Flat atmosphere on the Kop

If we're looking for a proper comparison and barometer, let's take Wolves last season.

They were in a good position like us, only it was less of a surprise for them. Molineux was a fortress. It was very loud, the best I've witnessed since being back in this division. There's no reason we shouldn't be buzzing like they were. We've also had a longer absence from the PL.

Our Kop is shitter than theirs but that alone doesn't account for the difference. Our support now should be very similar to what theirs was.
football atmospheres can't be simulated or manufactured, it's either there or it isn't. In my experience if going to places like anfield and old Trafford when they are challenging for the league title against little old Sheffield United the place is like a fucking morgue

You're banging your head against a wall here Ricky most people who go to football don't go to enjoy it they do.it to shout abuse or advice at successful, attractive athletes

When I last had a season ticket it was gangway E and tbh I thought it was good and generally whenever I get back I stand there.
I think the back of most gangways are vocal but the chants do not spread or do not spread in time with each other to produce any volume.
They all think they are the loud section but reality is there barely heard a few blocks along.
Best solution would be to have all those in one gangway but sadly I get the impression that most want to be at the back like a school kid at the back of a bus.

Yeah, by the time one gangway's cottoned on to another's chant, it's over. It's not an ideal setup. The vocal types would go to the same area if they had the opportunity but unfortunately they never will, because season tickets.

For chants to spread properly, the E/F block need to wake up to connect the end to the middle. Not a full solution but it would improve things.

The Kop corner is the prime real estate to get it going, move the family’s to John Street and make that the “vocal” area. It’s ideal for a safe standing area as well.

It has to be at the Kop end in my opinion, the Bramall Lane end is regarded as the “away end” by too many to make that option viable.

Every time I saw their games it was very loud.

Our game there was a comfortable win for them but it was still very impressive support wise.

And generally being worse than others has never been my angle. I'm not saying we are. I'm saying we could, and should be better than we are.

That's fair enough but I'm sure every club's fans will say the same quite often.

Not sure of your age but I loved the old West Terrace which was bouncing in the late 80s early 90s. That said there were still plenty of flat atmospheres during our promotion in 1990 and subsequent top flight years. This at a time when it was more conducive to better atmospheres.

I appreciate you put the effort in last season but I'm not sure people moaning every time the atmosphere isn't great achieves much. It's always been the same in my time.

Do yourself a favour, go to old Trafford, go to anfield got the bernabaeu and the nou camp

You will find that most football grounds are pretty quiet outside the big games

Or go and watch ice hockey or the darts

Why should he do that?

He tried over a fair period but much of the promised support never arrived. As far as I’m aware the effort was single handed and all others had to do was get a ticket and show up.

It’s not as if Ricky hasn’t gone on about it for a long time.

The idea wasn’t for me but then I didn’t rail about lack of atmosphere and then not turn up.

I don’t want a Palace set up singing cheesy pop songs etc, but that’s not he wanted to do in the BLUT, just get like minded people together.

The atmosphere seems more important to.him than the action on the pitch and he can't seem to accept that it isn't always electric, not just at the lane but anywhere in the world
I.wasnt seriously suggesting fucking the blades off to go elsewhere but it would be nice to not read about how shit we are as fans in every thread

It's always been the same in my time.

I can’t back this up with anything other than my memory of the games I attended, but I thought the atmosphere was less flat generally speaking in the 05/06 promotion season. If our form continues though we could end up in a similar fight for 2nd where it will feel more like every single win is vital. It is of course vital right now, but I get the sense that this is very difficult to instill in fans with so many games still left. That’s not an excuse for people, just my sense of it. We might, come April, have a Hull 2006 equivalent game and might raise the atmosphere accordingly and comparably.

I will hold my hands up, I should sing more but to be honest I spent the whole 90 minutes nervously thinking it would be typical of us to concede to what I thought was the worst team to visit the Lane this season. Add in for varying reasons I haven't seen us win "live" since the Wigan at home match you may have to forgive me!!

You're not allowed to be nervous
Sing you barsterd

The trouble is, if half the people who complain about the shit atmosphere did anything about it themselves, it would be a great atmosphere. :)

The lack of atmosphere is even more cringeworthy that the 5,000 who are more worried about a queue in traffic than the last 5 minutes of the match.

Has anybody ever escaped the traffic by leaving 5 minutes early anyway

the lads at the top of gangway A were trying on Saturday but everytime they got it going the larger group over on gangway E seemed to want to start a different chant rather than join in with them. Seemed a bit strange to me on Gangway B.

The best atmospheres this season were against Derby and Blackburn.

In the Derby game it was generated by the referee's inept decisions. Ignoring the penalty appeal on McGoldrick, Derby immediately equalising and Frank Lampard losing his rag on the touchline.

In the Blackburn game it was the Basham sending off and once again a very poor referee.

Yesterday the best atmosphere (in the 81st minute) was the Jack O'Connell incidents. He inspired the crowd.

We need something to happen that will unite us all.

I wouldn't mind seeing Madine coming on and stirring things up so that we create a real battling atmosphere, a proper Sheffield United atmosphere as Chris Wilder referred to it.

Let's make it uncomfortable for the opposition.

Last season we did 'nice' for far too long.

I've noticed players shithousing does seem to generate a better atmosphere

The atmosphere is being killed off in most English stadiums
Local councils health and safety and the police are deliberately killing it off
Every season it gets worse, and in a few years time it will be illegal to stand up when we score

This will come eventually, because these prick that make the rules and regulate will absolutely not stop, ever.

When they've got everybody sat in silence like stuffed dummies they will continue their relentless attack until nobody wants to go to football anymore

Don't think the pre match Maggie Mays light rock and 70's pop helps anyone get going either. It's like being at a wedding reception.

I don't think it's worse than most, but you can sense when it's quieter than it should be. It gives you that slight embarrassment, like when you try to squeeze a fart out quietly when you're watching the TV with the family but it comes out like a tractor engine being turned over.

I'm not sure if it veers into the sort of cheerleader area but something a bit less sedate from GSinc maybe, just to get people going, it's like it's a sin to directly mention that the club would appreciate it if we were loud. When Wilder, Deano and Bill have been talking about it lately it was very low key, like they were talking about something taboo. Could go down the Wolves route and get the pyros out for the last few home games haha

Players should also gesticulate at the crowd more to get a response, and Wilder to the South if it's not quite working. I think deep down we want to be louder but there's a block, partly that's because of people isolated from other people, but an invitation to step up and help might wake people up.

Obviously it's reactive, but it's rare the team gives us nothing to react too.

That Paddy Power advert with the seat belts.....

Fans should do more to fight all this shit. But that won't happen (in this country). Because by the time it's extreme enough to be what would now be considered the tipping point, the identity of football fans will have changed to the extent that they won't even be bothered.

They're just stringing us along now with this 'safe standing' nonsense, in the hope that in 10-20 years time the desire for it will be gone. Very clever.

The atmosphere in 2000 - 2002 was brilliant but one or two had to take it too far.
It gave all the authorities the ammunition they needed to kill it stone dead
Its never recovered since

Plus we've now got people coming to watch us who would deliberately use the excuse that somebody stood up in front of them to start a fight

Blade fighting Blade doesn't matter to these morons as long as they can fight with somebody

Out of interest, which stand are you on and is it vocal? Me I'm on the Kop and sing regardless, even if people around me aren't.
Try it in the BL upper tier.
Some mildly interested spectators will turn round, look, turn back, eventually whispering something to whoever they are with.

I'm completely with you on this, Ricky. Sure, the atmosphere at Bramall Lane might be no worse than others. But why should we settle for that? Our players have specifically said how the recent atmospheres have helped. Why should there be snark or cynicism aimed at someone suggesting that we should try and make sure all of our games are like this? We're coming into one of the most important periods for our club in the last decade, at least.

I wish I could've helped when you made your big push to solve it, Ricky. I was a forum rookie and not really contributing much but I'm a Londoner and mostly do games in the south in any case. But take this as a message of support to say you're not alone in thinking it. Wilder, the players and the rest of the staff are doing their bit, we could do ours.

Sounds visually appealing at least !! :p

Mind you ….. its just our bloody luck that some PC twat from the communist leftie Council would demand that we have butch blokes in budgie smugglers instead :(:(

UTB & FTP

Well if they do we can jostle, abuse and intimidate them, in true nasty hard-right fashion...
