Deluded optimism

Top half?! Fucks sake, we largely have the same line up as the team that finished third last year. Why such a regression?!
Because we were lucky to get so many points last season. We have a new manager and style of football. We'll have a lot of new players. Football isn't some football manager game. It's hard to keep changing things and then be consistent. We might do better but I think we'll lose a few more players and it depends how we replace them.

The level of optimism about United's chances this season, is akin to those at S6 this time last year.

We are miles of it with the current sales and acquisitions.
I’m optimistic.

I will give you this though, whilst Wednesday have been hogging (pun intended 😉) the limelight all summer as they stumble from calamity to calamity, we’ve quietly gone about removing the outfield spine of Wilder’s team!

Over time, Campbell replaced Moore in the pecking order though this time last year, Kieffer had the starting shirt.

Souza was a miss when he was out. Though the reports on Soumaré are encouraging and if we get Iroegbunam, we can’t say we haven’t considered this.

We have brought in Bindon who has always felt more Anel like than anything. I.e. ball playing centre back. But that does leave us needing a Souttar like. I know it’s not a sexy continental signing but it does feel that Joe Worrall is at a bit of a loose end.

Incidentally did anyone clock the spine of the Hull team could soon be directly lifted from ours that finished 9th? Egan-Lundstram-McBurnie.

Could have also said the one that finished 20th as well, of course!

The majority of the division will be still be poor to bang average, that hasn’t changed.

Even if we’re worse than last season, we’ll still be better than the majority in this league.

Is it really that much worse than last season? Barry, Bindon & Soumare are all upgrades, if Ahmedhodzic goes we need an another CB and we probably need a replacement right back (the Korean lad we’ve been liked with).

Who from this line up that we’ve lost (other than Souttar) improves the first 11?
I genuinely think people can't remember how our squad looked at the start of last season. 4 or so weeks to go. Lots will change.

We all know what the play-offs does to us. Ipswich and Southampton have obviously stronger squads than us. Brum have a very decent squad and huge momentum (loads more points than we had when we kicked out of L1 and a much better squad). Coventry and Millwall look to have done good business so far. Norwich, Swansea, Derby, Portsmouth will be stronger. Leicester, despite a points deduction, have some very strong players at this level. Who knows with the focus and money Wrexham have behind them. Likely top half at least.

I do not think this league is weaker this season. I think it's much more competitive.

For the love of God, stop making reasonable comments on here🤣

Yep. Deluded would be to say this division is weaker. There's going to be a few clubs that have been mid table detritus for a few seasons that are standing still that could pretty easily see themselves passed real quickly, with the limited number of teams on parachute money it's going to be a knife fight for playoff spots further up as well and the best chance in years for anyone to get their "lottery ticket"

There’s no expectation this season

I agree, but times can change quickly if you do not take an opportunity. If United hadn't been promoted 2 years ago, we could be in an S6 position now. United need to be promoted this season, otherwise it's a few more years of wilderness football for us, whether you like that or not

Really fucks me off these deluded happy clappers. Are you the same happy clappers that were saying last season, just wait till we have finished the transfer window we'll be promoted. Slagging off those as bed wetters saying we wouldn't and we didn't. Those that said, in our last Premier season, we'll be OK as transfers were good enough to keep us up and despite the bedwetting crew saying we weren't good enough slagging them off. Lo and behold we were embarrassing. Slagging off those, who after our 9th place, were saying we hadn't strengthed enough and again were embarrassing. After being in the prem, finishing 3rd last year, receiving parachute payments, the ambition of finishing mid table as we are 'in transition' is seen as acceptable is frankly embarrassing as is the assumption we are automatic top 6 based on a far weaker squad depth. As are those who think this is acceptable. I admit we don't know what is going on in the background but the evidence so far isn't encouraging (random Bulgarian league, some we've not even seen, loans not permanent so will need replacing). Added to that what is happening with the new training ground? I am eternally optimistic that we will be OK and it will turn out great but so far I agree with London.

The points gap last season suggests there is a lot of ground that needs to be made up. Do I think the division will be better? Maybe, but not to a level where I’m worried.

We’ve currently got a strong team, but we need to sign more players. If the window closes and we’ve not signed anyone else, that’s the time to worry.

I'd suggest the points gap was so big because there were so many poor teams. Points will be harder to come by this season.

We aren't miles off. We are probably 3 players (and an injured Blaster coming back) away from having a squad as strong as we were at the start of last season, with a new coach who seems to be impressing with his focus and work ethic.

We always do some business late. But it will happen.

Upgrades based on what?

I mean they might be but what actually are you basing that opinion on?

Barry has come from Lge 1
Bindon yet to prove himself in the Championship
Soumare a complete unknown quantity in English/championship football

I hope you are right btw

Interesting point you raise there

All the way through this post, I was thinking, "sounds eternally optimistic, this fella"

LondonRoad to you pal 🤣😜

I'm a happy clapper, so not the best person to ask. However, we've lost Souza and Brewster. With the exception of Choudry, all the loan players we had were below par.

We've brought in a couple, including Barry who looks exciting.

We've got a different Manager who should play to our strengths and make the games more enjoyable.

I'm expecting a slow start with mixed results, then I think we will hit the straps in October and start to put some real form together.

Top 6 for me with this squad. A good RB, a decent back up GK and another CB and we will be solid top 6.

Think One will be the player to watch this season.

What makes you think we have "largely" the same line up that finished 3rd mate? 6 loans gone, Souza, Moore and now Anel, as well as Brewster. 10 players down, 3/4(?) in?

Current sales:
Vini Souza - wanted to leave, got his wish
Miguel Freckleton - * meh *

Man, you're right. These sales have ruined our season. We've no chance of promotion now that we've sold these two.

Oh wait, we've replaced Souza with Soumaré, but let's write him off before he's even kicked a ball. Crap signing anyway. Obviously.

Thats what some said this time last year. 🤣

.I didn't, I was laughing at the S6 mob who thought they would be ok with little or no substance. Saying they would finish above us, do the double over us and that we had a manager who was out of his depth and old fashioned ..
