Woodburn

It is appropriate, it’s business, supply and demand.
Liverpool have a young player in big demand, they rate him far higher than Brooks. He’s wanted by clubs at Championship level but needs games at a decent level. So Liverpool can easily put in penalty clauses/ fines and there’s still many clubs that are interested.

I know an Everton fan he’s says his Liverpool mates say he’s going to be a PL star.
Brooks was poor ar his age and look how he progressed, suspect Woodburn will be the same.

Just needs patience, some of our fans are so quick to write off a player after 4 subs appearances and 1 start. Although there is the factor of wrong club wrong time....as well as right club right time. He just needs time
...although my concern is more that his body language looks poor, as though he’s not that bothered and not trying.
Looks far more like he's terrified and a rabbit caught in the headlights rather than not trying.

He tried at QPR he just looked like a boy playing a mans game. Scared stiff of the ball.

Windburn had a meteoric rise through the ranks at Liverpool culminating in playing for Wales and looking a star in the making.
He seems to have lost his way a bit the success he's had maybe coming too quickly and has taken his eye off the work ethic needed to maintain his progress.
He's come to the right place as Wilder will do him no favours and demand he puts in a shift.
He is very young and players sometimes need a bit of time to adjust. Not worth a place in the team at present and needs to fight to get in the team.
Liverpool should recognise this and no fines are necessary,he has to earn his stripes klopp should recognise this ,Wilder will do right by him.

I don't understand my people were so excited by this signing in the first place, young forwards from top PL clubs are hit and miss, we never seem to end up with an Abraham/Afobe type player. It's more Twiss/Wilson/Cofie for us.

Really need Duffy to stay fit don't we?

Shame we'll probably have to burn him out in the first half of the season.

Like brooks, in this division Woodburn is a striker. I am really surprised that it’s it’s m really been tried. He also might want to calm his night life down a bit till he’s settled

I would have a wager he will start versus Hull and has probably have been told so. Wilder did it to Sharp last season.

Didn't come off the bench last week, didn't even make the squad this week.

Something has gone very wrong.

I really don't want to know how much money we are paying Liverpool in fines, its totally inappropriate that we get punished for him not being good enough.
the only thing that went wrong so far is that Coutts returned to fitness.

Ricky, I have a cunning scheme...
What about if we take him off after 70 mins if we are winning? you know, to rest him and prevent burn out.

A bit like we have for the last two seasons you mean?

Didn't really work did it?

That got me thinking if we have actually ever had any decent forward players on loan from the Premier League in my time, and the only one I can think of is Andy Reid. In terms of youngsters I'm struggling to think of any!

Ian Rush
Michael Twiss
Alex Notman
Geoff Horsfield?
Lee Martin
Craig Beattie
Keith Treacy
Michael O'Halloran
James Wilson
Ben Woodburn

I'm sure there's plenty more I can't remember but that's not a great list so far.

We've had some shit, that's for sure. Liverpool loan signings always make me think of Jon Newby. Have a look through the threads below for some good and bad!

He was a sensible signing. Had the potential to be the dog's bollocks but has been kept off the starting line by better, more mature players. If we weren't prepared to take a risk with young loanees, we wouldn't have landed Henderson.

They can't/don't all work out - it's very much a numbers game.

The little time he has played he has shown some good touches and I can see why he is at a club like Liverpool.

The problem for me is that he doesn't seem to fit playing as an attacking midfielder behind the front two. He looks like he would suit being on the right or left of a front 3 e.g. how Liverpool play. I would guess this is how he has been used in Liverpool's under 23s, so maybe needs a bit of time to adapt to a different role.

The thing with Woodburn, he'd probably be starting at 7/8 of the other clubs in this division week in /week out.

The unfortunate thing for the lad is, we have Mark Duffy who for me is the best, most technically gifted attacking midfielder (AMC in FM terms) in the league.

The fact he isn't playing is actually a good thing for us, as it shows we have an alternative superior option.

Get shut of him as soon as we can he’s not good enough - also get rid of that kid we signed from Man City he’s done nowt.

Almost every young player and even mature players new to a club, have spells of “doing nowt”.
They need developing and patience is the key. Don’t think anyone has even seen the Man City lad yet.
Coutts and Duffy all had spells of looking underwhelming and doing nowt in their early careers with us...look at them now.

Agreed - think we are unsure where to play him.

Ideally if we can get 3 goals up on someone like Hull at home, then get him on. I am sure a goal would do him a world of good.

I hope someone bookmarks this thread and throws it back at me, and I would be delighted to be proved wrong and humiliated on what I'm about to say....

.....I just don't think he's up to it. He seems like the type of luxury player who needs high quality around him to make him shine, and if he's not getting the games (quite rightly) I can see him returning to Liverpool in January.

I do fear he will become the next Stefan Scougall. Ridiculously early days I know, nothing personal no agenda no scapegoating etc, it's just based on what I've seen

I've never been more excited by a signing in years yet he just doesn't seem cut out for this level as of yet, and I don't think we have the time to develop him.

As I said, tin hat on, and would love to regret this thread....

I picked up on something that Klopp said just before we signed him commenting on the preseason and the youth team’s tour. He said “Ben’s 100% back!” which made me wonder if he’d been off his game for a while.

Maybe all the hype got to him, if he can play well for his country and in the Premier League he’s got to have something about him. He’s only a kid, 3 years younger than Brooks so maybe it’s a lack of confidence thing that scoring a goal could help cure. I was hoping we’d be coasting against PNE and he’d get another chance, it wasn’t to be, but I think he needs to play with the pressure off if he’s going to find his feet with us.

It's not worked. I was hopeful that he'd be a decent signing, but it doesn't look like it's going to come off.

He needed to hit the ground running if he was to be in with a chance of playing regularly, but he's made virtually no impact whatsoever.

We can't afford to give him time on the pitch for the sake of 'development' when we've got players who make more of an impact now.

Hope he proves me wrong etc...

Add Freeman to that list too

Problem is he needs to be put in from the start, and told to try and influence the game, don’t worry if it doesn’t come off, your starting for the next 4 games.
That would give him the confidence and freedom to play his game.
He obviously has something or he wouldn’t be on their books, and CW saw something.
But, we cannot afford to do that. Maybe if come end of April we’re sat in 10th can’t go up can’t go down then maybe, but at that point I would rather one of our academy lads come on.
Finally, how many of these youngsters from top team loans have we had that have actually worked? GK aside before someone scream Blackman & Hendo!

I was in The Wirral at the weekend. Our taxi driver was a big Liverpool fan. When I mentioned who I supported he was very interested in my thoughts on Woodburn. I said he was too light weight and not getting much game time. He said that over the summer Woodburn had been going through a programme to build him up. They have very high hopes for him. He fully understood he may not have the strength for the Championship and drew the comparison with Brooks.

Some people are really fucking dense.

Duffy's form has deteriorated in the second half of the last two seasons. No argument.

Should've known pointing that out might've been a bit strong for the Ideal Blades.

If we had a proper backup for him who doesn't significantly change or weaken us, we'd have a better chance of seeing Duffy perform at a similar high level all season.
