Adams, who scored 12 goals in 41 appearances for Sheffield United last term, features on the wanted-list of at least one unnamed top-flight club while Championship teams Wigan Athletic and Huddersfield Town are also thought to be monitoring his situation at Bramall Lane.
United manager Chris Wilder is plotting a major overhaul of the playing staff he inherited from Nigel Adkins seven weeks ago after releasing 10 and transfer listing another seven members of the squad which finished 11th in the League One table under his predecessor.
Although United have no plans to part company with Adams, they have a plethora of options in attack and could recruit a targetman during this summer’s window.
Adams, previously of Ilkeston, returned to pre-season training with United this week. Speaking before Monday’s session, Wilder made no reference to the teenager’s future but did confirm negotiations with “a couple” of potential acquisitions have reached an advanced stage.
“We’re looking to ramp things up over the next seven to 10 days,” Wilder said. “We’re pretty close on one or two things and only want the right people.
“We’d rather do it like that, focus on individuals with the right characters and the right attitudes than rush into something and get it wrong. I think that’s important. Everybody here agrees on that.”
Wilder, who has also outlined plans to “get more” out of United’s existing players, added: “Everybody can improve. There’s talent here and, arguably, we must look to exploit that better.
“That’s not a comment on what’s gone before or what anybody else here has done. It’s not a criticism. Just a statement about what we are trying to do and want to do."
