The key to this signing is how we use him.
Doesn't sound like he can play as a line-leading solo striker.
Will we actually play 2 strikers and change our shape ?
Or expect him to develop new attributes ?
For CW to know and us to discover.
Exciting times !

Campbell, Moore and Brewster all have fitness problems. BBD has barely played. It's a big chunk of change but hopefully stops us limping towards the playoffs with One up top.

CB and CM do need sorting pronto.
Agreed, but one can only sign who is available and for reasonable money. I'm sure we're trying to get the right bodies in for the middle of our defence and midfield, however, the new owners won't be ripped off or settle for second best. January is a seller's market. Charles is a prime example, not unreasonably his club want to maximise the loan wages they receive, so can wait until Feb 3rd then go for the highest bidder. But if Wilder and owners think it's bad financial business, that's fine with me. If we don't get promoted, bad economics now will hit us during the summer.

I resolutely believe he will not “get you up”. You may well go up with him, and he may even score a good number of goals. He’s a bit of a paradox because he’s just not a good enough player to make that kind of difference - he honestly doesn’t have any outstanding attributes. No pace, can’t head, unimposing, not tricky, can’t lead the line. Absolutely bang average. BUT he tends to score goals. He can make a bit of space and get a good shot off.

I guarantee that even if he scores a lot, your board will be split on whether he was a good signing because he adds very little else.
Thanks for the expectation management.
From what I’ve seen of him, I’m not expecting Roy of the Rovers, but if he does nothing more than “score a good number of goals’’, then that alone will help our promotion cause a very great deal.
Luckily, we’re not relying on him to do it all on his own - our existing players have got us to where we are, and we have some class acts already in house. Adding new options like Brereton Diaz alongside him can only help.
I think that Cannon will pull his weight for us during the remainder of this season. He’s also young, has caught the eye of our coaching squad, and has significant potential headroom. Even if he does nothing more than play his full part in a successful promotion push, he will prove to be good value for money.

He sounds like a 22 year old Billy Sharp!

Billy worked out the dark arts of forward play and learned how to apply then very effectively as well as being a prolific goalscorer.

Let's hope Cannon can do the same

Weirdo's who spend their time registering onto other team's forums then post numerous messages should always be treated with caution. However it is refreshing that there is someone from Stoke who can write in legible English, so well done you. You must be one of the posh ones.

Before the forum gets overtaken by the “we’ve spunked the transfer budget and not got any quality at the back or CM” Eeyore’s, perhaps we should wait util the end of the window?
I have a feeling that any players due in, are being held back by parent clubs. This creates an opportunity for the new owners to present them at the last minute, before the window closes. Big fanfare, and it makes the owners look good.

It may also indicate that COH are convinced we can use the loan of Gilchrist to cover a deficiency at CB. Given the injuries and poor squad depth, this could be risky for the club. If Wider is also thinking this way, he may have had his arm twisted? All speculation of course, but still a worry for the club.
Why else would we be linked with a right back?

Even investors have to balance the budget somehow! I think most supporters want a replacement for Souttar and Arblaster. Taking risks is part of the game, but it does worry me.

He's their focal point and Stokes only proper striker - the fact that he only has the goals he has highlights how poor he is

Factor in that I've watched him and he can't hold the ball, can't play people in and doesn't seem to be where he needs to be most the time - I'd steer way clear
If he is scoring for a crap team like Stoke, imagine what he might do with a decent supply line? He does have a habit of being in the right place to finish a move off, even at Stoke!
We do currently have a few players who can partner his finishing style, Moore, Caempbell, BBD and even Brewster at a push. Time to find out which one works best?

Wilder seems to be taking a leaf out of the Warnock Championship play book. Buy loads of stikers

Wilder said he likes to play off the shoulder of another striker, sounds like a role for Keifer Moore?

You’ve had three goes at gently telling us you don’t think he’s very good, I’m sure we’ve got the message. You may be right, but only saw him play in your team and from what I saw earlier in the season, Ronaldo and Messi combined would have struggled in that line up.

Billy Sharp and Keith Edwards didn’t have many of the attributes that you say Cannon lacks and they managed to score plenty, so I’ll take your sour grapes with a pinch of salt, so to speak 🙂

Alright chief message received I’ll shut up.

Certainly not sour grapes though, go back and look what I said about Souttar when everyone was moaning about what a donkey he was on the rumour board. Or Campbell, indeed. Just offering my opinion.

Appreciate your opinion…..think a lot of Blades are facing the prospect that he might not be anything special and could be quite average.
We also accept we’ve probably overpaid….however when you think we recently sold Academy striker Will Osula to Newcastle for 10 million.
Then comparing records, it makes Cannon look cheap and a real bargain.

However not many people realise that we didn’t finish our Summer transfer busieness.
We lost about 15 players (was almost a total clear out), brought in £40 million in player sales.

So we approached Summer 24 with a huge transfer kitty needing to sign at least 15 new players, think we only brought in 12 players.
(the club were in advanced talks, expecting to get Mikey Johnsonston and Tom Cannon, but at the last minute they choose WBA and Stoke respectively).
Also instead of paying out big transfer fees, we changes out tactics and targeted the best free transfers, loans and players almost out of contract
And due to our finances we’re able to offer much higher wages compared to rival bids.

We started this season knowing our first 11 was (on paper) really good but we have big concerns about squad depth, we knew we couldn’t afford many injuries otherwise we’d struggle. Well those football gods spoke because in the last few weeks we must have had 10 players out injured. It’s been like a joke where we’re so short, we’ve had players forced to play out of position, struggled to fill the bench and ours subs have been untested academy players.

In recent matches we’ve only had 2 strikers (Ryan One from the Academy who has scored 1 goal in his time here and Rhian Brewster who has scored 2 goals in 2 years).
So let’s imagine that Cannon is only average Championship standard….then he’s better than what we’ve had recently and just by being injury free and available for selection, it makes him an asset.

And compared to Whittaker, who Boro have offered £8m for and has scored 3 goals this season, then Cannon looks a good buy.

Being in the right place when chances drop is something for which certain players have a knack.
I would think it's extremely hard to coach.
Having the ability to shoot in the split second a chance opens up (something Moore hasn't mastered often in his long career) is probably also innate & virtually uncoachable.
Doing that with either foot doubles Cannon's chances of scoring.
(how often do you see a chance fall to one of our other players and you just know it's on his wrong foot + very little chance of a goal).

I think we've paid the fee to get the above attributes , which you could spend another striker's entire career failing to teach him.

OK , so Cannon might not be fast or strong , doesn't head it , doesn't hold it up or lay it off , or make great passes and I even read one comment saying he's too thick to be taught.

But he can be trained to get faster and go to the gym to get stronger

And if any manager can get the other skills into him , it's Wilder.

If he arrived with everything which folk say is missing , we would have paid much much more than £10m (if we've even paid that - officially it's undisclosed don't forget).

You're welcome any time mate ....don't be put off

Can't help but feel this is a bit of a panic buy and we've been royally ripped off. Not seen anything from him to suggest he is worth this kind of money.
jay stansfield cost 15m and playing in league 1 i think cannon is a good buy and will get plenty of goals for us and hes certainly not a panic buy wilder had him lined up in august until abdullah pulled the plug

I've seen plenty of both Stansfield and Cannon this season, and Stansfield is the superior player. Not writing Cannon off - but we have massively paid over the odds for him. He's an average/decent Championship player.

He's looked very poor tonight, another Brewster
