Good morning fellow Blades,
Firstly, a quick (ok, long) introduction for anyone that doesn’t know me (I don’t post much these days) or the Inter Blades Legends.
Many years ago, the “Inter Blades”, were a team of Blades supporters playing in the official supporters league the “IFA” (Internet Football Association), which was formed in 1996 during the Euro 96 tournament. For a long period of time I was either running, managing or playing (or all of the above) for the Inter Blades team. The team used to play fellow supporters teams up and down the country on a Saturday morning, usually the supporters’ team of Sheffield United’s actual opposition that afternoon, or a team that was either local or visiting the area playing a local team. The pinnacle of the season was the summer “WorldNet” tournament. A weekend long tournament, held at various venues round the country.
My involvement with the team ended a long time ago now, due to kids, work etc. and the team continued for a few more years before calling it a day. However, a few years back a lot of us had kept in touch, and hearing that the WorldNet tournament was being hosted locally (Sunny Donny), we decided to make a comeback in the Vets competition within WorldNet (over 35s).
We’ve entered for the last couple of seasons now and tentatively have our name down for this year’s tournament. However, numbers are looking a bit low at present squad wise. Now I wouldn’t have a problem getting a few mates in to supplement the squad, but I would much prefer to see if there are any other Blades out there that might be interested in getting involved first.
The “Vets” competition is “Over 35’s”, so ideally anyone interested should be at least 35, however, the competition rules allow 2 x under 35 “outfield” players to be on the pitch at any time. So, we could have several under 35s in the squad, but only 2 on the pitch at any one time (plus this season the goalkeeper doesn’t count, so we could have an under 35 keeper). Ideally, I don’t like to have more than 3 x under 35s to make sure they get plenty of game time. If you are interested and are “under 35”, then please let me know, as obviously we can only have so many.
The matches themselves are the usual 11-a-side on grass pitches, 30 minute matches (15 each-way). I think we’ll be playing 3 group matches on the Saturday, then it’s knockout on the Sunday, so how long we’re there depends on our success!
The tournament this year again is taking place in Doncaster, at the Yorkshire Main venue in Edlington, on Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th June. It usually starts at around 10am (but we meet earlier to get set up) and will end depending on the schedule at around 4-5pm-ish.
If anyone out there is interested, or would like any more info, then let me know and we can take it from there.
P.S. It’s £20 each per player to cover the tournament entry fee. If we end up with more than the entry fee then we either split it back out equally, or if only just a bit more then use the extra cash to buy a load of drinks etc.
