This feels a little like insurance if Berge goes.
Even with Hecky looking to fill 6 positions, he can do that without signing Lawrence.
1.Davies - Davies re-signs.
2.Uremovic/Goode - Ahmedhodžić.
3.Davies - ? Youngster or Ahmedhodžić covers this too or is JOC back? Or does Norrington-Davies cover? Either way it isn't Lawrence.
4. Hourihane - Coulibaly gives an extra body in midfield and we still have Osborn.
5. Gibbs-White - Doyle.
6. McGoldrick - N'Diaye.
You play a no 10 and you have Berge in his new more advanced role and Doyle as options, where Pep suggested he would play best, both competing. This then leaves N'Diaye and Sharp, or some mix of Brewster, McBurnie and Jebbo/Osula. That's 2 10s and at least 4 senior centre forwards plus young lads.
Or you play 3 up top and you've got Berge, N'Diaye and Doyle competing for 2 slots and Sharp, Brewster and McBurnie for one before you look to the younger lads.
It seems well stocked. You remove Berge and it looks potentially light all of a sudden. N'Diaye has to be a no 10 option so you lose a striker and you've got no alternative to N'Diaye and Doyle if you play 2 behind a striker.
It makes sense to get in there early and not be looking to replace Berge with some random gamble in the last hour. Alternatively, with our injury record, maybe it is just insurance for absences. Having the extra forward when 3 seniors are coming off the back of an injury and the other forward has seldom completed the full ninety is common sense. Even Berge had a bad injury in recent times.
