New deals for Blades young players

United's desire to create a clear pathway for Academy graduates to progress through to the first-team squad has seen four young professionals sign new deals with the Club.


Ben Whiteman, who made his Football League debut for the Blades earlier this season and David Brooks, who was unused substitute against Crewe Alexandra and Southend United last month have committed their immediate futures to United, along with highly-rated goalkeeper Jake Eastwood and promising striker Jake Wright.


Prior to making his league debut against Oldham Athletic in March, Whiteman, 19, made his debut for the Blades in the FA Cup last season and has skippered the U21s, showing his versatility, playing in both defence and midfield.


Brooks, 18, joined from Manchester City in 2015 and is another who has been instrumental to the success of United's development side this term, whilst he also enjoyed a loan spell with Halifax Town earlier this season.


Sheffield-born 19-year-old Eastwood, who has had experience of being away within England training camps previously, has overcome shoulder surgery to play a part for both the U18s and U21 this campaign and Wright, also 19, has been a regular scorer for the U21s this season, after enjoying a goal-laden loan spell with Hallam FC.


Speaking of the aforementioned quartet, boss Nigel Adkins remarked: "An important part of a player's development is to have the hunger and attitude to work hard at their game and the passion to play football at the highest possible standard. We are pleased to give these lads more opportunity to develop and endeavour to be first team regulars at Bramall Lane."

That's because they had a deal with Ford to provide cars for them so all the 'good guys' cars were Fords and the villains often had Jags and the like. It may have changed at some point as there were several series.

I seem to have read that somewhere. I think the bad guy in Die Another Day drove a Jag too. I quite like Jags to be fair so maybe that makes me Dick Dastardly or something

Added to that, I seem to remember whenever there was a Bank Job, the villans had Transits?

I would like to know what the situation is with Ramsdale. I don't know the in and outs of kids contracts but I hope they've got him tied on a deal or is this another case of a player who can be poached by the Premiership for peanuts?

Since the sales of Walker and Naughton I don't think the academy has been as successful as people think it has been or it should have been. Take away Lowton and Maguire then it hasn't produced in the way that people would have hoped it would.

Long has been average, still got a lot of scope to improve though, but then you get to the rest, McFadzean, Kennedy, Ironside, Whitehouse etc and a lot of them despite being highly rated will not make grade or haven't already made the grade, Diego De Girolamo was our last highly rated youngster to come through but through a multiple of different reasons hasn't made it, primarily attitude and injury.

I hope this current crop of youngsters get the breaks they need and come through to become as successful as we want them to be, but I also have concerns that SUFC at the minute isn't a conductive environment to the development of young players

There was also, as Adkins has repeatedly pointed out, enough professionals on the books at the start of this season to field 3 full teams plus subs so it's really no surprise that none of the younger players have made their way though.

Clough spoke about having a "core of 18-20" then supplementing with the academy lads. Adkins is making that happen.

To be fair to Kennedy - he would have made the grade if it weren't for his knee issues.
Shame, really, as the lad's will to win is top drawer and he reads the game really well.
