He’s a good player and I’d be glad to get him but where does he fit for us? We’re arguably strongest on the right side of defence
I don't really understand why we'd use very limited resources on bringing him in. He's decent enough but playing him at LCB would seem like a waste. I would also think that Everton would want to sell him given their money issues.

I’m not convinced he’s coming here…but he’d fit at RCB with Anel moving either to the centre of the three (playing like an old fashioned sweeper) or to CDM
If Anel moves to the middle where's Egan go? And I doubt it'll be LCB with an expected signing coming in this position and Robbo.

It’s only idle speculation, chaps…I’m definitely not ITK or owt…but if we can add more pace to our back line, why wouldn’t we?
Egan’s been a magnificent servant, a legend, a rock, but he ain’t gonna go on forever.

good point youve brought up there holgate would give us more pace at the back i think hes coming in at rcb with either anel or egan moving to lcb

Like people have said, Egan plays LCB for Ireland, but he's certainly not a marauding, forward thinking player like Anel is.
Anel could do it, being right footed whilst bombing down the left just means he'll have to cut inside more when going forward, which isn't always a bad thing.

I very much doubt we'll move Anel into midfield or LCB

This is his showcase season where he gets to show his worth for a bigger move.

No way he'd be happy to go into the prem playing a position he's not familiar with.

Ultimately it's obviously not his decision where he's selected to play, but ruffling feathers and all that.

If he's coming in. To play as RWB, RCB or RDM no problem. As a LCB huge problem. He's taking up a loan slot that could have been used better for a LCB such as his team mate Branthwaite. Moving Egan or Anel across will not work and affect the balance of the team as we saw on the occasions last season when Bash and Anel were tried at LCB. Doesn't work with right footers and slows down our build up play.

I would love us to get Branthwaite. Would be an ideal long term JOC replacement. I think Everton already turned down a large offer for him though. I can't see them letting him out on loan again and I doubt we've got enough money to buy him.

Yes I agree they'll want big money but someone of his ilk 6 foot 5 left footed and good in the air. Greaves at Hull would be cheaper.

We can't afford him permanently and it sounds like the two loans we're after are O'Brien and McAtee.

Don't think it's a starter. Good player but not worth using a loan on given he plays in an area we aren't desperate to strengthen.

If you want more pace at LCB play RND there.

Moving our slowest CB to the left sound like a bad idea. Yes, he plays there for Ireland but international football is much slower.

Sounds about right.

I didn’t / still don’t think he’s what we need anyway.

Rhys did well there, agree.

Who's to say the trialist or Freckleton can't emerge as genuine options?

Let's not be snobbish about it.

Chris Smalling came from Maidstone in the Isthmian Premier League direct to Fulham in the Premier League.

It might be rare but it happens.

Freckleton has already a very good physicality. Not seen him play more than a few U21 games but he had a good loan in the Conference. No saying he needs to go to League One loan. Championship loan etc. He might be one we decide to bring into the group already. Perhaps there is more sense running with him than buying a 21 year old from Lyon for 5m who also might be rough around the edges. He might have scored on debut as YorkBlade states. But he's also been sent off 4 times. That suggests he either lacks discipline or gets himself into positions he really shouldn't.

Anel, Egan and Robbo were a good unit last year. Maybe they can be this year too.

Latest rumour is that Southampton are selling Caleta-Car to Lyon and Holgate will be his replacement.

As I was saying about Shelvey and Woods at Forest this is why we are struggling to get Ndiaye to sign a contract. If the liked of those 3 are all on over 70k there's no wonder Ndiayes agent is playing hard ball
its always going to be a problem with us salaries we just cant pay enough to get the quality players in we need to survive in the premier league
