Interesting, but the closest that article comes to the claim is "At the outbreak of the Great War, Sheffield was undoubtedly the world centre of armaments production and technology".

I think armaments in that sentence (in context of the article) refers to naval guns, that's a very different beast to being the "onetime global supplier of guns".

Beating palace wasnt just about being first to every ball. You also need to be able to play as well. Our possession % before the last 10mins tells that story.

When you think about SCC then they are often accused of living in the past, blocking progress etc. Usually by Sheffielders.

The article is drivel and just perpetuates Northern stereotypes which I thought had been consigned to the past. Even the photographs have been chosen to show a dowdy northern landscape. The Sheffield skyline photo is one of the worst I've ever seen. And where's that chimney, smack in the middle, belching out smoke?

While he's no Hunter S Thompson, the hack in question does play hard and loose with the facts. Poetic licence doesn't often feature in sports articles, and in my opinion it's good that there's space for such writing on a mainstream website.

Wish they'd used a different photo of Sheffield though. There are plenty to choose from. They must have deliberately searched for one showing industry and pollution

It writes like Fleetwood or Accrington has just got to the Prem not a club that I think was once statistically rated as the most under achieving club in Europe for crowd size v success. We are simply back where we belong which is what would have been written about a host of other clubs our size had they been promoted.
