Sad to hear it's come to an end. I've really enjoyed listening to the pod over the years and have been a regular listener since the very beginning. I've listened to you, Jay and Andrew for so many hours that you almost feel like people I know, rather than complete strangers.

I could tell that there's been a shift over much of the past season in terms of how much enjoyment/enthusiam you've had for United, so probably the best decision, really.

Hopefully gives you more scope to enjoy the football as just a fan, without having to make it such a time commitment.

On an unrelated note, does this mean that Tufty Club is now the Premier Sheffield United Podcast™?

Thanks for the years of Bladespod and all the contributors over those years too.

Wow, nearly a decade, as soon as a new episode was out, win, lose, or draw it was the first thing I would listen to on either a commute or walk.

Revelling in a good win, or more often than not wanting some therapy after another defeat (think covid years and 23/24).

Hopefully there may be a time to pod again (ie a promotion special or 10 nil win v Pigs).

Once more, many thanks to all involved, we were lucky to have it.

Oh no! Really gutted. The original and best United podcast. Always found this to be the most level headed take on all things United and has served as a therapy session on many occasion when the Blades have done something particularly Bladey.
I remember scrambling around for a United podcast during the early Wilder period and then finally stumbling on Beans solo musings before he was joined by Jay the analytics guy (very interesting insights) and later Roygbiv (a very genuine fans’ take and fantastic co-host).
Sad to see this come to an end but glad it’s on your own terms. Thanks for the many, many hours of entertainment and insight (particularly during the long, boring Covid period, when entertaining content was at a premium).
Tufty Club will have to step up and actually talk about the football now Deadbat Webding 👀 Roy should at the very least be taken on loan for the long awaited rock n goals episode.

This is going to leave a huge hole in my Blades related life, best SUFC podcast by far. Been there from the start and always look forward to listening win (for revelling), lose (for therapy) or draw. Thank you Beans and Roygbiv for putting the time in over the last 8 or so years, and I wish you all the best with whatever you choose to do next.

Gutted to see you hanging up the mic. Always a brilliant listen. Balanced, measured and fair throughout.

Looks like I'm not the only one whose bladey routine had a bladespod spot pencilled in.

Thanks for the almost decade of entertainment and verbalising /solidifying the incoherence that is the experience of supporting this wondeful clusterfeck of a club.

All the best (unless of course this an elaborate ploy to get an encore request).

Superb podcast and I'll be hoping for a big comeback one day. Maybe in 3yrs when Selles has us in the Champions League race again.

I'd compare it to an Oasis comeback, but I'd rather go with something more hipster to be honest.

Seriously, will be sorely missed. Literally my no1 podcast on Spotify wrapped every year since it's inception. Not sure praise comes any higher than that.

Ben please stop reading here...
Roygbiv you're better off without him - hit me up if you want to do a spin off with a sexy hipster happy clapper.

Hello S2,

As Scarebus has alluded to above (very quick off the mark there!) - I was hoping to say this after a playoff final win rather than the current mess, but I’ve decided to call time on the podcast. It’s something I’ve been weighing up for a while and, to be honest, it’s an acknowledgement that my heart’s just not in it quite as much as it used to be. Which, if I’m being blunt, you may have noticed at points last season.

I started BladesPod eight years ago, which seems a long time to do anything really. My goal was to be something a little more “considered” than eg Praise or Grumble football phone-in style content, with fairly chill takes rather than clickbaity sensationalism. I hope that BladesPod has lived up to that in the main, but I’m now at a stage of life where United aren’t at the front of my mind anywhere near as much. Rather than put out something a bit rubbish or half-hearted, I think it’s just time to hang up the mic.

I’ve hugely, hugely enjoyed my time recording and putting these podcasts out there, and the (generally!) good-natured feedback they’ve generated, even when it’s a difference of opinion. Above all it’s through this podcast that I’ve made some genuine friendships and met a load of people I don’t believe I’d ever have crossed paths with otherwise. As the pod’s lifetime has overlapped with me becoming a parent – not to mention living through a global pandemic – I can’t overstate how useful it’s been for my own mental health.

I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who’s ever taken the time to record with me – Anna, Dave, Hal, and all the guest fans of other teams who I’ve ever had on, back when I had a bit more enthusiasm. To Jay, without whom I don’t think I’d have carried on going for this long: a man who was my gateway into football analytics as well as giving me the enthusiasm and self-belief that we were doing something worth ours’ and other people’s time. It’s been awesome to see him find an amazing career in the game he devoted so much of his spare time to – one of the hardest-working people I’ve ever encountered.

And of course, a huge thanks to Andrew – someone I’d never met or even spoken to before we recorded an episode together for the first time, and now probably a person I speak to more often than anyone who doesn’t share my surname. An absolute pleasure to record all those episodes with you – six years! – and the one thing that’s made me put off finishing the podcast for the last year or two. A legend of the Lane.

Finally, a thank you to anyone who’s ever listened to the pod or otherwise interacted with me on social media etc. It was only because there appeared to be any audience for this at all that I kept doing it beyond the first amateurish episode. I really do appreciate that that audience continued right up to this day, and I hope you got at least some enjoyment out of the pod during its run.

I’ll still be writing about Sheffield United Women on my newsletter WOMEN OF STEEL (womenofsteel.substack.com), and hopefully will keep writing about the men’s team for the Pinch and anywhere else that will accept a few words from me when they come to mind. But for now, that’s all folks. Thanks again for listening to us.

UTB,

Ben

An episode for the road:

Thanks again. Hugely appreciate anyone who's ever listened or otherwise interacted.

Big thanks for all the podcasts you've put together Ben! I've been listening since the early days when you had Jay on with the analytics and I really got hooked on that and have been a faithful listener since. It was a sad day when Jay went off but I have really loved the energy, fun and nonsense that Andrew brought to the pod! 😁 Loved it when the two of you often went off on a tangent before finally coming back to the matter at hand.

As another exiled Blade I can echo the other comments about the pod being a real connection to what was going on back at home. I will miss it, no doubt.

Take care and all the best for the future. UTB!

I'm as gutted as everyone else. Baldespod was the tock to match day tick. A sensible recap and analysis mid-week that was always looked forward to with relish, even when we'd been done 0-8.

I can offer no better praise than to say that Bladespod was joint top of my favourites list with 'The Rest is History'. To be in the same pantheon as Sandbrook and Holland is the acme of compliments that I can give.

Very many thanks for the hundreds of hours of entertainment you have given me.

I know you do your other podcast Roygbiv but, you considering filling the void this leaves???

I might do something in the future but I'd find it difficult to another one in the manner of Bladespod. It's weirdly difficult trying to talk about a match every week in a way where you weren't just droning on. If I did another United related pod it would be totally different to Bladespod and I imagine 80% of old listeners would hate it like the Arctic Monkeys new stuff

Oh this is sad. Rarely, if ever, missed an episode. Always listened to the very end.
Will miss you guys coming in my ears.

Hopefully you decide to do some irregular comeback episodes - like the Four Blades, just record an episode when it suits you.
Get the decision to pull it on a weekly basis, if it’s become a burden, but there’s an audience there who would still like to hear from you.

All the best. UTB

What can I say, the first, the original and the best. Listened from the start and it was always a thing to look forward to on a Tuesday.

I think you boys felt like a lot of us Blades after the last Prem season when all the joy had been sucked out of football.

Thanks for the years of hard work, I have always really liked the down to earth modest style, you never tried to make it about you. Just two blokes who loved the Blades.

So Beans and the new boy Roygbiv and the original Jay thanks a bunch. Hopefully after a rest you might make a comeback!

Really disappointed to hear, I've always loved listening. Even in the down times I've found it strangely cathartic. I also really appreciate the balance you, Andrew (and Jay) always tried to bring. Never overly reactive when it goes wrong and with a healthy dose of pessimism when we were flying high.

Really well done for producing something that so many of us look forward to listening to. Thanks for taking the time to do it, you will be missed!

For years now, I've often looked forward to listening to the next instalment of BladesPod. My initial memories are of Jay and his #EndaDefenda campaign, one which quickly became thoroughly justified.

I've continued to enjoy listening following the departure of Jay, and the introduction of Roygbiv . I occasionally find myself going back and listening to some of the season review episodes published during the Covid hiatus, while we waited for football to return.

Similarly to Beans, I've found myself less enthused in surrounding myself in all things United in recent years. I've also seen my family start to grow, and my time has been subsequently focused elsewhere than Blades-related media. So while I don't run a podcast, I can wholeheartedly empathise with the loss of enthusiasm Ben described.

BladesPod has been my favourite piece of United-focused social media content, and typically the only one I've listened to. I shall miss it going forward, but wish the chaps well for the future. We're still all Blades after all.

Echoing the sentiments, it was always a good listen! Bladespod and SUW have been my go-tos after a game, I'll have to find another now!

I've only listened to the first half of the latest/last pod, but you both touched on a great point about the last Premier League season and how I feel about it now, in that it knocked the stuffing out of me and I've not had quite the same enthusiasm since then. A long, embarrassing season, followed by a disappointing season in which the failure to get promoted weirdly wasn't necessarily a bad thing as we know we'd be in for another long, embarrassing season getting pasted every weekend. It's tough being a Blade but never boring!

Are you going to do it in a very put on American accent and completely forget your roots then? To the backdrop of elevator music.

As someone that really enjoyed the original pod when it was yourself and Jay, it was something very new at that time and was during the start of, for me at least, analytics coming into the game for fans. I really appreciated the analysis and found it extremely interesting at a time when the Wilder years were taking off. Sorry to say that i didn't really listen too much after that, the format naturally changed and it just wasnt for me, nothing wrong in what you were doing, I just don't feel engaged with fan podcasts generally. I certainly didn't listen to any other Blades podcasts, but the few times I did listen to this one, yourself and Roy were entertaining and i know you maintained a good following as well as keeping connected with this forum.

Well done for years of producing content and keeping engaged with our fanbase, it can't always have been easy with some of the lows we've had as a club in the usual roller coaster of being a Blade!

Good luck in your next ventures!
Heathen

Gutted that there'll be no more episodes, but thanks very much Beans and Roygbiv for many years of great content.
As a Blade that doesn't get to games very often or have many mates that are Blades fans, always looked forward to the podcast as it felt like an easy going chat about the previous game whilst looking ahead to the next. Thanks again chaps :)
