Bury's last win at the Lane was in 1924-5. They are on a run of 20 league games without a victory there (and they've also failed to win 5 cup games at the Lane in that span).

This is the second longest ongoing winless streak at the Lane in league games - only Portsmouth (22 league games, last win in 1955-6) have gone longer without a league victory.

Another interesting Bury related fact is that I believe that of all the teams who have played in the top division and who are still in the league, they have had the longest current period absent from the top flight - 83 years and counting.

Well I'm coming from London for this one, so expect Bury to end that poor run. I came up for Walsall expecting us to lose and we did our very best; the gods won't pass up another chance.

On "firsts", the game at Yeovil was United's second ever competitive game in Somerset. When was the other one?

NB: this is on the traditional pre 1973, post 1996 boundaries.

vs Bristol Rovers at Bath in 1988-89?

correct -- 14/1/89 in a 1-1 draw - Agana got our goal.

Traditional counties in England United have never played a competitive game in are

Cornwall (though we have played friendlies there)
Dorset (ditto a friendly v Poole in 1981)
Huntingdonshire
Rutland
Westmorland

Could be a decent time to play Bury, they've just lost Lowe and it looks like Mozika is joining Scunthorpe.

I think this will be a good game on Saturday, looking forward to it.

On one of my ventures across the Irish Sea i witnessed a Katchouro Hat-trick in front of the Kop in a 3-1 win. Think we were 1-0 down at HT too. Warnock was managing Bury and kept referring to the Blades as 'we'/'us' in his post match interview. I'm shit with dates but i'll take a guess it was 97/98 season.

Nearly - was 98-99 14/11/98 to be precise.

Bury are still coming to terms with a dramatic deadline day as they prepare for the short trip to Sheffield United tomorrow, writes Ben Collins.

The sale of star striker Ryan Lowe was confirmed during the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy exit against Crewe on Tuesday.

Midfielder Damien Mozika then joined Scunthorpe the following day – also for a six-figure fee – but manager Richie Barker moved swiftly to complete three signings.

Shane Byrne (Leicester) and Giles Coke (Sheffield Wednesday) have come in on loan while Bury also paid out their first fee for over four years – around £20,000 to land out-of-favour Northampton striker Shaun Harrad.

“I’m sure it was the busiest transfer deadline at Bury for a good few years,” said Barker.

“It was a hectic 48 hours but I think it’s positive because although we’ve sold two players, we’ve brought three in.

“I’ve got to say a massive thank you to the chairman and the board. I only asked them for those three players and they pulled out all the stops to get me all three.

“It’s becoming easier to attract good players. All I had to say to them was ‘do you want to play in front of 20,000 at Bramall Lane on Saturday?’

“I think we’ve sent out a message to League One because the feedback we’ve had so far is that everybody thinks they’re decent signings.”

Barker is looking to building on an encouraging start of seven points from five games.

“No disrespect to the two players that have left but I believe the squad’s a bit stronger now,” he added.

Coke should start tomorrow, with Byrne and Harrad likely to feature from the bench.

Key opponent: Ched Evans - Top scorer for Sheffield United

Prediction: Sheffield United 1 Bury 0 - Bury have a tough game ahead

Impressive considering the time he's spent on the pitch...

Williamson, Monty and McDonald all unlikely to be available tomorrow. Step forward David McAllister. Surely Wilson will play him after his scoring performance during the week.

Team for tomorrow:

------- SS

Lowton Collins Maguire Lesclinel

Flynn Doyle* McAllister Quinn

------ Porter Cresswell

* I would like to see Harriot alongside Davie Mac, but doubt Wilson will do that.

I will be expecting more from Flynn on Saturday. Wilson should be saying to him 'right, we're at home, now shouw me your attacking ability'. Flynn has been fairly solid when playing away from home and has helped Lowton pout by tracking back. However, he has done nothing getting forward. He's looked light weight and not interested. As he home team I would like to see him get more involved, put his foot on the ball, beat his man and/or put in some decent crosses for Cressy/Porter. I am sure that Wilson will give him a chance (as he is his signing) and it will be interesting to see if he plays differently at home, but I would have Mendez-Laing ready if he carries on in the same vein.

I really want us to give someone a right hammering,we havnt done that for years.
i take today as a perfect opportunity.
4.0 blades
cressy hat-trick

Just to put a dampener on things, i'm going for a 1-1 today....

I've got a feeling that we're not quite as good as we think we are (yet), and that we'll miss Williamson, MacDonald and Monty (!!) in midfield.

Porter isn't up to speed, and i'm yet to see anything to get excited about with the Mendez-Laing / Flynn signings.....

Kop for that dose of pessimism !! :-)

Edit: that'll be a 5-0 mauling then :-)

How lazy is the journo who cites our key player and top scorer as someone who hasn't and may not play this season?

2-0 blades today.

Who to pick as first gs though? Hmmmm I fancy a Maguire towering header.

Got a feeling we might get held to a draw today. Agree with Mendocca that I think we might miss the creativity of McDonald and Williamson. That said, I could see United sneaking it by 1 goal. A lot will depend on how the likes of McAllister and Flynn/Liang perform. At home I would hope that these players step up and play. With the full backs bombing forward, Quinn on fire and Cresswell wearing his scoring boots I think we will score. I am going for 1-1 (possibly with the Blades sneaking it late on).

I think everyone is expecting us to get a major wake up call so they fear the worst.

I'd also like to add more about how much more luck we are getting. Last season Porter wouldn't have gotten that easy chance. The ball never bounced for us in a scramble.

We'll be treating the football league show with our football later, but in the mean time, here's a video of Quinny's free kick in the first half:
