Here an update on my condition. After taking horrendous fluids and spending all night on the toilet I attended the hospital today for the colonoscopy 5th April. Worried sick of course since the diagnosis of a tumour in the Dolan, I did not want any sedation and halfway through this the pain was agonising as a valve on the device with the camera had got clogged up but they soon sorted this out. I must have been in there forty minutes. The area where the ultrasound and the CT scan which the tumour was pin pointed and seen by consultants me and my wife HAD GONE. The consultant spent twenty minutes in that particular area with camera viewing from all different angels. I watched all the procedure and the consultant said well whatever was there has gone the bowel is completely healthy. From that area there was swelling from outside and he took biopsies from healthy tissue just for the record. He said the swelling is probably caused by the appendix which is swollen and pressing against the outer wall of the bowel. He said it’s your lucky day no cancer at all in the bowel. I can tell you the emotion was unbelievable and even got a firm handshake from the consultant. He said they will analyse the samples but he is pretty much sure it will be fine and that it’s the appendix that will have to come out. Over the last few weeks we have been to hell and back and a great cloud has been lifted. He said a appendectomy is simple compared to having some of your bowel out. My wife was completely shell shocked and tears were shed. I now await the results and look forward to getting this bloody appendix out. I have to take it easy for a couple of days then make sure I don’t antagonise the appendix. Listen fellow Blades thank you for support it has helped and they don’t know why the tumour disappeared maybe it’s all those people saying a prayer for me. We will be going out tomorrow taking it easy in this spring like weather and thanking God it looks like I’ve been given a second chance. I love all of you Blades.

Brilliant news for you. Really pleased to hear of your good news.

That's pretty well how I felt when they'd finished x raying me, putting me in scanners and sticking things into my lungs and told me there was nothing wrong. Well done.

That last post is brilliant mate. As you so correctly describe, to hell and back. But now there's light at the end of this particular tunnel and you can resume your life with, hopefully, a new appreciation of those things we all take for granted.

It's great that you're not alone, and your wife will have suffered in ways that are difficult to imagine, but you've come through a terrible ordeal and the surgeon has given you a thumb's up for the future. The very best for today and the future mate, life is short enough as it is, at least you can now enjoy everything that matters to you.

Nice to hear some good news. All the best OTB.

Unfortunately, the pigs have won a couple of games.
Every silver lining has a cloud.

Excellent news blade. Just take it easy. The consultants do know their stuff as I can testify. UTB

And all you over 60s, make sure you do the stool test that is sent through the post. A good friend of mine sent his back and it showed early stage of bowel cancer. He was whisked into hospital where they removed a tumour and he then had a few chemo or radiation treatments and is now all clear. Without the test he would have been in real trouble so don't ignore it...DO IT!

Cracking news that pal, puts things into perspective for you.

Great news OTB all the best.
I would echo the thoughts about the bowel test for the over 60's, when I got one through the post I thought do I really want to know in case they find something. That thought lasted a second and next morning I was spreading shit onto a little card far better to know good or bad early than find out too late.

Oh what an age to be 60 - a cheap season ticket and being able to send shit through the post without getting arrested. Can't wait now!

The thing you need to ask your Consultant is if the rumour they found was benign or malignant? This is a very important question. You absolutely must ask it.

If it’s benign then no problems at all. Very common, completely harmless. If it’s malignant, still not bad news necessarily, providing they’ve caught it early enough, but you’ll need regular checks to ensure it hasn’t spread elsewhere.

It sounds like your Consultant is revelling in playing God to me. I know, I’ve worked with these guys for years. They do get a bit beyond themselves at times. My advice: don’t revere him for giving you this hopeful news without questioning it further. It’s down to you and your awareness and willingness seek advice that you’re in this positive situation. Not down to his miracle working “cure”. You deserve the credit. His job is relatively easy to perform the surgery. But you need to know more.

All the best btw.

Great news OTB!

I got my stool test kit 7 days after my 60th birthday.

It came back ‘inconclusive’ twice so they sent me for a colonoscopy just to be sure and it turned out I’d got a tumour and it was malignant. The good news is that because of the early ‘stool test’ it was caught early and was only level one which meant it hadn’t spread beyond the inner surface of the bowel and didn’t need any chemo or radiotherapy. The two year screening at 60 had only just been introduced back then. If I’d been a year older it might have been a different story.

8 years on I’m as fit as I’ve been since my early 40’s (having cancer helps you refocus), and I’m still clear of that evil bastard disease.

PLEASE listen to what Derf says fellow Blades, the test are now being rolled out at 55 and you’d be an absolute MUG not to take them.

Nice one OTB,

On a side note when they take that appendix out make sure they have a breadcake handy with some pre cooked smokey bacon sausage and tomato....just thinking tha might be hungry after op like......
:eek::confused:o_O

Best wishes and all the best for the future.

That’s really great news pal. Delighted for you & the family.
Amazing to a non-medic like me that these things show up then seemingly disappear. As Cerberus says earlier, maybe there are few questions to ask to understand all that’s happened & make sure it’s kept on top of from here on in.
That said, great news & UTB’s !!

Hey Gray, many young lads on here won't know what the 'stool test' is. Talk 'em through it , they'll never believe you !!

Just maybe that 25 year old consultant was functioning beyond his competency level. Hope he's learned a better way of conveying information from this case.

Great news Blade.

Update on this difficult time. Yesterday I had the appendix out and although in pain now but it’s the right sort of pain a getting better sort of pain. The Consultant surgeon said it was appendicitis and they had to clear out a lot of goo. When this all started i was told a tumour but thank God it was an appendix. He said the appendix was well swollen pressing against the colon. No follow up appointments needed just got to be careful for a few weeks. He confirmed no nasty stuff.
I would like to thank all of you for your wonderful messages of support. The cloud has finally lifted
Looking forward at last UTB FTP
