Maybe, but bottom of the league, relegated Southampton went all the way to the Semi finals of the league cup last season.

I'm not going to say that progressing in the league cup will definitely have an adverse effect of giving us an extra drive to achieve league survival but who's to say it can't, an odd point for me to make I know after I've just mentioned that about Southampton finishing bottom despite their good cup run.
