With the FIFA World Club Cup coming to a close and with Chelsea being the first winners of the new (albeit Americanised) franchise trophy. Make of it all what you think. Thats a debate for another day.

It became news to me, like many of us knowing our Sheffield United history. We in fact were once ‘World Champions’.

See Wiki thread: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_World_Championship

Back in the 19th century, when the English and Scots had the arrogance around football that the American’s do with sports such as NFL. Crowning their national champions ‘World Champions’. There was an official tournament named ‘Football World Championship’.

It consisted of the Champions, or Domestic Cup winners from England and Scotland. The Blades were crowned English Football League Champions in 1887/88. Thus qualifying us for the Football World Championship. The Final consisted of a two legged match between The Blades and Celtic. Controversially before we had even been crowned English champions. The first game was won 1-0 at Bramall Lane with the second a 1-1 draw at Celtic Park.

The competition was discontinued in 1904. But the story still stands. We were one officially or now un-officially Champions of the world

Good job it wasn't at Wembley.

There was actually a glitch in the Winner Stays On machine after I had written my Blog about Sheffield United's assault on the Unofficial Football Club Championship. And it transpired that if you were watching United Home & Away in 1993/94, you may well have seen us challenge, unsuccessfully, for the World Title. Update below...

I remind pigs of this regularly. Also our war time league title. United are the last Sheffield team to win the top division
