Outgoing? Tom Cannon

I think he’ll come good. But I also thought we’d beat Sunderland and England would win the World Cup so I’m not often correct
Do you think he’s suddenly going to acquire intelligence, a footballing brain, positional sense, and speed of thought? Never mind the physical attributes to hold off a centre back or the pace to beat one in a foot race. Quite a lot going to be needed to get the lad up to speed for this season then. I wish him well in those endeavours.

interestingly, there are no quotes in the article so not sure where Danny gets the conclusion from. If it was from Wilder’s interview then I didn’t draw the same conclusion.

Surely admitting you got it wrong isn’t worth letting the club lose millions?

He has never looked the part and it is now 18 months that he’s been here.

What next? Let him get to one year to go and sell him at a vastly reduced fee anyway?

If Preston have some cash and we can get anywhere near the fee we paid we should snap their hands off and reboot.

Only thing I can think of is there is no point indicating you’d let the player leave unless you can be sure the bid is enough.

I could perhaps understand wanting to keep him if we were looking to play 4-3-3 or 3-4-1-2 but I just don’t see how he fits into the 4-2-3-1 that we’re currently using.

I think there’s a reasonably player in there but can’t see it happening under Wilder. We rarely counter at pace or play through balls for a striker running in behind.

He's neither quick enough, strong enough, nor intelligent enough to play that game. Nor is he good enough in the air or sharp enough to play the target role. Get rid.

I’m a big fan of Wilder, particularly when we are obviously cash-strapped. It’s entirely understandable that he wants to give Cannon every possible opportunity…. and he has scored goals elsewhere in the division.
Unfortunately like many, I just can’t see what he offers us… he has anonymous game after anonymous game. If he had obvious assets such as pace, strength or trickery then further patience might be warranted… but he doesn’t. It definitely feels right to give him a fresh start at another club and for us to look elsewhere.
I like the look of One… and if Donovan can provide supply from the right, he and Bamford could be a real handful.
Campbell getting back to somewhere near his best would be great but I’d like to see us add a real pace merchant up top.

90 mins v a very average division one side where we notched 3 and he did absolutely nothing...apart from sky a good chance. What is his USP? He isnt big, he isnt fast, he doesnt hold it up, he doesnt score. His time is up with us and it will do both the lib and Cannon a favour if he moves on
2nd half brought out a decent save from their keeper, I was looking at a highlights reel from his loan spell at Preston just before he joined us, the problem he doesn't get is the space and sometimes time he needs to put the ball past the keeper with the goals he scored for them and in some ways us, he has 3 or 4 yards of quick space, rather than being overloaded with defenders a lot of these are long balls over the top or just running at players backing off and getting a bit of luck. We play a different style and possibly not suited.

All well and good. But they all have a price and Chris knows this better than all of us.

That said, Preston will be shopping in the range £2m/£3m for this player and that just won’t cut it.

£5m might !

UTB.
I’d snap their hands off for £3mill and get him off the payroll. Upgrade One for a regular spot in the first team and use the money and invest it to bring in Adul Abdulmailk. Reminds me so much of Illie in so many ways.

This must be more of a "we aren't selling him cheap" message. I get it, we probably still owe money from his fee (didn't we borrow against parachute payments?) so whilst getting him moving on somewhere is probably best all round, we can't really afford to do it for pennies.

I actually think he will get goals this season. I just don't really know where or how, or why we play him!

You do not spend large amounts of money on a development project
Doyle, Imray at Wrexham
Brooks at Norwich
Other Brooks, Ramsdale at Bournemouth

All clubs that have spent large amounts of money on development projects. All have or will will make a profit on them

He was shit in that second loan spell and couldn't get in the Derby team by the end of the season. Bobbar.

Where did you dream up that nonsense?

He started 39 of his 40 eligible games for Derby, and came on as sub in the other.

The only 2 games he didn't appear in were against Southampton

The problem being Cannon was Wilders choice of a development project

I thought the way Wilder answered the question on Cannon suggested there is something in this story to Preston.

But might just be they've enquired. Can't see them wanting to pay more than a 4m for him. We've likely paid about 7m.
I agree. When asked about it there was a bit of a pause. Then he deflected away from it. He didn't deny it. But then again he also didn't confirm it either.
I'd be inclined to at least think there has been some kind of approach.

Great, it's not just about Wilder - it's also about the squad around him. He'll learn from players like Bamford et al

Signing a development project isn't a bad thing, and it isn't a bad thing under Wilder (as much as I think he does struggle to develop youth). Needs to be given time and a chance

How much time and how many chances does he need? Just sometimes, if you’ve played the game as an amateur in pretty good leagues over decades, you know. I can watch him, as do my contemporaries around me, and we can all point shout and get infuriated because we know instinctively where the run is, where the ball is likely to drop, where a cross will be delivered and where to meet it. He simply doesn’t get it. If after 10 years in the game, all he has is a hard shot and an ability (according to Wilder) to stretch the game WTF?) then he may as well pack it in professionally.

Except he has shown talent, very clearly. Stoke played to his strengths and he was scoring.

I'll point out to you that Sharp didn't do well here at first, neither did McBurnie or a variety of other players that have since gone on to progress incredibly well. There's very clearly a player in there, we just don't use him well

Get rid of this chancer he was only signed so nobody else would at the time .

100% and some!, I honestly don't see no quality in him that stands out, in fact I'm unsure how he made a professional footballer tbh .....

I’d say that’s on the harsh side, there were multiple spells today where there would be a passage of play where he’d made two or three different runs and the ball didn’t come.

The closest we came to actually looking for it was when he got himself into space towards the left hand side at the edge of their box first half, only the earlyish ball (for once) rather than being in front of him for a goalscoring opportunity, was put across his body and he had to come back and play to someone else, rather than taking advantage of the space in behind he’d “created”.
Yeh , let's face it - he's just too good for us.
Better get rid , it must be so frustrating for him to play at our level.

We are all intelligent enough to know that no matter what you're selling , the price is only what the market is prepared to pay.
No fucker in their right mind is going to pay £5m for a Cannon that won't fire.
There is literally ONE buyer in the market at Cannon's wages and it's our old friend Hecky , so he will dictate what the price is.
If the club misses this sale , it is nuts.

Rumour has it, we’ve turned down £4m.

Make of that what you will.

Can’t think that’s true. We’d be mad to do so.

Cannon is bobbar; we all knew within about 30 minutes of his debut it was a mistake. You’ll got to build a whole style of play around him for him to be effective, but the probably is he’s not particularly good anyway.

I’ve just had enough watching him. It’s painful stuff.

£5m should do it. Chuck a few add ons into the mix as well.

£5m in and his salary gone will be v useful. I'd love to see One given A PROPER RUN in the first 11.
For the strikers we could go with:

Bamford
One
Campbell
A premier league loan.
