NOooooooooooooo
Bloody NOOOOOOOOOOO!

THE BEST BLADES RELATED POD / NEWS EVER.

Gutted.
Bereft
Heartbroken

Allus look forrad to a new Bladespod. Followed it right from the start. In fact I was trying to get Jay introduced to some analytics for the Millers in the early days via some connections.
Then Andrew Roygbiv came in after initially using this forum to promote his views from (or did you also do that on Bladesreunited?) and did a superb job replacing Jay.

Urged Beans never to change the title music as it was synonymous with the pod.

I wish you all the best Ben. I have absolutely loved your pod for the clean and measured and fun way you have gone about it.

As someone who doesn’t live in Sheffield it’s been a huge connection to the city of my birth and my football team.

Fuckign hell. This is worse than the COH / Selles cluster fuck and the position we are in 🤬

To echo those above, I can say with relative confidence I'll have listened to every episode you've ever put out and it's been an absolute pleasure. The original and by far the best.

Even back when Jay was getting stuck into stats it always felt like a couple of people having a natural and genuine conversation about the Blades... with a bit of intellect chucked in.

It was quality content that managed to completely avoid the gimmicky, showy, 'online' feeling that seems to infect everything else these days. Big reason it resonates with so many I'd imagine.

Don't get me wrong, there were some periods that were tough to take an interest in. The last prem relegation in particular.

Otherwise, you've covered a significant chunk of my favourite era of being a Blade. This pod, along with Shoreham View's and Travelling Blade's vlogs, are synonymous with the Chris Wilder era to me. All part of my weekly ritual when we were in our pomp.

Even now, few things are finer than seeing the new pod notification pop up after a good win, and knowing you'll get to revel in that feeling again for an hour or so on a dull weekday morning. It'll be sorely missed!

Seriously gutted its the end. All the best, and thanks for all your time and effort - 8 years being the cream of the crop is some shift. Something to be very proud of!

I might do something United related in the future but happy to have a break from the idiots at the moment

At least you've found a nice little enjoyable niche where you somehow pull 45 minutes of content out about stuff like chip shop scraps, kicking around empty cans (episode ideas for you), & bedsheets.

And I'm very much here for it.

Sorry to hear this! I'm a relatively new listener, but I need to thank Roygbiv and Beans for playing a big part in getting my interest back.

I'd really felt disconnected from United, pretty much since covid, but last summer I thought I'd give BladesPod a try in a bid to get the bug bag. It worked, I've listened to every pod since and actually enjoyed last season more than I have for years, largely due to the additional bit of interaction.

I hope I can find an alternative that strikes a chord with me in the same way. I'm going to need it, the way things have started!

So sorry to hear this but it's been a he'll of a commitment for you and understandable why you'd want to stop. As others have said, it's been just like listenjng to two friends chatting who over time have become our friends too although we've never met. Personally I found it so therapeutic after a loss to hear your calm, measured chat. I always thought you should be prescribed on the NHS. Thanks for the memories and enjoy your next chapters. Best wishes to you both.

As everyone said, the podcast will be missed! I'll add in that for people like me who live abroad fan content is so helpful and Bladespod has been the only podcast that felt right for me. Nothing over the top, nothing too ramble-y, just well considered opinions from guys trying to see the bigger picture.

Definitely a part of my blades ritual over the years, and I thought it was only right to say thank you for the part you've played in helping me feel a part of the blades journey in recent years (for better and worse)

💖

A staple of runs around the park and commutes for me. I'll miss this podcast badly. Thank you for recording all of these years and especially for some of the specials pumped out during covid lockdown, reflecting on past seasons - the only real footballing thing I could look forward to for a while.

Between this and Tufty Club I had my more 'serious' podcast alongside a silly one. The others trying to be a 'podcast of record', if there is such a thing, never came close to it imo.

Perhaps consider a season review if we go up?

Thank you.

Gutted Beans and Roygbiv

As others have said you've had an amazing run and as much as I'll be gutted i don't have your company on a Wed/Thurs dog walk - I totally get it.

However, I was hoping for one last episode with Blades Analytics before you go over the podcast rainbow, but guess that will have to wait....

Hello S2,

As Scarebus has alluded to above (very quick off the mark there!) - I was hoping to say this after a playoff final win rather than the current mess, but I’ve decided to call time on the podcast. It’s something I’ve been weighing up for a while and, to be honest, it’s an acknowledgement that my heart’s just not in it quite as much as it used to be. Which, if I’m being blunt, you may have noticed at points last season.

I started BladesPod eight years ago, which seems a long time to do anything really. My goal was to be something a little more “considered” than eg Praise or Grumble football phone-in style content, with fairly chill takes rather than clickbaity sensationalism. I hope that BladesPod has lived up to that in the main, but I’m now at a stage of life where United aren’t at the front of my mind anywhere near as much. Rather than put out something a bit rubbish or half-hearted, I think it’s just time to hang up the mic.

I’ve hugely, hugely enjoyed my time recording and putting these podcasts out there, and the (generally!) good-natured feedback they’ve generated, even when it’s a difference of opinion. Above all it’s through this podcast that I’ve made some genuine friendships and met a load of people I don’t believe I’d ever have crossed paths with otherwise. As the pod’s lifetime has overlapped with me becoming a parent – not to mention living through a global pandemic – I can’t overstate how useful it’s been for my own mental health.

I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who’s ever taken the time to record with me – Anna, Dave, Hal, and all the guest fans of other teams who I’ve ever had on, back when I had a bit more enthusiasm. To Jay, without whom I don’t think I’d have carried on going for this long: a man who was my gateway into football analytics as well as giving me the enthusiasm and self-belief that we were doing something worth ours’ and other people’s time. It’s been awesome to see him find an amazing career in the game he devoted so much of his spare time to – one of the hardest-working people I’ve ever encountered.

And of course, a huge thanks to Andrew – someone I’d never met or even spoken to before we recorded an episode together for the first time, and now probably a person I speak to more often than anyone who doesn’t share my surname. An absolute pleasure to record all those episodes with you – six years! – and the one thing that’s made me put off finishing the podcast for the last year or two. A legend of the Lane.

Finally, a thank you to anyone who’s ever listened to the pod or otherwise interacted with me on social media etc. It was only because there appeared to be any audience for this at all that I kept doing it beyond the first amateurish episode. I really do appreciate that that audience continued right up to this day, and I hope you got at least some enjoyment out of the pod during its run.

I’ll still be writing about Sheffield United Women on my newsletter WOMEN OF STEEL (womenofsteel.substack.com), and hopefully will keep writing about the men’s team for the Pinch and anywhere else that will accept a few words from me when they come to mind. But for now, that’s all folks. Thanks again for listening to us.

UTB,

Ben

An episode for the road:

Thanks again. Hugely appreciate anyone who's ever listened or otherwise interacted.

As someone that really enjoyed the original pod when it was yourself and Jay, it was something very new at that time and was during the start of, for me at least, analytics coming into the game for fans. I really appreciated the analysis and found it extremely interesting at a time when the Wilder years were taking off. Sorry to say that i didn't really listen too much after that, the format naturally changed and it just wasnt for me, nothing wrong in what you were doing, I just don't feel engaged with fan podcasts generally. I certainly didn't listen to any other Blades podcasts, but the few times I did listen to this one, yourself and Roy were entertaining and i know you maintained a good following as well as keeping connected with this forum.

Well done for years of producing content and keeping engaged with our fanbase, it can't always have been easy with some of the lows we've had as a club in the usual roller coaster of being a Blade!

Good luck in your next ventures!

Cheers lads,i've listened from the start,so sad to hear it's gone...I usually listened while at work, and took my mind off fighting the traffic up and down the country as it got me an hour or so down the road...Good luck in the future to you both.

Gutted! But totally respect and understand the reasons for calling time. To echo what everyone has said, Bladespod was always an immediate listen for me, been listening since the early days when Wilder got me back into football and living away from Sheffield the pod was a great connection. Have to admit Jay's stats chat did sometimes send me to sleep back when I'd had too many late nights as a student, but I always listened back ;)

Thanks both of you for the time and effort, it was always appreciated! See you around! UTBP

Rather than put out something a bit rubbish or half-hearted
I mean the club are doing that right now so....

In all seriousness, I'll very much miss both iterations of BP, the one with Jay that got me interested in the advance metrics, and the one with Andrew which gave a less metrics, more observational slant on things.

My thanks to all of you.

I might do something United related in the future but happy to have a break from the idiots at the moment

Really hope so, don’t think you and Beans realise just how important you are.
If I saw either of your in a pub I would definitely be buying the drinks as a way to say “thank you”.

I’m quite old and more isolated these days, try to not think about United too much when things are bad.
So it’s great to hear your laughter and ability to turn our poor spell into something quite comical.
What’s the old saying, “if you didn’t laugh then you’d cry”, it really helps when you find snippets of humour regards our demise.

Also you and Beans are so balanced and pretty sensible, able to find negatives and positives.
This should be the norm but these days everything is so exaggerated for effect.
If you read FB or X, anyone would think this is the worse team in our history and we’re currently facing going into the National league.

Quitters. Out by the back door like Wilder no doubt...

...joking aside, Beans along with Roygbiv (& before that Jay) were the standard bearer of all SUFC podcasts. Informative, analytical, therapeutic & above all, always balanced. Found the perfect style between discussing the games/news but without taking it too seriously.

They were always the go-to reaction. A staple of my weekly runs, but also helped me & the wife get to sleep (not as they were boring!). During lockdown they helped when everything felt so disconnected & used to sit in Meersbrook Park with the familiar theme tune cranked up on my headphones as I sat in the sun.

Me & Webding did Tufty Club probably because of listening to BladesPod, but we perhaps went down the daft/off the wall approach as we were never going to emulate your reasoned & mostly spot on reaction to stuff. You will be badly missed in the Blades community.

Glad too we met because of it and then in turn met Roygbiv etc and have built up some good friendships and now meet before most games!
