really shouldn't have been held over a barrel in those contract negotiations.

Totally agree. I hope this new board has a different mindset now

Whatever they get for him we will see if things have changed. In the past players have been sold with only a portion reinvested in improving the squad. The portion spent on average replacement players weakening the squad further

Well he's not left yet. He has just been in Butlers from about 8 and was still there at just turned 10 when I left.
