Alright chief message received I’ll shut up.
Certainly not sour grapes though, go back and look what I said about Souttar when everyone was moaning about what a donkey he was on the rumour board. Or Campbell, indeed. Just offering my opinion.
Appreciate your opinion…..think a lot of Blades are facing the prospect that he might not be anything special and could be quite average.
We also accept we’ve probably overpaid….however when you think we recently sold Academy striker Will Osula to Newcastle for 10 million.
Then comparing records, it makes Cannon look cheap and a real bargain.
However not many people realise that we didn’t finish our Summer transfer busieness.
We lost about 15 players (was almost a total clear out), brought in £40 million in player sales.
So we approached Summer 24 with a huge transfer kitty needing to sign at least 15 new players, think we only brought in 12 players.
(the club were in advanced talks, expecting to get Mikey Johnsonston and Tom Cannon, but at the last minute they choose WBA and Stoke respectively).
Also instead of paying out big transfer fees, we changes out tactics and targeted the best free transfers, loans and players almost out of contract
And due to our finances we’re able to offer much higher wages compared to rival bids.
We started this season knowing our first 11 was (on paper) really good but we have big concerns about squad depth, we knew we couldn’t afford many injuries otherwise we’d struggle. Well those football gods spoke because in the last few weeks we must have had 10 players out injured. It’s been like a joke where we’re so short, we’ve had players forced to play out of position, struggled to fill the bench and ours subs have been untested academy players.
In recent matches we’ve only had 2 strikers (Ryan One from the Academy who has scored 1 goal in his time here and Rhian Brewster who has scored 2 goals in 2 years).
So let’s imagine that Cannon is only average Championship standard….then he’s better than what we’ve had recently and just by being injury free and available for selection, it makes him an asset.
