Baldock and Enda have been amazing but can’t help but feel they may have hit their ceiling. I reckon we could take a step up if we improved at wingback to players with a better attacking outlay. Defo seems good to be linked with players as good if not better than current options so we take a step from signing cover to signing competition

Re. players who 'hit' their ceiling. A bit of a fatuous argument to be honest, you might as well suggest that Virgil van Dijk has 'peaked', therefore a replacement should be bought. That 'peak' is the accumulation of learning their craft, of becoming players more than capable to adjusting to the rigours of the Premier Division, and in many cases excelling at this level. I appreciate that both Baldock, and especially Stevens, took time, after the enforced layoff, to return to the levels that we've come to expect from either player.

Yes, it makes sense to have decent cover in all positions, but to suggest that by hitting a 'peak' a player might be exposed in some way seems a bit of a circular and, dare I say, unnecessarily damaging argument to put forward. We have a good to great defence, arguably the main reason why we've managed to remain a Premier team. Recruitment will be ongoing, I think we expect this, but please don't throw onto the table the view that players are vulnerable when there's little to support this opinion. Players have slumps in form, but the two players in question have generally been two of our better players.

Can't see it happening whilst he's on holiday in Nothern Greenland.

At this stage i’m not sure if he actually is on Holiday or there’s a place in Greenland called Matikass or something

The levels that both of these two play at is obviously exceptional. They have both proved that they can be premier league players. However, is it not naive to never talk about their weaknesses due to sentimentality and previous seasons. Football is a ruthless game. Lee Evans seemed a great fit until we found Norwood and suddenly we upped our levels. Do you not think that with a more creative outlet at wing back we could push on like wolves have? I don’t mean to bring criticism on two players that I love and have just got us this far. All I’m saying is that in my head that’s the position that we could best strengthen and could lead to an improvement in baldocks game due to more competition.

so with West Ham, Burnley and Southampton allegedly interested too, trying to see who’d be the most attractive proposition...

Shef Utd - joining 2 ex-forest team mates whos careers have immeasurably improved since, although could be rotating with Baldock, or with Berge at RCM spot - would imagine he’d see plenty of game time, wouldnt have to move, short commute

West Ham - Rotation with Ngakia (looks a real prospect) and Fredericks, a big move to london on the cards and threats of relegation, probably would get the best wages here though

Burnley - look set to stay in the EPL long-term although turmoil may be on the horizon, Dyche a massive incentive and could be leaving, would most likely be backup/rotation with Lowton.

Southampton - surely unlikely with KWP arriving - if this transfer falls through i would imagine they will poach Cash - doubt he would go otherwise

i’d say out of this we come favourites (but i would say that wouldnt i)... just really hoping we dont get caught in a bidding war as a team like WHU will blow us out the water... imo Burnley are our biggest rivals to this transfer, i have a feeling Didzy, Osborn and Robinson will have a word to butter him up to snatch him

Agree however I can't see Berge in that RCM position when we come back.

yeah, are you thinking Berge in the Norwood position? looks like Cash would be handy as RCM 1st choice and he’d be backup for Baldock too, Berge could also be rotation for the RCM spot if reqd now that he has experience there

There are parts of your reply I agree with. Of course it won't harm to have a player waiting in the wings who'll keep Baldock on his toes, but this applies to every player. Given the likelihood of a drop in form or injury, it's a sensible and practical approach to have other good players in case they're needed. I'd question your point about Evans. Even before Norwood's arrival there were many, me included, who questioned Evan's apparent preference to make a sideways pass rather than play the ball forward. Evans did, of course, score a spectacular goal whilst a Blade, but that was his high point during his stay here.

You mention Wolves and compare us to them. Wolves are a club where they have the resources to spend at a level we're currently unable to, so they can attract players due to their finances that we'd be unable to attract. Given the current questions being asked about the impact the pandemic has had on football I doubt anyone is able to discuss who is able to spend in the way we had hoped. Of course strengthening is crucial, but not at the cost of spending what we don't have. Wilder has run a sensible and practical approach to finances ever since he became manager, and I can see little reason for this to change. I can see all manner of improvements we could make, but it will have to be evolution rather than revolution. As for your assertion that the position we need to focus on is that of Baldock and Stevens tends to overlook the need we have for more effective attacking players. For what it's worth, a good creative midfield option plus at least one further attacking threat would seem to be priorities, but it's an ongoing issue, and we've not even discussed the position of goalkeeper.

Ngakia is out of contract

Yeah I do understand that we won’t have lots of money to spend and that there are plenty of more pressing positions that need improving and providing cover for. However it’s a cheaper fix to create more chances for a player that we spent 20 million pounds on at the top of the pitch than it is to go and buy another one and hope they create their own chances. I liked the idea of playing baldock and another wingback with a more lethal final third pass/cross in rotation depending on the opposition. I’m also finding myself getting fixated and baldock but only because I’m thinking of the cash signing. I’m not meaning to and I do love him, just trying to ask the questions on how we could get better

Which is no bad thing, I think we all want to see the Blades progress while remaining Prem club. I doubt we're broke but the pennies will need careful management. There are probably pledges to at least improve the training facilities, and possibly the ground, pledges that have been set in motion, so the broader picture in terms of what we can and cannot invest in is vital. I don't envy Wilder as he attempts to make sure the team is strengthened, plus the necessity for better training facilities, and it offers a picture that many won't consider.

Improving the stature of the club is so important, wilder has to balance improving everything around the place with improving the first team I order to stay in the division. The most important thing is to stay in the premier league, but he always says how he won’t stand still. I hope the man signs a lifetime contract. It feels like whilst ever he is at the helm we will be alright and the right decisions are being made on and off the pitch

Yeah I do think Berge is norwoods replacement or understudy.. plus DCM is his natural position, think he'll be played in that spot for the friendlies and during training.

Out of these you would say we are the only one within a realistic commute of the East Midlands so if he wants to stay put or has a young family then we could be the best bet. Car pool with Didz/Oz/J-Robbo.

Kyle walker-peters sold for 12mill. Is Matty Cash is as good or better? One a proven premier league player, the other a proven championship player. Good luck to Fore
Cash played every game this season bar 1 at Right Back, why are people convinced he'll play RCM?
Because we’re desperate for pace, energy and skill there? Plus Baldock has had a blinding season?

Please tell me if i'm being nave but surely he will have been scouted as a right back seeing as he played there 99% of the time?

agreed with the comments on Cash’s position - Wilder’s system relies on each player skilled and fluid in multiple positions, as we all know Bash is the epitomy of this ethos

Cash will basically act as a right side player, overlapping and linking up with RWB/RCM, he seems versatile and a great all round right sided player and i am sure he will fill in at both positions similarly to how Osborn has at LCM/LWB

He's 1.85m tall - can he head the ball ?
If so , he could even be cover for Bash.
That would be a very versatile signing.
Plus he'd realise that with 3 potential positions , he'd be likelier to get games.
I am keen on this lad coming in.

Adding 'Wilder admires the RB' at the end of a tweet that suggests he has already all but signed seems a little redundant to me.
