I'll point out to you that Sharp didn't do well here at first, neither did McBurnie or a variety of other players that have since gone on to progress incredibly well. There's very clearly a player in there, we just don't use him well

The team at the time played genuine, front foot football. Wingers like Manhoeff running at players, balls towards the CBs for players like Cannon to run onto from Baker (who played a similar role to Norwood).

It was a more aggressive style of football that left them open due to the pace of their defence, but benefited players like Cannon who played off the defenders and would make attacking runs off the ball

He’s clearly not good enough, had loads of chances to perform but at times he doesn’t even look professional standard. I watched him a bit for Stoke. Not as much as you as don’t you have family that support Stoke? I kept an eye on him out if interest as he had supposed to be wilders final summer loan before the prince pulled the plug so it was obvious wilder would try again.

However when it was rumoured we were willing to match a 13m bid from Sunderland I wrote this in the rumour thread

I’ve watched him 6/7 times this season.

I just like watching football. When we’re not on I watch whatever is available. Usually take an interest in ex players or players we’ve been linked with so watched Stoke a bit on the red button / dodgy stick.

They’re truly terrible which is baffling for the amount of investment and some of the players they’ve had over recent years but they’re turd.

Regarding Cannon. He’s a good finisher. Has a nice touch and has a trait where he likes to get a shot off early - complete opposite of Moore at times who gets closed down before pulling the trigger.

I personally think he’s way too passive to be worth £13 million. He doesn’t seem to have any outstanding attributes. He’s not big, not dominant, not particularly strong and is not blessed with loads of pace.

When Stoke played Wednesday, Wednesdays went down to 10 men and Stoke weee just crying out for a couple of player to step up and take the game by the scruff of the neck. The Wednesday defence looked a literal bombscare with the ball anywhere near them. They just needed to press and press hard. They were all beyond passive it was so frustrating to watch and they ended up losing 2-0. Cannon did not lead the line well that day at all. It’s been a similar story in most of the other games I’ve seen him in too. If he’s getting service he looks pretty sharp. He doesn’t create anything for himself and his hold up play is not brilliant.

For £13m I wanted someone in who was head and shoulders better than what’s here already. An absolute cert to start. As it stands I think he and Campbell will offer very similar numbers between now and the end of the season. Just one was free and one looks like costing £13m

Had a good read of the Stoke forum thread on him - back before there was any sign of a recall and their views were very varied. Some didn’t think he worked hard enough or influenced games enough and some thought he was their best striker in years.

Ecstatic to be proven wrong and he’ll have my 100% backing should he sign. It’s also great to get a statement signing in during the window and potentially beat a promotion rival to someone’s signature. That’s not a scenario we blades have enjoyed all that many times in our recent history.

I think I called it pretty well. He doesn’t have any particularly outstanding attributes apart from a decent, clean strike of the ball. Hes not rapid, he’s not skilful, he’s not big and strong. Unless you’re going to build a team around setting them up on a plate for him I can’t see it working out for him here, unfortunately he’s not changed my mind.

I would have liked to see the chance Rothwell spooned over the top fall to cannon though as I reckon he sticks it away but would absolutely sell him if we could.

I know this is just a rumour but what has happened the the cut throat ruthless wilder we had when he was on the up?

Remember early days where he signed players and if they wasnt up to it cut them lose as quickly as we signed them (or eventually signed them).

He's seem to have lost that side of him the bigger the value on players. Brewster & cannon wouldnt have survived the earlier version of wilder.

Well, I hope it is. Wilder Mk1 made some poor signings but he had a real ruthless streak with them. Hussey, Holmes etc - was clear they weren’t good enough and it didn’t matter that they were his signings they were out. He needs to get over this stubborn phase and find that ruthless streak again.

Cannon might be alright in a team set up around creating chances for him. Hes never going to create anything for himself or anyone else. So he’s not going to work for us.

Not surprising that he says that. This is someone that still thinks Shackleton will come good. Why is he like this now? The old Wilder cut players loose in the early years or tried to when it wasn't working out. Lee Evans not quite what he wanted so moved him on. Same with Ryan Leonard.

This version of Wilder just seems to hang on to players needlessly hoping they hit some mega purple patch but instead they decrease in value to the point you can't even shift them out of the club.

Any offer above 3M and he should be gone for me. Wilder needs to accept that this signing is a failure. Every time he refers to Cannon he mentions "he has pace" and "he can stretch teams"...

1. His pace is ordinary. I don't know where it's come from that he's quick. He's not particularly quick at all.

2. Loads of strikers can "stretch teams". There's strikers in League 2 and below that can be a nuisance for defenders with their movement. It's standard. To be expected.

Fact is his footballing ability is not to this level and we see it game after game. Ryan Oné is raw and learning the game but we've seen that he's an handful. Who do you think Championship defenders would rather come up against, Cannon or him?

I've a lot of time for Cannon. Not remotely as a footballer, I just really enjoyed the stuff on Roy's View from other clubs which we jumped all over that he was really, really thick and didn't understand game plans, quite the most original and specific abuse I've ever read. I loved that and immediately warmed to the fella. Even more so when everyone decided approximately 27 seconds into his debut v Hull that he was absolute dog shit without remotely giving him a chance bless 'im.

All genuinely made me want him to do well but alas, he is indeed poop, so if we have a half decent offer which lets us cut our losses and let's t'owd Trigger go and stare blankly at someone else's tactics board, GLTTL

Leicester sold Tom Cannon to The Blades two years ago.


This would be a good move for Russell Martin, with a return to Leicester for the Republic of Ireland international. He has solid stats, scoring 2 goals in 3 games for his nation.


The Tom Cannon rumour came from an ITK account and could just be something to dream about, but such a move makes a lot of sense for both Leicester and Sheffield United. But it could also be a result of a potential package, giving Harry Souttar the chance to move in the opposite direction.
