Lots of Ifs and Buts = The Unknown?

I know it’s off season, and we’re not tied to anyone yet other than rumour, but I can’t help noticing how a LOT of hope for next season seems to be heavily caveated around ifs and buts regarding a number of players and signings.

Reading through the forum, especially rumoured targets, the phrases If and But tend to appear a lot, and it’s made me wonder about how that generally equates to everyone’s outlook for the season.

Some examples (not verbatim):

If Jairo can play more than 60 minutes
If Arblaster finds form
If Burrows is first choice
If Phillips can replicate prior form
But that depends on X and Y
But we’d need to play 2 up top

And so on.

It’s the level of uncertainty that I’m highlighting here, and it’s making me nervous for the season coming, despite the unknowns.

All that’s going through my mind is like building an acca, and seeing the odds stack up the more factors you add in.

Anyone else feeling like this? That it’s a risk and unknown?

I feel like the more factors we add in, the less chance we have of more coming off.

Tough one to call. IF we (surprisingly) don't sell Hamer, we've got a chance of a good season... IF(!) we get a couple of quality centre backs and another good no9.

IF we do sell Hamer, without a very good creative AM/LW to replace him... The whole season could be a disaster. i.e. Totally reliant on O'Hare, teenage loanee and a new LW to do the business over 46 matches.

Should also throw in an IF Michael Cooper is good/bad as well...

You missed out Sell Cannon / Cannon will finish the season top scorer.

Personally I think there’s too many variables. We’re hoping absolutely everything goes right, all the signings click and stop fully fit for 40 games and we start playing with a fluidity we haven’t for the last 2 seasons.

I’m expecting a real Jekyll & Hyde season, we’ll go from looking fantastic to not knowing how to string two passes together. We’ll have a 4 week spell where we look like we’re on a charge before we tinker with the team and it falls away.

if the rumoured transfers all come off we’ll have a really strong squad, I just don’t see them all on the pitch at the same time for more than a dozen games.

Recruitment-wise, last season is living long in the memory of being nothing short of a disaster, with Wilder coming back and bringing Jairo and Bamford in to drag us out of the mess we should never have found ourselves in to begin with.

Wilder's copybook certainly isn't clean but it's cleaner than Selles, Hoyland and James Bord who, in the space of a couple of months, frittered money away that's going to take a long time to get back, short of a parachute-less run at promotion, some positive football and some astute signings to make it happen.

We're still having to fund most of last season's mess which means we can't fund any improvements until we've permanently cleared out some of the rubbish, of which there's plenty who don't stand a hope in hell of ever playing for us week in week out - Chucky, Ukaki, Zatterstrom, RND, Grbic, Shackleton, Matos. No tears would be shed of we lost McGuinness, Cannon, Chong, maybe Campbell and Burrows.

All of these could be binned off tomorrow based on last season's mediocrity and not be missed and be replaced with 4 decent quality footballers. Easier said than done of course.

We're more Dion Dublin clearing out what could be a nice big 5 bedder than Kevin McCloud renovating a castle (but of course that's happening up the road ).

I think im one of the only ones that, despite appreciating hamers obvious technical ability, thinks wed have better shape without him.
